History
Established in 1948.
Elm Crest Retirement Community was built by the work and sacrifice of countless community members in 1948 to provide housing options for senior residents of Harlan, Iowa and the surrounding area of Shelby County.
Originally named the Baptist Memorial Home, and in 1972, the trustees voted to merge with the American Baptist Homes of the Midwest and changed its name to Elm Crest to reflect the diversity of residents served.
Elm Crest has grown from a handful of residents in nursing home care to more than 130 residents in Independent Living, Assisted Living, Nursing Home care and Alzheimer’s/Memory Care today.
