So, maybe going in December puts this place at a disadvantage. We actually had good time playing here. It’s just that this course is insane. Each hole has TWO greens, meaning that they can change the layout at will. I think they only do it once each season — they have a «Spring» course and a «winter» course. But it’s weird. You’ll be out there, and see two greens off in the distance and wonder which one you’re supposed to aim for. The signage doesn’t exist, and we had trouble finding the next tee. It’s not challenging in that it is not hilly, and even if you have a crummy slice like me, you’ll be in good shape because there’s no underbrush. The greens were like the top of a pool table; painted green and all one big hill. It’s a quiet course — I’ll give it that. Kind of a depressing area. You’re in the middle of nowhere — these new homes around — fracking going on under your feet. Yes, they do that underground fracking in this area. Creeps me out. Two stars is a little harsh. It’s a cheap course so you get what you pay for. We had fun. But I wouldn’t recommend this place. If I was asked to go back I’d go, but not before suggesting somewhere else.

This is the second time I have played at Willow Springs. The first time was 2 or 3 years ago, but i enjoyed it back then and knew I would play it again. The course is the same. It’s a fairy easy layout that is great for the novice golfer. The course was in pretty good shape for November 28th. We had a 1:28 tee time and showed up about 1:10. The guy at the register told us that it was thinning out and we would be good to go as soon as 2 golf cars became available. They apparently were having charging issues. We waited about 30 minutes for the 2nd car to come available. We teed off about 10 – 15 minutes past our scheduled tee time. No worries, we should have had plenty of time to finish. Wrong! Pace of play was brutal and I don’t blame WS for that. It appeared that there were many 1st timers and for a holiday weekend that can be expected. What really, really bothered me was that we received message on the golf car GPS that stated the course was closing in 30 minutes. There was still 60 to 75 minutes of daylight remaining. I saw the Marhall and asked him why they were closing early and he said they weren’t. They just wanted all the golf cars back in the barn by dark so everyone could go home at a descent hour. I told him that all courses close at dark. He said we could probably squeeze another hole in if we wanted. Our 14th hole!!! Buyer beware, this is a straight forward, basic golf course. It’s reasonably priced and is in pretty good shape. Just realize that you need to shave off 30 – 45 minutes for that twilight tee time if you plan on finishing before that staff wants to go home.

It was a really nice course but the marshall kept following us around giving us a hard time and telling us that we needed to speed it up and when we explained to him that it was my first time on a course, he rudely told us that you teach on the driving range. We went at 6pm on a HOT Wednesday night so it’s not like there was a line if people behind us, and if anyone caught up to us we let them go ahead of us. He again later rudely told us that we weren’t allowed to drive the cart on any par 3 holes and that it was like that everywhere, talking down to us like we were idiots. The 3 of us are from Illinois and the other 2 of us(besides myself) regular golfers and had never heard of that rule. He continued to check up on us consistently through the 9 holes that we played just looking for something to give us a hard time about. It was a nice course close to our new home, but I have never been treated so rudely.

Disclosure: I worked here for two years in high school. Willow Springs is one of those courses that you need to know what you are in for, when you go. If you think this if three stars, compared to Texas Star or Iron Horse or something, you are in for a shock. If you think it is 3 stars compared to most muni courses in Tarrant Co., you will be pleased. The owner Dacus Lindsay has spent alot of money the past 10 years upgrading the course. In that time it has been transformed from a course that is primarily dead grass and cow patties, into a very playable muni-style course. Willow Springs is an easy, flat course, with a handful of water holes, and a friendly rural Texas attitude. When I worked here I twice had to kick cows off the 6th tee box. That was fun. The suburbs of North Fort Worth are quickly encompassing haslet. The growth really began when Texas Motor Speedway was built. From the aforementioned 6th tee box, you can see the speedway, and hear a race if it is going on. The driving range has real grass driving surfaces. It is cheap to play here. On Fridays they have a 4-person best-ball scramble.
