Tempest Freerunning Academy South Bay

This is definitely a unique gym! Love the video game theme with the artwork and set up. There are so many talented people training here.
This is the first parkour gym I’ve been to so I dunno how it compares to other parkour gyms. I just did a drop in class for fun while in LA and came out alive and learning how to shoulder roll and some vaults. Will update this when i check out other gyms.

This place is amazing for both young and old. Great place for kids to learn and build confidence. What a great experience! Looking forward to coming there again soon!

We celebrated our son’s 9^th birthday here last weekend and it was an overall success! We had a big group of kids (30+) and the experience, once we were inside the gym, was great. Getting from the street to the facility was a little tricky, but the most challenging part was moving past the lobby into the gym. The woman receiving the parents/​kids was rude and unprofessional to several of our guests. She did not speak nicely to the people filling out the waivers for the kids, nor did she have the wherewithal to multitask and have several ipads going at the same time to ease the flow of the task at hand — quickly getting all the kids to the party! Once that cluster up front was complete, the rest of the time was wonderful. The coaches took the kids through a two hour fun-​fest of activities and the adults were able to watch all the action from the balcony. We appreciated being able to hang out in the air conditioned area lounge where we ate and drank up our own food, beverages and cake and lastly enjoyed hearing the kids thank us for the «epic fun»!

Cool facility. Staff working inside the gym are great but the front desk check in staff obviously don’t work out there to relieve stress. We checked in with several kids and had a horrible experience. After waiting in line 20 minutes (with 7 other people) no one acknowledged we were standing around waiting to check in. A friendly «we will be right with you would have done wonders». Only 1 person was working the front desk while a crowd of people hovered around the desk. Eventually I grabbed a mini IPAD and starting signing in. There were no signs posted about how to check in, no one around to answer questions. It was a mess. I only figured it out because I watched other people. After trying to sign in on the mini IPAD I had to stop and wait for help the because the IPAD was frozen. I am not an Apple person so signing in on a mini IPAD with no one to help and 4 kids hovering around me was not fun. HELP! The ONE lady working the desk was too busy arguing with another woman to help anyone else. She was unprofessional and not the kind of first impression person you want as the first person a customer encounters when they come in your new business. I was embarrassed for her just listening to the way she was talking to other customers. By the time she got to me I was ready to leave. UGH. STAY AWAY!!! It’s really too bad because once inside we had a blast .

This is a well put together gym, a lot of soft surfaces and corners (especially compared to concrete).
For all those complaining about the cost, consider how much more pleasant it is not having double, triple or quadruple the amount of people there just by saving 20−30% of the admission… the same people complaining about the price now would give even a worse rating if cheaper and more crowded (and way less safe, if ya think about it…)
Introductory classes are not supposed to be comprehensive, but usually in any sport are designed to let you learn how much you will love the sport… or not. All good.

Came here for a group birthday party and they had the whole place reserved for three hours. I work out regularly but don’t consider myself particularly flexible or nimble, so I wasn’t sure what to expect. However, it turned out to be super fun. They broke us out into groups and each group learned different techniques, and then rotated. Learned how to hop over obstacles in a variety of ways, scale walls, climb various bars. Most of the stuff was surprisngly easy (required strength more than flexibility), but I’m sure they kept to the very basics. Too bad they didn’t teach us anything on the trampolines or the crazy ramps. After the lesson it was open gym until you got tired. The instructors are some younger dudes who are pretty friendly.
The facility is a little hard to find off the street but there is lots of parking around the building. Not sure how much it costs since it was paid for, and not sure how crowded it gets when it’s open to the public, so disregarding those two important factors, on a fun scale alone it was 5 stars. Super fun! They had a Minecraft themed area for kids and looks like they have some other stuff like rings and weights and kettle bells for more traditional gym workouts.
Only complaint is that they need to turn up the AC!

Pros: The gym is great for those interested in getting better at parkour and free running.
The coaches are knowledgeable.
My son loves the place.
Cons: It’s expensive as far as gyms and classes go. $ 100 per month for classes, $ 50 sign up fee and then $ 15 every open gym (adults) $ 20 (kids)
They change the rules and/​or maybe the staff doesn’t know them very well. So if one person tells you one thing it may not be the case. And sometimes they will tell you one thing and change it next time around. They should be more consistent.
Can get extremely hot inside.

Be sure to check hours of free play before you go in.

Hardcore Parkour! As Jim on Season 6 of «The Office» explains, parkour is «[the] internet sensation of 2004. And, it was in one of the Bond films. It’s pretty impressive. The goal is to get from point A to point B as creatively as possible.» If you’re a beginner like me, then you probably won’t be that creative or graceful. But we’re all allowed to have delusions of grandeur once and awhile!
My general impression of freerunning/​parkour is that this is not an activity for those who do not have a modicum of arm, leg, or core strength. This was a good workout, and I’m thankful that I had the foresight to take albuterol beforehand. Most of the people in our class (aerialists, cross-​fitters, spartan runners, and casual exercisers) seemed to have been relatively fit, so I would assume that freerunning is a self-​selective activity. Regardless, be prepared to leave with some soreness!
Although it made me realize that I’m not cut out to be on American Ninja Warrior, the beginner adult class was well-​structured, and our friendly, helpful coach taught us basic maneuvers that would come in handy once we progressed to higher levels. Skills that were covered in the beginner class included: vaulting, basic bar flips, tumbling, wall climbing and cat hanging. The class moved rather quickly, as we were thrust into the activities after short explanations and demonstrations. I probably won’t remember everything I learned during class, as we packed so much into a short amount of time. As adults, it can be tough to harness the fearlessness that most children possess, but while it’s difficult for me to imagine myself actually using these skills outside (e.g. on concrete), I felt mostly comfortable doing these exercises in the whimsical, well-​equipped space. To progress to more advanced classes, you need to acquire colored bands, which indicate your successful mastery of certain basic techniques. As others have mentioned, the coaches weren’t too big on stretching beforehand, but if you’re in the habit of exercising, that should be a no brainer before any physical activity. We were given frequent water breaks and did have the chance to rest a little between each activity.
The children’s class seemed to be doing similar activities, but scaled to their height /​ability (e.g. instead of jumping to the ground, kids would instead jump unto mats or elevated platforms.) There was a viewing area on the second floor for parents to monitor their kids, though many seemed disinterested and bored. If I were one of those parents, I’d totally be jealous of my kid (s), as I’d want to play at Tempest since the space has walls painted like pixelated video game scenes from the original Nintendo as well as walls designed like castles with crenelations and battlements.
If you’d like to sign-​up for a class, make sure to fill out the liability waiver online. Then, make a reservation for the appropriate class via telephone or online. If you’re new to Tempest, the first class is FREE! If you’re dropping in for one class, you’ll be charged $ 30. If you sign-​up for a longer period of time /​classes, the rate will be cheaper. Open gym hours are Monday through Thursday from 8−11PM and cost $ 15. It’s also cheaper if you sign-​up for monthly access to open gym hours.
The location can be somewhat hard to find amidst the Space X and Tesla warehouses. If you see the Tesla warehouse, then you’re generally in the right vicinity. There is dedicated parking onsite for Tempest, so no need to park far away or worry about permits.
So, even if you aren’t destined to conquer Mount Midoriyama (which by the way is redundant given the fact that «yama» means mountain) but still want to emulate Michael Scott and Andy Bernard’s hardcore parkour skills, you should definitely check out Tempest Freerunning Academy for a unique and fun experience!

If I could give it negative stars, I would. It took me a long time to write this review because I wanted to pass my wedding weekend before letting loose on this place. I also was reminded to write this when they sent me an advertising email. Ya, that kinda of pissed me off.
So basically, I went for a beginner class. My first parkours class which I had always wanted to try. The class is expensive and so you would think the trainers are well trained and professional. They seem very nice, they seem very good at parkours, but they are not very good at being a trainer. Athletes don’t always make good coaches and vice versa. For a beginner class, they need to (but don’t) go through some lengthy stretching exercises prior to beginning the course. I don’t even think the trainer told us to stretch… if he did, it was in an off-​hand way before class started and everyone was there. I mean, generally people who try this are in shape but this is more intense and varied than your average class so you definitely need to stretch… a lot. Well, at the end of the class, on my last run up the wall, my achilles tendon ruptured. Everyone heard the snap. I went down in pain and had visions of my wedding walk being ruined by a cast or crutches. My BFF who is a personal trainer to celebrities asked about the stretching done before… when I told her this, she was ready to rip these guys a new one. At the end of the day, caveat emptor. GO HERE AT YOUR OWN RISK (as you will see on their liability waiver as well).

Great facility. If you’re looking to learn parkour and freerunning, that is exactly what this place is for! This place is huge and has so many obstacles to offer. The coaches are good at what they do and the staff is very friendly and helpful.
The prices are a little bit higher than their Chatsworth location, but the gym is bigger and they have more equipment to offer. All their information can be found online on their website, including rules and regulations, or you can call the facility when they’re open.
Before participating, everyone needs to have an online waiver filled out. For anyone under 17, make sure your parents or legal guardian has filled one out for you. This is also located on their website conveniently if anyone happens to forget and drops in without mom or dad around!

In spite of calling ahead to find out all the rules and regulations, I arrived after a somewhat long drive only to find out that I hadn’t been told all the qualifications and one boy could get in and one boy could not. Needless to say, they wouldn’t be flexible or find a working solution so we had to leave with 2 very disappointed kids. I was willing to sign up for classes but no longer. They didn’t only loose $ 60.00 for today but they probably lost years worth of future revenue from a boy who is a fantastic freerunner/​parkour lover.

I am only giving it 2 stars not based on the facility or staff but because their prices have «SKY ROCKETED» to far to make it affordable. I loved going here but for ONE HOUR long class is $ 30 for drop in!!!
That is not reasonable and it seems pretty clear that they aren’t here to inspire and help people train to grow as individuals but more so they just want to grow their wallets.
The most affordable thing you can attend it the open gym (unmonitored) for $ 15 and that’s it. It really is heart breaking to think that this still new company doesn’t want to help all people from different incomes.
Your better off going to LA School of Gymnastics for their Thursday Nights Parkour Class that is still $ 15 for 1.5 hours.

So believe it or not my son AND I have found a home at Tempest South Bay. I am a 44 year old working mom who was somewhere between a 4 and 5 on a 1 to 10 fitness scale.
NOW? Well, after a couple of months at Tempest just running around, playing on kid like stuff and occasionally being coached by a Team Tempest member and some of the best coaches I have ever worked with… I am on my way to a 7 on that fitness scale!
BTW-​my kid thought their summer camp was THE BEST EVER! More than just the FreeRunning but the games and «other time» was all about movement and safe fun.
To top it off: Recently, my son, at the end of his class, hurt himself. The staff, coaches and even the founder of Tempest himself were there to help him off the floor and getting ice onto the injury. They had their trainer there to make sure he was alright.
Hey, this is Parkour and FreeRunning people, injuries do happen. That is precisely why we train at the gym, to limit those chances. The best is knowing that if and when the hurt happens, Tempest Academy has your back… like I said, it feels like home… with less yelling ;) and better music to work out with!

Probably the funnest place on earth.
Get some excersice while playing your ass off like a little kid.
Adults and children play here on the same equipment with some separation between the very big and very small. I assume if you are a really short adult or adult dwarf they will put you with the adults, but I did see a super tall kid in the adult class. This kid was taller than everyone. Anyway, you get the idea, swing on bars, roll on the padded floor, or jump into the foam pit whoever you are.
If you bring your kids here and just watch them play, you are missing out big time. I would even say you are setting a bad example for the kids.

Less crowded than the gym in Chatsworth. Amazing gym for trampwall, great foam pit and gymnastics floor. Those of you familiar with the Chatsworth location will dig this one since it’s bigger, less crowded and has TONS of great stuff to play on. Way to go Tempest!
Con: adult open gym is $ 15– please bring back Women Wednesdays for only $ 5 :)
