Investigate one of the treasures of Missouri wine country at Adam Puchta Winery — located approximately one hour from St. Louis, on the west end of the Hermann Wine Trail. We are the oldest continuously owned family winery in the country, founded in 1855 by Adam Puchta. Located along the banks of Frene Creek, just two miles southwest of historical Hermann, Missouri, today a visit to the winery, you will discover the Puchta legacy while sampling a variety of wines.

Come experience our Hermann winery — taste award-​winning wines, browse historical buildings and cellar or join us for one of the many events held throughout the year. Open seven days a week, offering daily wine tastings. Sorry we are closed New Year’s Day, Easter, Thanksgiving and Christmas day.

You are welcome to pack a picnic and stay a while. We have plenty of shaded picnic tables and limited covered seating. Enjoy a glass or two of wine while enjoying the peaceful country setting.

History

Established in 1989.

The story of the winery actually begins on May 25, 1839, when Adam Puchta, a lad of seven, along with his older brother Friedrich, his father John Henry Puchta, his step-​mother, and three stepsisters ranging in age from five months to five years left the port of Hamburg, Germany for the United States. The family actually emigrated from Oberkotzau, a village in the northeastern corner of Bavaria near the Czech border, where Adam’s father was a butcher.

Upon the family’s arrival in Hermann they settled on a 40-​acre tract of land north and adjacent to the land on which the winery is located. Adam’s father built a one-​room log cabin, approximately 16′ x 20′ for his family of seven, and a small wine cellar with a press house over it. He purchased the land in 1841 and in 1849 purchased 40 more acres, which is now part of the winery farm.

I am the owners assistant. Besides assisting him in many aspects of the company, I also manage all the social media, newsletters, advertising, etc for the winery. I’ve been with the winery for almost 2 years, am a part time employee and enjoy working at my favorite winery in the Hermann area.

This is my favorite winery in Hermann. They seem to be the only one that still serves tastings in actual wine glasses. You get 8 tastings for $ 5, which is a great deal! I also love that they have many cracker pairings to go with the wines. They have a lot of sweet wines, which I really like. Jazzberry is my favorite! If you like cats, they have friendly strays that hang around the property. They also have a real nice gift shop with lots of cute handmade items. I was there for the third time this Saturday and although they were overstaffed, our group was treated wonderfully and we were not rushed.

This has now become my favorite winery in Hermann. We always make sure to stop by Adam Puchta first anytime we do a wine tasting in Hermann, MO so as to enjoy the great flavors that they have! Each tasting is 8 wines for $ 5, which is incredibly reasonable as they give you decent pours.
There are a few things that really set Adam Puchta apart. First, they have quite the variety of wines, ranging from dry to sweet. Second, they are one of the few places in Hermann that is still doing tastings in glassware, which I LOVE. Third, their service was excellent. It appeared that they were short-​staffed when we arrived on Saturday, yet I never felt ignored nor did I ever have to wait for a tasting. Even with all of the craziness, our wine guide still managed to describe the flavors of each wine we tasted, as well as provided crackers along with our tastings. I was really impressed that he was able to service so many people so seamlessly! Finally, i think they truly do have the best tasting wines in all of Hermann. They have some really jammy/​fruity wines, such as Jazzberry. I also thought their reserve Norton and high-​end ports were amazing. Be sure to try both tastings if you are able to! Definitely worth it.
As a side note, they seem really concerned with the welfare of cats around Hermann, and even have several roaming the premises. Furthermore, they have two bottles that benefit breast cancer organizations. Not only do they make great wine, but I appreciate their philanthropy!
Finally, I think they have a store with a lot of wine memorabilia and a café, although I didn’t end up ordering anything to eat. I was too hooked on their delicious cookies that they pair with the wines :). In sum, a great place for wine tasting in Hermann. You should definitely check them out!

I come here for the cats. And the wine. Ok more so the cats. Most people visiting Herman MO find themselves at The hermannhof or Stone hill. Well fellow Unilocalers do I have a treat for you. Just moments away nestled in the back country is this divine little winery.
Adam Puchta is family owned & operated making it rise to the top of my list. I’m a sucker for community & believe everyone else should strive to support their own. It is the oldest family owned winery in the area, or so the sign says, dating back to 1855.
Many different tastings are available so I suggest checking out the website for more in depth information as I’m not getting paid for this. Worth mentioning is that they do charge for their tasting because people, you’re not paying for wine, you’re paying for an experience. Ok, so I stole that from online, sue me! The staff I’ve encountered while here are friendly and knowledgeable on all accounts. Id tell you about the wine I tried but that’s the fun in going yourself!
The wine trolley makes this a stop on their drive so keep that in mind when visiting Herman.
All their seating is outdoors & they do not have a restaurant. Don’t let that deter you though because the grounds are beautiful (not a view like stone hill but still) & you’re more than welcome to bring a picnic! And your dog. They’re pet friendly. Live music plus animals… And I suppose wine… what a day.

Visited Adam Puchta for the second time this weekend and we were not disappointed. We are frequent buyers or their Vignoles and Misty Valley but after this weekend we are sold on there port and mead. Loved the staff, wine and friendly vineyard cats.

This was one of my favorite stops on the trail as they gave us a Puchta-​rita as our drink to enjoy with their smoked carnitas. A puchta-​rita is their vignoles mixed with margarita mix and chilled and it surely hit the spot on that hot Missouri day.
The seating area was under a tent, down a hill there and a bit confusing. Under the tent was hot, the fan wasn’t doing any good, they could have used another one with amount of people coming and going.
We were not offered any other tastings, nor told where to go if we wanted other tastings. The lady who did serve us though was extremely nice and got us what we needed at her area.
There are cats roaming the area so just a heads up on that.
Do check out the store, you can find lots of items you may want to take home.

David is a great wine host. He really knows his wines. I learned so much from him in 30 minutes. The things I really enjoyed about this place is you can have a wine fundamental 101, learn the history of the Puchta and you’re not elbow to elbow to other winers. My favorite wine is their Norton, it’s more bold, full-​bodied and I fell instantly in love when I first poured it in a glass because first, it doesn’t have the alcohol odor but the smell of different scents in one glass and second, it pairs well with lambchops.

$ 5 for at least 8 tastings-​generous pours and little cookies or crackers with each wine to see what they pair with. Our guy was knowledgeable and very friendly. I told him I like sweet and semi-​sweet, and my husband likes dry and semi-​sweet, and he guided us to the picks he thought each of us would like the best, and finished it with some mead for both of us. Loved it! And they currently have 16 cats that live on the property. So cute! Only downside for me was there were only porta-​potties for restrooms. Thank God I didn’t need one!

We arrived at this winery on a blustery January morning. That said, we were treated like kings and queens. Not only were we given a fantastic one on one tasting, we were told a bit of the history of the family and the winery (oldest family owned winery in in the US). We asked questions and were met with intelligent and interesting answers– from the different varietals of grapes they grew (the original Germanic grapes went extinct during prohibition) to the history of the tasting building itself (built in 1850s there is no running water or plumbing in the building). The wines were decent as far as Missouri wines go and they kindly offered different pairings with some of the food they sold as well. A very nice trip. I’m glad we stopped by.

I have spent a little time in tasting rooms over the last several years and I know my way around pretty well. Unfortunately, Adam Puchta Winery was not representing the Missouri wine scene as well as I expected. My husband and I visited Hermann MO for the first time this weekend and I was the most excited about this winery because I had heard the wines were «award-​winning». Walking into the tasting room I was very underwhelmed by the bucolic appearance reminiscent of a small barn. We were greeted by very friendly people working at the bar in the tasting room. We tasted eight wines for $ 5 and compared to most wineries I have visited in California this is inexpensive. However, given the quality of the wines I tasted here it was not a good value. The wines, for me, were unappealing. Among the 8, I tasted a Vidal Blanc, a Situation Red, a «Save a Rack» Red and «Save a Rack» White (both representing Breast Cancer Research). I didn’t feel compelled to buy a bottle of anything we tasted because the wines were just not drinkable. The girl working in the tasting room was very nice and friendly but not very knowledgeable. I think this winery is fine for people who haven’t been to more sophisticated tasting rooms and tasted world class wines. For a local hangout to just sit outside and drink wines that are marginal I would imagine there is a segment of the population that enjoys this setting. I like the family history of this winery and wish them well with their winery but they need to make some tweaks to bring it up to the standards of what most consumers would expect from a winery and a tasting room experience.
In the Hermann area there are several other wineries that do a better job of representing the history of Missouri wine and do a better job making good quality wine.

We have been to wineries across the country… but unfortunately when we visited this winery we were treated like we couldn’t afford their wine.
My husband and I enjoyed the general tasting room, but then when we proceeded to their other tasting room to try their estate norton the gentleman greeted us saying «This is the high rent district.» «The wines in this room start at $ 25+.» He then proceeded to say «I am going to fill up my water real quick and I will be right back,» My husband were shocked at the way he treated us acting as if we couldn’t afford a $ 5 tasting or a $ 25 bottle of wine. We left immediately and later spoke with the manager about the attitude and he seemed to have no problem with this type of customer service. We will not be going back and do not recommend this winer to family or friends.

The Traveling Winers on Missouri Wine Trail
Make sure to come hungry to this wine tasting experience! Adam Puchta Winery is the oldest family owned winery (6 generations!) in the U.S. and has used their time in the industry to come up with a very unique tasting experience. With almost each wine you taste they offer a small taste of a complimentary food item — cheese crackers, cheese straws, chocolates, etc. Boy, does it bring out the flavor of both the wine and the food item! They produce about 25,000 cases per year, growing Norton and Vignoles varietals on site. Make sure to say «hi» to the winery fur creatures as they are just as much a part of the business as the staff. We had a good time here. The wine tasting was down the hill in the cellar. The cost was $ 5 for 8 tastings or $ 10 for 16 tastings. We did the 8 since we were tasting at so many places. We needed to pace ourselves. Haha! Wine was served in pretty glasses & some was served with a bite of food that complimented the wine.
Staff was very friendly. We bought a couple bottles & went out back to the tables in the yard. Cats wander throughout the premises looking for attention. Very sweet.

Will I go back? Yes. This was the first of many wineries that we visited when recently in Hermann. There is a $ 5.00 fee for the tasting but I found this to be reasonable. We were able to taste 6 wines for this fee. We were served in a glass wine glass and provided appropriate food pairings to complement the wine flavors. Some have complained that the food pairings are snack type foods. While this is true the point is being missed. The idea is to get the flavor combinations not to feature a specific food.
While there take a close look at the buildings. These are the original home and barns of the founder and still in use today. This makes for an interesting historical view and a good topic of conversation with the staff.

My wife and I on our 5th anniversary came to Hermann for a BnB and of course the wine tour.
This place was our first stop on our Tour de Hermann and it was our favorite! The winery received my highest score of the day of 8⁄10! We brought back a bottle of one of their dry reds, exclusive to the location. The location was quaint and scenic and he staff was knowledgable and had little «pairings» suggested with most wines, which was exclusive to this winery. Best wines I. Hermann and 7 generations deep in that location. Do not miss!

It’s a winery with kitties!!! That’s the headline for the review of a winery I briefly visited last summer. There are cats everywhere outside. Inside, that’s not the case. The staff explained that cats roam onto the property or get dumped. The owner makes sure they’re altered and they get to stay on the property for life. There are many sources of food and water as well as adequate cat shelters. This has me won over.
It was $ 5 to taste wines at Adam Puchta. They had quite a few wines, but the only one that struck me was Cat’s Meow.
Yes, they named a wine after the kitties! Cat’s Meow is, I think, the only wine I have ever purchased for the bottle. It was drinkable, but not sweet like I like. I gave one bottle of Cat’s Meow (hot pink label, big white fluffy cat) to a friend who liked it very much, and I still have my bottle (red label, black cat).
I like wine, but I love kitties. Seeing how happy the cats are at Adam Puchta inspired me to start spaying/​neutering feral cats in my community. If you see a feral cat, please remember that it didn’t choose that sort of a life, and consider contacting a local feral cat coalition to find a suitable way for it to live its life. This was the most disappointing winery in Hermann for me. They charge $ 5 tastings, which isn’t bad, but they serve them in plastic clear dixie cups and don’t even let you try some of the better wines, like Norton. Correction, after this tasting, they did tell us that we could try another tasting in another room where we could try the Norton, but that tasting was an additional $ 5 a person (which we didn’t do).
They claimed they had «food pairings,» which they kind of did, but the food was dried cheese straws and such. Maybe my taste buds are off, but they said that one wine tastes like a margarita if paired with a lime cookie (which they did) but I tasted bad white wine and artificial lime flavoring. They also claim they have a Chardonnay, but unless the wine maker at Stone Hill was mistaken, Chardonnay grapes can’t grow in the Missouri climate (which is why you see Chardonnels). The tasting room and picnic area had a rustic feel to it which was pretty cool, except that the bathrooms were a line of Port-​O-​Potties.
Pros: less crowded than some other wineries
Cons: sub par wine, wine tasting experience isn’t very good, port-​o-​potties

My grandparents have a farm in Hermann, so I sometimes feel like I am a bit of an expert. I have now made it to every winery in Hermann, so I feel like I can honestly say Adam Puchta is my favorite.
When you approach this winery, you drive up a gravel road and get a full view of the tasting rooms, which look like old barns. You are promptly greeted by adorable cats which live on the property. After chatting with the staff, I learned that the owner of Puchta is a huge animal lover! When cats show up on his property, he spays them and they just live in on the winery. He also built him these cute little cat shelters they can go in at night. What a life! This place earned it’s five stars not only for wine, but social responsibility. I love it. The winery also allows dogs on leashes, so we brought our chihuahua, Julian. Although he was scared of the cats, I think he enjoyed all of the grass, trees, and new smells.
Puchta only charges $ 5.00 for tasting fees, but you are able to taste a bunch of wines. They also pair them with these dessert crackers. One wine pairs with a key lime cookie, making it taste like a margarita! Yum! My husband and I have very different wine tastes. He likes his so sweet it is basically hummingbird food, and I prefer more dry. We met in the middle with Adam’s Choice, and I bought myself some little cheddar crackers. After we bought our wine, we sat out at a picnic table and enjoyed some live music.
I think this place is great for a group. After trying so many wines, we couldn’t finish the bottle we bought. I recommend pacing yourself, as the tasting portions are generous (never a problem in my book.)

This would be 3 stars, but the wines I tasted were really great! That is why I go to wineries after all! We were among the first to sample their new «Cat’s Meow» red, and it was fruity and complex with just the right amount of sweetness.
Three stars because though it is a charming little location, it is missing those little «extra nice» touches that would make it more of a destination winery. It’s also a bit awkard to spend time in the tasting room and then have to shuffle off to a separate store area to actually buy a bottle or two, it felt very disjointed. However, the staff was nice.
There are cats wandering around. That can be a plus or a minus depending on how much you like cats, I think I spotted at least three.
