Hermosa Beach Community Center – Community Resources Department

GREAT BEACH… Near bars and shopping stores… They have monthly shows lots of ppl around and everyone is really cool…

Artz Unlimited School, in Hermosa Beach, is the greatest class ever. The children’s work is amazing, they duplicate photos and masterpieces. I have personally met former, current and returning adult students and read some of their class evaluations. here are just a couple of quotes «this class is fabulous, I learned so much.» «the instructor is amazing-​so patient»
«The class was small, very hands on, was able to learn alot»
«Marlin Evans is a very attentive, and organized teacher» «it’s an overall enjoyable class»
The only negative feedback I have personally heard or read, was about how finding a decent parking spot can be a bit challenging, and also, the one negative review, from his ex girlfriend, who obviously lacks any sort of integrity or scruples, for using this site as some sort of personal vendetta, rather than an honest consumer review. There are no existing witnesses, to her false claims about being disrespected in class, and no existing complaints on file, in the office of the community center, against Marlin, because the negative experience, only exists in her head.
Please fell free to drop by the community center, check out the class, see the students work, posted on the walls, talk to the parents, adult students. See for yourself, what a wonderful class this is. The students works of art, and their appreciation of Mr, Marlin, is a true testament, to what a fine instructor he is, and what a great class, he is teaching. You will not find a better art class, than this one

Lovely city! The beach is great (and clean!!) and I love the pier. It has that «perpetual vacation» feel to everything. Stuff in the shops & restaurants is a bit pricey, but what’s that old saying? «A tourist and his money are soon parted»? Yeah.

Review # 700!!!
Being that I am a the municipal recreation field I thought I would write my 700^th review on the The City of Hermosa Beach’s community center. I work in a Community Center all day every day as well and I can tell you they are doing a good job maintaining the facility here. I came in to participate with my nephew in his «music together» class and had a great time. The instructor was energetic and engaging creating an fun environment for the both parents and kids. My nephew had such a great time.
The facility it self was clean and inviting. There was plenty of signage so that you can find the room that you’re looking for and I like the fact that there are lots of large windows that allow natural lighting into each room. Although I did not have any interaction with the staff, I did observe one of their building attendants checking in on the class to see if they needed anything.

This community center is one of the best in Los Angeles!
Recently, I attended the the Children’s Basics in Art Class, Art Show (the last class of the 10-​week session.) These 4 – 12 year olds are duplicating masterpieces! It blew me away. In addition, students are able to add from their imagination and develop a style all their own. Being a designer myself, it was refreshing to see that the true fundamentals of art are still cherished and passed on to our next generation. With art instruction slowly disappearing from our schools, I think it is imperative to supplement our children’s curriculum with the enrichment of art. The kids program… I’d give it a 5… as it inspired me to pick up a paint brush.

However, after attending the oil painting basics class for adults, for over a year, I’ve had a different experience than the children. On a regular basis, I was accused of being «disrespectful» if I did not grasp concepts. I was belittled in front of other students, accused of being «hard-​headed» and «not listening»…and although I was proud of my progress, and my ability to think beyond out-​dated techniques, I was chastised during, and after class, for my free-​thinking, and willingness to learn through dialogue. I thought I was in a recreational art class, but in fact, it is a one-​way lecture. It’s only the teacher’s way, or the highway. I pushed as hard as I could so that I could accomplish my goals as an artist. But I got the impression that no person is allowed to become any better than this instructor, as long as you are enrolled in his class… expansion of your skillset beyond his, is considered «disrespectful.»
I hope the children continue to learn and grow, but it is in my opinion, that the Artz Unlimited instructor should not be teaching adults that have the ability to think for themselves… as his program is based off a 15-​year old Mission Renaissance curriculum, and not well adapted in this environment.
In the mean time, I hear Redondo has a better program, and I’ve watched MANY of the adult students from Hermosa, (all but 1 to be exact) suddenly leave, and a few recommend the Redondo program over this one… I too, am going to check them out.
It’s a shame… because this community center rocks! The location is perfect, the staff is friendly, and the facilities are neat and tidy.
I hope a new instructor comes to Hermosa, so I can began accomplishing my artistic goals, and still enjoy a great studio environment.

Hermosa Beach Community center is home to several types of classes over the years. This facility is located right on the corner of P.C.H. and Pier Ave, and serves as sort of an ambassador to the city.
You don’t have to be a local to come on in, and take any number of classes. These classes are reasonably priced, and taught by professionals in their fields.
One of the newest classes hosted by the community center is the ARTZ Unlimited School program. This program consist of a children s program in which they are taught to draw everything from landscapes to animals in pastel, watercolor, and even oil.
There is also an adult program for oil painting, or watercolor. these classes offer individualized attention, small class sizes, and All Skill Levels. You can learn the actual techniques of art’s greatest, in a fun, non pressured environment… plus you’re near some of Hermosa’s best restaurants, shops, and even a gallery.
