First time customer to Brush Strokes. Krystal did an amazing job coloring my hair. I hadn’t had my hair dyed since a few weeks before my daughter was born– she is now 6 months. Krystal matched the hair color perfectly and the experience was fantastic. Scheduled my next appointment and definitely going to return and recommend this place to family and friends.

Love Melodie. I have fine hair — plenty of it but still fine. Melodie has been awesome working with me after a medical incident where my hair was very thin, I tavel a lot for my work overseas for somettimes several weeks. I try to muddle through the hair thing till I can get home. And she is reasonably priced. Highly recommend, she knows her stuff.

I take fault for not speaking up about the dislike of my hair cut/​color. I had a hair cut and color and highlights– the works. I think the owner did my hair. The hair stylist decided to do my root area a semi-​permanent color and the rest a brown-​ish color. Some of my pieces were uneven. Overall, it was not worth the amount I paid, which with tips I think it was above $ 350-​$ 400.

Very friendly staff. Crystal has skills. Made my highlites look like I was born that way. Love my layered look. Always leave happy.

I was so pleased with my cut by Melodie. The salon itself is a bit like your grandma’s dining room, in terms of décor, but I really liked how quiet and comfortable it was. I used to go to KLS but it is always such a zoo-​getting my haircut there always stressed me out. I left my cut with Melodie feeling relaxed and fabulous. She listened to what I wanted and gave me exactly the right cut. To top it all off, it’s about half the cost of my old salon. Can’t beat that.

Love Brush Strokes. It has a vintage chic look and feel to it and the people are warm and earthy. I usually get stressed out about haircuts but I felt totally relaxed here.
Krystal asked few questions and figured out what I would like for a haircut. She kept me engaged by talking to me. And then when it was done, not only was haircut really awesome but my hair was so smooth and fine.
I would go back here for sure. And I would suggest, you give it a try too. You will go back home happy.

Environment: Wonderful! Antiques in a little cottage house, so much character and beautiful. Your eyes are never bored, as even when you aren’t looking at the décor, there are also jewelry items, makeup, and other things for purchase to view.
Hair Stylist: Beautiful, sweet, and awesome!
Quality: I asked for an odd hair color request. At first, it did not work out as I planned, but I went back in, and she was able to make it awesome– and in a timely manner!
Prices: Average for the area. Not too painful, and totally worth the quality and service!
Coming back again, for sure! (:

By far, the best haircut (by the salon owner) that I have ever had. Even though I am moving out of the area, I will continue to use this salon when I am in town.

Mary is amazing!!! She took out my extensions and gave me a great haircut! My hair had never been so even or looked so healthy! And to top it off Mary is a really kind and personable lady. She is so much fun to talk to. Very funny and smart :) I love this salon!

Melodie is awesome. She had the patience to hear me and give me exactly the cut I wanted. Everybody in the salon are very friendly and the place is nice and cozy. It was my first time at this place and I am surely going to go back to her. They do give complimentary stuff to their first time clients which was quiet generous.

This review is a little late… I got my hair cut back in November by Melodie (I don’t know if that’s how you spell it — sorry!) And she did a fabulous job! I had really long hair and knew I wanted to chop it off to donate it. But that doesn’t mean I wasn’t nervous or second guessing myself. My hair was definitely my safety net. Melodie made me feel very comfortable, answered ALL my questions and addressed ALL my concerns (trust me, there were a lot of them). I have thick curly/​wavy unruly hair that can be difficult to tame — so I was concerned a short bob would make it poof up. Melodie ended up cutting 11 inches off for me and giving me an amazing and stylish cut. She definitely knows what she is doing. The layers in the back were just perfect without being stacked. I will definitely be going back to this salon, specifically for Melodie! Thank you!

I have very thick and dry hair. I have never found someone that knew what to do with it. I met with Jenn Renee and she was amazing! The location is great. In the heart of Herndon. It’s very homey and I felt very welcome as soon as I walked in. I wanted to try something new but Jenn gave me a great consult and suggested something different. I’m glad I listened to her because I absolutely LOVE my new look!!! She’s amazing. Have been bragging to all my friends about her since.

I had a rather… erm, unfortunate hair situation at the beach this August. I ended up looking like neopolitan ice cream, but in weird shades of blonde and not as pretty. After letting it rest and grow out for three months, I finally booked my appoint with Mary to fix it.
I so love her. Let’s forget for a moment that she’s just an amazing person. She’s quite the chemist and quite the artist. She absolutely knew what to do, and not do, to each (cough) horizontal segment of my hair (read: stripes). I wanted her to pull my natural color… now about 1.5 inches at the roots through it all, and use the platinum «sun bleached» as highlights. And of course… to pretend that middle «once was roots then got sun scorched» section just never happened.
She fixed it!!! She fixed it!!! Really, she did. Goodbye platinum puffy 90 210 hair. Hello blended strands of multi-​tonal blonde. True artistry. Thank you Mary.

Alicia is a Jill of all trades! She did one service on me & I was wowed by the outcome & her service so I stuck with her through other much needed services she’s great!

I was looking for a stylist that could cut my short hair without butchering it or turning it into a stuffy «soccer mom» cut. Since my move to NoVA, I’ve had nothing but bad experiences at salons (expensive, high-​end salons, even), to the point I drove 4 hours each way to my old stylist to get it cut last time.
Finally, someone referred me to Brush Strokes, and I was not disappointed. Mary is an excellent stylist, who completely understood what I wanted. My fine, blond hair gives most stylists fits, but she handled it expertly, and the final style is very trendy and sexy, but polished and professional, too.
She took the time to talk with me about not only my style, but my hair, the techniques she thought would work best for both what I wanted and my hair type, and she checked in frequently as she cut to make sure it was going as I wanted. My hair looks and feels great, there was no pressure to purchase products at all (though I did buy the product she used on my hair, because it was perfect for what I wanted). I even let it dry naturally tonight to see how it looked, because sometimes blow drying isn’t the easiest option, and it dried looking really good. I also like that she takes pride in the products she does use and offer for sale, and doesn’t just go with what everyone else has.
While the décor of a salon is less important to me than how I walk out looking and feeling, I did like this place. It had a very eclectic and organic feel to it. The staff was friendly, professional, and engaging, and the overall experience was one I am excited to repeat!

Love this place! Close enough to ride my bike to, they fit me in at the last minute and my blowout looked fantastic.
Pricey ($ 45) but I have a ton of hair and you pay for what you get, so no stars off for the price.
Also super cozy inside, not industrial-​looking like other salons. Love.

I have seen Alicia for skin care many times now and I’m always happy. She is so friendly, flexible and knowledgeable.
I’ve been to Jenn Renee and Mary for my hair. NO COMPLAINTS. I have been traumatized by other stylists when they either chop off my long curly hair or just give me a bad cut. I spoke to Jenn about my concerns and she was very easy to speak to. She also questioned me because had she done what I was asking I would have not been happy. I was using the wrong terminology and she figured I was. :) She asked me was I sure and explained that what I was referring to would result in x, y, z. Thank goodness she questioned and made sure we were both on the same page.
She also said she’d rather take off too little and have me come back then too much and I not be happy. LOVE that. I did end up coming back a week later for her to take off a little more and there was no charge.
My mother has been seeing Mary for over ten years. My mother and I are VERY particular people. We know what we want and won’t continue to patronize a place if we’re not happy.
I would take the negative reviews with a grain of salt. In my experience with the people there, if you’re not completely pleased just tell them. They’re very receptacle and will work with you. They genuinely care about the client and their reputation.
I had the pleasure of meeting another stylist there this past weekend. She washed my hair and I appreciated that she covered my ears and made sure no water got in them. I saw her assisting Mary with another client and she came across as very attentive.
Also, as an ethical vegan there have sometimes been business people who did not take my ethics seriously or were just rude. Not the case here. It also helps that they strive to use eco-​friendly products and cruelty-​free products. They use Tocco Magico and Eufora as examples.
It’s a nice, friendly, family type atmosphere too. Andrea, who works the front desk, is awesome too.

Honestly, I’m pretty disappointed. My go-​to hair person moved to California a few years ago and I’ve been on the hunt for a new one since. Based on the other reviews I had read, I really had high hopes of finding somewhere that could finally cut my crazy curly, frizzy hair. After paying ~$ 250 (including tip) for a cut and highlight, I left a total frizz-​ball with an average cut at best. I was pretty bummed because it is so expensive for me to get my hair done that I only go a few times a year (just because I would rather spend money on my kids than on myself). I had to shower and redo my hair myself before I could out after my cut. I’m sure, like most other salons, they do a great job with «normal» hair, but I’m still on the hunt for somewhere that can handle my crazy mane.
In regards to the boutique itself, it is adorable and cozy and the staff is extremely friendly. Could have been a bit cleaner (noticed lots of hair stuck to the baseboards), but overall it was a low-​key, comfortable atmosphere.

Had my first visit today and loved the place! Initially I had called to make an appointment and ask some questions and both times, I spoke to some of the friendliest ladies in the business, Mary the owner and Alicia, the master esthetician. Both were very patient and kind and answered all my questions.
I was greeted by a very friendly receptionist. The waiting area has comfortable seating and cookies! I was asked if I wanted anything to drink.
The medspa is situated in a cozy little home converted into a spa. They sell my makeup, Jane Iredale which is some of the very best on the market along with other high end skincare products, shampoo and conditioners.
I saw Alicia, the master esthetician for some laser hair removal. They use one of the most gentle yet high-​powered lasers in the business. She was so easy to chat with and very knowledgeable about the products they use and her services. She’s worked with some of the best in the business and has come back to Herndon to work with Mary, the owner who she holds in very high esteem. It seems like such a nice place to work.
If I was not leaving the area soon I would be a regular here. Definitely give this place a try!

I love the calming and homey feel of this unique salon. I am always greeted with a smile and real conversation is always had. The owner and stylists are great people who take an interest in you and listen to what you want. No fake superficial conversations. These ladies care and are extremely friendly, which, sadly is rare in the Reston (Herndon) area.
Alicia does my hair and she does a great job! She is always offering suggestions and telling me about new products the salon has. I get compliments on my hair all the time. Also, the prices are right here. If you get on the salon emailing list, you will get notified of their weekly or monthly specials, which are great deals! This salon does it all– hair, makeup, facials, etc. with a smile :)
