Rewind to Thursday night. Horribly ill, no health insurance for another two months(yay for newly employed syndrome). Friday dawns, and I resort to Googling. When the sun is at a sane hour, I start calling around, seeing who has an appointment slot open and is willing to let me pay out of pocket to not feel like dying. Enter Dr. Rohini Wijetilleke– typically treats children, but happy to make an appointment for me even though she normally takes a half-day on Fridays. Assures me that if I come early she’ll see me if she has a break between other appointments. She asks me, «How did you find me, by the way?» I laugh in embarrassment and admit I looked her up via search engine. She cackles and remarks, «I ought to cut Google a check, they give me so much business!» Instinct to assume that my young looking boyfriend is the patient-to-be disregarded, yay. Tiny office suite with a parking lot that’s a pain to get into. About 3 exam rooms and a minilab crammed down a hallway from the reception counter littered with carts of patient folders, she’s a one-woman machine. Hard of hearing and sometimes hard to communicate with, but is also capable of chatting up her clients in basic Spanish, and of directing them to the nearest ATM. Did I mention cash only? She can even give you an accurate quote, then knock off $ 10 to make your day, and add a refill to your prescription. I’d definitely pay her a visit if I get shot in a getaway, haha.
