This restaurant should be named«Mountain View Sandwich Shop,» because this is a short order grill. While there is absolutely nothing wrong with that, calling this restaurant a BBQ joint is misleading. My advice is to skip the barbecue and order the burger, hot dog, or Southern menu choices. If you come here solely for BBQ, you’re going to be SOL. The owner and employees are friendly. The clientele is a work crowd, and again, that’s okay. Prices are inexpensive. Get here early for lunch, because seating is limited and they get busy during lunchtime.

Nothing tasted homemade here, in fact I dare say I could have produced a better bbq dinner from pre-made products from across the street at Food Lion. The chopped bbq was lukewarm with a bland taste. The sauce didn’t help much, it was sweet without much flavor. Overall the entrée seemed mushy. The coleslaw lacked ‘punch’ and was too finely cut. Baked beans tasted like they were straight from the can and like they had been cooking in the pot too long. The hush puppies were standard fare, doubtful they were anything more than frozen from the restaurants supplier. The restaurant itself is tired, many fixtures need repair, especially seat cushions. I am only giving two stars because the staff was friendly and have good service. I would say go somewhere else in Hickory for your bbq fix.(Even the local elementary school cafeteria could produce a better bbq plate!)

We went here to try to get a taste of tomato-based NC barbecue. My point of comparison was Backyard BBQ in Durham(visited a few days prior). The chopped bbq was surely drier, finely chopped. It came with a ketchup-dominant sauce that was adequate, but not particularly noteworthy. The slaw accompanied it well. The green beans were thoroughly stewed and quite soft. The most memorable take-away was the hush puppies: well-cooked little tubes. They’re the best I’ve had. People were very friendly; place is very casual.
