Black Sheep at Orenco

I am truly thankful when I chanced onto Black Sheep at Orenco nearly two nears ago. I don’t remember what brought me to look for locally owned yarn stores or what convinced me that I should attend one of their weekly handwork guild groups, but I’m very glad for it. The store itself is homey and is filled with quality fibers and tools. The price will fit the quality. The store carries everything from imported fibers to local yarns dyed by local designers, so you shouldn’t expect JoAnn’s acrylic yarn pricing because that isn’t what they sell. The employees are not only helpful and knowledgeable, but they’re wonderfully patient if you’re a novice and overall very nice. They clearly work there because they love working with yarn.
The classes they offer are fantastic. The teachers are passionate about their crafts, and that really translates well in the lesson plan. I’ve taken classes in knitting, (shuttle) tatting, felting, and bobbin lace. I love taking classes here because the atmosphere is easy-​going and very supportive.
The handwork guild group meetings are great if you’re new to the area and would like to make new friends. Everyone is kind and very welcoming, and I believe it’s because everyone who frequents the store really wants to create such an atmosphere. There is bound to be someone who can help you with your project or teach you a new technique.
I think you go to Black Sheep at Orenco for the great stuff, but you end up staying for the people. You really can’t go wrong with this awesome place.

Its a tiny little basement shop. Not much to choose from and way over priced… Min I saw
was $ 8.00 a spool and they where not very big… For a decent baby blanket your looking at a min of $ 40 to $ 200.00 (yes they are selling spools for $ 40-​$ 60 each). I wish i just went to JoAnn’s. Granted I do not like box stores, but…

I love this store! The classes are great and the staff is so helpful. Meet ups for knitting and spinning are fun too. If she doesn’t have it she will order it.

Best shop on the west side in my opinion! They carry lots of workhorse yarns plus some really nice top shelf brands. Tina has not just knitting and crochet yarns, she carries fiber for spinning, has a drum carder that you can rent by the hour, and carries lots of local indie dyers in yarn and fiber. She also has tatting supplies: shuttles, threads, and books. Be sure to check the calendar on the website for open knitting/​crafting times and classes.

The Black Sheep at Orenco is a cozy little yarn shop in the heart of Orenco Station, nestled in the lower level of a 3 story town home. There is a fairly good selection of yarn from wool, wool blends, cotton, alpaca, bamboo and other blends. The owner is super nice and very willing to place an order if what you need is not in stock.
Classes are also offered, as well as a knitting help night on Tuesdays.
Need your yarn wound? They will do that at no charge for you. There is also a small assortment of needles, hooks and scissors to browse through. Prices are right, and occasional sales are also nice.
