Pepper’s Mexican Grill

Better place than most mexican restaurants in the area. I had a groupon which they were happy to use. The portions are huge and the prices are cheap.

Nice surprise when we were out grocery shopping. Good basic food and really nice staff.

I eat lunch here two or three times per month. It is consistently good — nothing fancy, but that is how I like my Mexican food, simple and delicious. One of my favorite things on the menu is the chicken chimichanga. It is a small place and can get very busy on Friday’s with the Intel crowd, so I always try to get there by 11:30. Hillsboro has no shortage of Mexican restaurants, I have tried most of them, and this is the one that I come back to again and again.

This place seems to cater to regulars. If you are a regular you probably get great service.
I had a chimi and it was good. I ordered it without rice and it was full of rice.
Never had anyone come by to check on me or refill water glass
If you live in the area give it try. Do not go out of your way to get here.
I won’t be back.

I’m surprised why I don’t come here more often. Love their happy hour, good food, good service, etc. Outdoor seating during good season.

If it weren’t for the fact that most reviewers who are giving 4 and 5 stars have a decent amount of other reviews, I’d think that they were shill accounts.

The salsa was okay, but honestly you can find better in the store. A LOT better. Sadly this is pretty much the high point of my review.
For our meal, we ordered the steak/​chicken fajitas, and chicken/​pork tamales.
It’s obvious that corners are being cut every chance that they get. The rice and beans that came out were pitifully small, I’ve ordered a child’s rice and beans and seen more. We got all of 4 tortillas, that wasn’t a mistake either as we asked for flour and they brought corn instead. Both ways, 4. This would be on the small side for one person, since we were splitting this 3 ways (2 adults, 1 kid) we ran out of tortillas pretty much right away. The chicken was okay, if overcooked a bit. The steak is a cheap cut (nothing against cheap cuts, I cook with them myself all the time), and nothing was done to help with the fact that it was a cheap cut. Being overcooked made that worse. The flavor was… odd. I’ve never had steak with that sort of flavor, and I’ve eaten a lot of Mexican food. Not bad, but unusual.
Okay, here’s one of the weird parts. The onions were undercooked. Not raw, they were mostly cooked, but they weren’t soft yet (still crunchy). The bell pepper was soft, which means they were started at the same time. (Hint: onions take much longer to cook than bell pepper.) The veggies also had zero seasoning. The only thing I can think of is that the meat and veggies were cooked separately, which would be unusual to say the least.
The tamales were, in a word, terrible. Then corn wasn’t steamed properly, so it was still mostly uncooked. It was obvious that they then threw the tamales in a tray and left them on a heat source, since the bottom of both tamales were burnt. One was so hard, I literally couldn’t stab through it with my fork. The meat inside was flavored okay, but overcooked. The corn was pretty much flavorless, what little we could eat.
I will say this, the service was good (not exceptional, but slightly better than average). I ALMOST added another star for the service, but since everything else was pretty much as bad as it can get, I just can’t do it.
Maybe one day I’ll find a good Mexican restaurant (that isn’t a food cart). This one, sadly, is not it.

Pepper’s has good food and a friendly staff. I’ve been there a couple times now due to the proximity to the Pacific University Health Professions Campus. I was pleasantly surprised that I could use my $ 20 Groupon for take-​out lunch. This meant I got a fish taco dish, a three tamale dish, two steak tacos, and chips and salsa and had ton’s of leftovers to share with my fiancé.
There steak fajitas are delicious. I’ve also really liked everything else I’ve had there. The fish taco was huge and yummy. Loved that it had a big piece of avocado on it. Steak tacos have too many raw onions for me but they were easy to take off. Food comes out quickly. Pepper’s is worth checking out if you’re in the area

So far the best Mexican food I’ve tried in the Portland area. Comparable to decent places in AZ

We love Peppers, fresh authentic food actually cooked by a Mexican Chef. never greasy, great service and delicious drinks. Good chips and salsa too.

What kind of Mexican restaurants are these reviewers accustomed to? …Peppers was awful – as far as what you would expect from paying someone to cook food for you. The only things marginally acceptable were the chips and salsa. I ordered a chicken chimichanga. The fried tortilla was flimsy, the chicken tasted like hot dog «meat», and I was given (maybe) a teaspoon of pico de gallo with my plate. My dad ordered beef and chicken enchiladas. He reported that, amazingly, both variations of the meat enchiladas had no flavor. Not surprising. I’m sad that the people of Hillsboro think this is good Mexican food because it absolutely is not. But then again… Many of the restaurants (except for the chain restaurants) in the Hillsboro area aren’t what I would consider palatable.

Pleasantly surprised after finally visiting this Hillsboro favorite after living here for a decade.
Found the low-​key look very charming, the few times we’ve gone so far the weather has been nice and we’re sat ouside on the patio.
The enchilada sauce is downright addictive, and their tequila selection is impressive, and not overpriced, either. Great margaritas.
The waitstaff is friendly and bilingual, and more thane happy to let you practice your Español with them.
I look forward to eating there again very soon.

Terrible service. Waiter completely ignored our table for 45 minutes while waiting for entrees. Had to hunt down workers delivering chips and salsa to ask for drink refills. Food needed seasoning. I can’t believe I’m writing that about a Mexican restaurant. This place is very hit or miss and lately it’s been more miss as in FAIL. Definitely not impressed. Not sure if I’ll be back.

It’s unfortunate, because we love Mexican restaurants.
We tried this place back in 2010, they weren’t anything to write home about; so we never went back, until 2015. We tried it again because my husband was on Unilocal,saying «Maybe we should give Peppers another try, they got good reviews». I was hoping that they hired a new chef.
Well let me tell you, they didn’t improve on anything, food, drinks, salsa, nothing. It’s just a restaurant that we’ll probably never go back.

We love love love it here! My husband and son are here probably 3 days a week, at least.

I’ve seen some pretty good looking margaritas come out of the bar, and the bloody mary’s are tasty.
The staff is very friendly and attentive, they probably could put in our order when they see our car drive up.
The place is small, so expect a wait during busy hours

Peppers is another one of my lunch spots. This place tucked away in a pink building in Hillsboro is a gem for excellent mexican food. The chips and salsas they give are tasty and really hard to stop eating. The chile relleno is one of the best I ever had. Amazing flavors and not too greasy. The chicken diablo is also really good. I have been here many times and I love their burritos and enchiladas too. The service is friendly and quick. I have heard many good things about their margaritas but have never tried one yet since I always come here for lunch from work. I will try the margarita one of these days and update my review.

So living in Hillsboro I have become accustomed to above average Mexican food. Peppers didn’t disappoint. Getting in the restaurant was a little awkward. Parking was a little bit of a challenge, but it was quite worth it. As per usual first come the tortilla chips. They were thick and tasty, and the salsas were also really good. I favor the Spicer one. Honestly we ate two baskets of them.guilty.
Then on to the main course. I got the Burrito Colarado. When this was placed in front of me, I knew what I was going to have for lunch tomorrow. Biggest burrito I have ever seen. It was chocked full of beef, beans and the red sauce was really good.
Wife got the Carne Asada. .steak was perfectly cooked and really juicy. I only got a taste because my it was my wife’s, but I am thinking about getting it next time, and there will be a next time.
Fantastic food, service, and the wait was totally worth it.

Peppers makes some amazing food. I had the steak fajita and I was not disappointed. The steak they use is perfectly seasoned and seared just right. The corn tortillas were amazing too but I had to ask for more because there was a lot of steak. My girlfriend got the steak tostadas and those were amazing as well. It’s safe to say that everything I have tried from here has been great.

So we’ve driven by Pepper’s rounded pink building for years and years, but never actually swung in. Thanks to a recent Groupon, Wife N and I decided to make it a mid-​week (Thursday) date night.
We started off with some drinks. I had the «Top Shelf» Margarita (otherwise known as a Cadillac Margarita), shaken. They didn’t spare much in terms of Tequila and Grand Marnier and even the small size was plenty. One of the better house Margarita’s I’ve imbibed. Wife N. had the Chambord (Black Raspberry) margarita blended, but it was too dilute with all the ice. We think it would have been better shaken.
I had a combo platter called the Tampico which is a Chile Relleno (chese-​stuffed Poblano pepper), a beef enchilada and a chicken taco. They were all flavorful, though admittedly not particularly spicy despite the location. Wife N had Steak Fajitas, which arrived sizzling hot as expected. The steak was well done, but still very tender and flavorful. While I’ve been to some places where the fajitas are served in a pool of grease, this wasn’t one of them – no oiliness at all.
The baskets of chips were okay; we liked the salsas (especially the one with the black pepper in it) but we thought the chips were too thick. The flour tortillas also tasted store-​bought and not made fresh to order.
Quantity of food was excellent; for the $ 14 – 16 a plate we were absolutely stuffed. Drink sizes were great for the money as well (I can’t remember the last Cadillac Margarita I had for less than $ 10 and this one was around $ 8 for the small size).
No problems presenting our Groupon (note: the vendor is supposed to mark it as redeemed, not you) which was gladly and quickly accepted.
Overall, solid 3.5*s and we’ll be back.

I ordered the Chicken Mole, which appears on the menu as «Puebla’s most famous dish.» This was the worst mole I have ever tried. It was bland and almost sour, not sweet and spicy as the menu proclaims. Also, the chicken was bone dry. If there wasn’t any mole to smother the chicken in, I would have choked on the dry chicken. I took a picture of the $ 5.99 Guacamole that the menu says is a «[g]enerous helping,» but couldn’t have consisted of more than one small avocado with a little bit of chopped tomato. I was VERY disappointed. Also, I had a stomach ache later that evening when I tried to go to sleep. The food didn’t sit well with me.
Go to Taqueria Hermanos Ochoa’s across the street for better food, bigger servings and a tastier meal.

Pepper’s has legit margaritas. Yes, yes they do.
The chile rellano has fire roasted poblano peppers that are juicy and has many a dark burnt roasted parts and soft stringy creamy cheese! YUM. As my much obsessed search and trek into finding the best chile rellano still is a rollin since middle school. Geez this is a straight up obsession!
Their table salsa is good yes. But ask for their hot habanero salsa, their green salsa, or the avocado cream sauce, comes in little ketchup like squeeze bottles so a few a drops a chip you will enjoy your tasty salsa smörgåsbord. YES.
Tacos is one of our favs here, they have good ol pollo or asada to carnitas to lengua. Topped just the way they should be w cilantro and white onion. Perfecto!
Atmosphere is nice and flowy, and small but that’s okay cuz it’s not cramped. No booths, all tables. Their is outdoor seating which you can’t see at all unless your out their duh. :) But when passing by outside it sounds like a party going down!!! It’s nice out now, so it seems like a great idea to sit outside while we can. :) margarita in one hand a taco in the other… we can pretend we are back down south of the border for a hot minute!!!
Btw they open earlier too. 10am. Yay!!! Tacos and margaritas for breakfast IS the breakfast of champions!
