Avalon at the Hingham Shipyard

Terrible first experience and waste of time. I called Avalon on Thursday of last week to discuss my options for a 6-​month least as we are in between home buying. I gave the woman on the phone my requirements and budget and was told that this would be feasible for a six month rental. I walked into the leasing office today and within 5 minutes of being there, was quoted a price that was $ 1500/​month more than what was discussed on the phone (keep in mind my budget was not out of the question to begin with). Total bait and switch and a huge waste of my time. UNIMPRESSED.

My fiancé and I moved here about 5 months ago and I can’t say enough good things about our experience living here so far. Luckily, it’s been a mild winter, but when it has snowed, the plowing happens immediately. If there’s a maintenance request, they are super responsive. The office staff, specifically, Jacy and Colleen, are awesome to work with. I recently misplaced my keys and Colleen made accommodations to get the keys to me when I wasn’t going to be home knowing the office would be closed the next day. Jacy helped us with an initial move in snafu that was out of her control (even though she was very new to her role) and quickly put us at ease to fix the issue.
If you work in Boston, you can’t beat the proximity to the ferry and it’s really nice having shopping, restaurants, and a movie theater nearby!

My wife and I moved here over the winter, and it’s been a cut-​and-​dry fantastic experience. When it snows, they plow immediately. When the sun comes out, they landscape. When my appliance breaks down, the maintenance guys come running. Property management is a tough gig, and the team here is very, very good at it. I would say it’s like living in a hotel, but as a Hilton guy, no kidding, I like my apartment better.
The location, needless to say, is tops. The shopping center nearby has a good blend of stores and restaurants, but we’ve really been enjoying the proximity to the ferry. Being able to hop on the ferry to the airport, or for an impromptu North End dinner, has been life-​changing.
One minor gripe, just so I don’t sound like a total shill: The windows let in a lot of ambient noise. If someone outside is being loud, you’ll probably hear it. That said, I’ve been in lux apartments that were twice as expensive and twice as noisy, so I don’t consider this a big drawback — especially because the residents are all conscious of this, and very courteous.
In all, I would absolutely recommend this property to others.

We moved from NY to Boston and toured apartment after apartment in Braintree, Quincy, Hingham, and Hull. We actually drove past Avalon at the shipyard because they were the top of our budget, but couldn’t resist the look. Staff was very accommodating to us every time we came into the office. Love, love, love our apartment! We are in a 2 bed with loft, honestly the only noise we have heard is, if we are in the bedroom we can here neighbors toilet paper roll, lol. We have never heard anything else not even the toilet flushing. Never here neighbors coming or going. Amenities are great, exercise equipment does have breakdowns but there is always an empty machine to use. Location is wonderful! Walk to ferry, walk to eat, walk to the movies, walk to grocery shop, walk to marina.
Maintenance staff is excellent in ther response times, always courteous and friendly.
Worth the price.

I really like the Avalon at the Shipyard. The office and maintenance people are very friendly and helpful. They keep the complex and buildings looking top notch. We are happy that we moved here.

I toured the Avalon Apartments at The Hingham Shipyard yesterday.
What a total disappointment.
Shoddy construction.
Looked like a cheap hotel room with hollow doors, cheap plywood kitchen cabinets, cheap industrial lighting fixtures and what looked like a used refrigerator.
All for a minimum of $ 2600/​month without utilities.
The town of Hingham should be ashamed to have allowed such shoddy construction. Wonder who was paid off !!!
DO NOT GO THERE. SAVE YOUR MONEY. YOU WOULD BE BETTER IN A TRAILER PARK !!!

* Convenient to Hingham Ferry
* Relatively new apartments
* Friendly service at the Welcome Center (as opposed to corporate)
Cons
* Construction is low quality.
* Very thin walls (you can hear your neighbors TV program and alarm clock clearly).
* Very drafty windows (we had to crank the heat in the 1BR apartment to stay warm in the winter)
* Gym equipment is often broken.
* Most importantly — TERRIBLE EXPERIENCE with the corporate office.
1. They used small print in my move out documents to try to change the terms of my flexible lease contract. This would have resulted in me paying an additional 2.5 months of additional rent. When I disputed and held them to the original contract that I signed, they told me they’d «help me out» and but that I shouldn’t «spread the word.»
2. I was told by the Welcome Office that I could avoid a post-​move out cleaning charge if I cleaned the apartment myself. I scrubbed the apartment clean, patched holes, and left the apartment in very good condition. Nonetheless, I was charged $ 210 anyway.
3. Corporate told me to not pay with cleaning charge while they investigated my claim that the apartment was left clean. Apparently they never dropped the charge/​sent me a follow up bill — instead I got a notice from a collection agency that my $ 210 payment was past due.
Overall, Avalon made my move-​out experience overly complicated, more costly than expected, and they have not been customer-​friendly. To any folks considering living here — read your contracts and bills carefully and be prepared to shell out more money than expected at the end of your lease.

Amazing poor first experience.
I arrived at the shipyard at 3:50 for a 4pm appointment. The address was a little difficult for navigation, so I called for specifics. A fellow told me he was inside of what the shipyard was and asked me what state it was in. After 5 minutes of vague directions I had to hang up.
I found it myself a few minutes later and walked in. It was 4:10. I was told that In would not be given the scheduled appointment because 4pm was too late.
I’m speachless regarding this experience, however if this is a hint of the experience that others can have here run far away. I really am amazed at this poor service and lack of sense.
