History

Established in 1961.

In 1965, Bill Gothard’s alma mater, Wheaton College, invited him to design and teach a course based on his work helping young people make wise choices. The course was given the name «Basic Youth Conflicts.» Two hours of upper-division undergraduate and graduate credit were awarded to students completing the course. Forty-six students, youth pastors, and teachers registered for the first class. The next year 120 students enrolled in Basic Youth Conflicts.

In the years that followed, Basic Youth Conflicts was offered in several new locations. Alumni were informed of the dates and told their friends about it. Soon seminar attendance averaged between 10,000 and 20,000 youth and adults. Now, almost 40 years later, hundreds of smaller seminars are still being conducted in cities throughout the United States and other nations.

Meet the Business Owner

Bill G.

Business Owner

At the age of 15, Bill was greatly concerned for many of his high school classmates, who seemed to lack direction in life and were making unwise decisions. Realizing that they would have to live with the consequences of these decisions, he dedicated his life to helping teenagers and their parents make wise choices.

He began working with inner-city gangs in Chicago, church youth groups, high school clubs, youth camps, and families in crisis. He was then invited to design and teach a course at Wheaton College based on his experiences working with young people. The course was given the name «Basic Youth Conflicts.»

Those who learned and applied this training found lasting solutions, and soon this course developed into a 32-hour seminar. Over 2.7 million people have now attended the Basic Seminar.

In addition to presenting seminars, Bill is a prolific writer. To find out more about Bill Gothard, visit his personal Web site at billgothard.com
