We were so excited to move into our new apartment – only to find out that for the convenience of having a key fob to gain access to our building, the management wanted $ 80 apiece. It would cost us $ 80 to have an extra keycard for the guests we have visit. This seemed like an exorbitant fee for the «amenity» of having… a spare key?!

We have a technology background and purchased the proper equipment to copy our own keys. We realized that if our building was charging us this much, other buildings must be, too! We have heard of prices as high as $ 300 per key – and some buildings that refuse to provide an extra key at all.

This represented an opportunity in the marketplace for a secure electronic key-​copying service. You pay extra to have a secure building – why pay extra to have access to it?
