It’s Saturday night, 9:30pm, and I’m stuck in line at Mann’s Graumann Chinese Theater with B, waiting for an LA Screamfest screening of «Martyrs»… what does this have to do with Afterhour Power? I’m getting there… So the film was supposed to start at 9:30 and the plan was to go out later that night if I could find something to get into. Anyway, the show is running late. Boo. I tell B, «We’re out of here if this line doesn’t move by 10:15»… it doesn’t, so we bounce. We were thinking of getting some ice cream, when on the way to the car I get a text from R, «Want to meet up and go to party w me?» Nice. I drop B off and get ready. She’s tired anyway, so it’s not like I’m ditching her. Cut to midnight. R and I are at an underground on Broadway. Dope music, but it’s pretty empty. Party-wise, it’s not dead, but it’s skin is clammy and cold to the touch, it’s breathing is labored, and the prognosis is grim. I know K is at Afterhour Power, so I wonder if it’s better there. I text her, «How is it there?» She responds, «craaaazzzzy» Psh, that’s all I need to know, girlfriend. R and I dance for a few minutes, then we roll out. Cut to 1:01am… we are in, and the madness begins. Thousands of people, awesome music, good times. Burridge was throwing down some awesome minimal house and R and I were pretty much dancing the whole night. Unfortunately, with venues like this, the floor can get packed. R did an amazing job of making room for us with some creative dancing, though, so it was all good. There were a few creeps trolling around for free gropes(no, they weren’t trying to feel ME, silly) and a few catty girls with crappy attitudes, but overall it was a good crowd. No alpha beefcakes, no stress, no drama. Most people simply wanted to have a good time. I’m all for that. Dirty South took the reigns at 2:30am and pretty much rocked the house. A gaggle of go-go dancers, a wacky ass robot, the works. We moved up to the balcony where we had more room to dance, and a view to boot. Every so often, we’d take a break out in the smoking section, which albeit packed, is a good spot to chill, get some fresh air(it’s somewhere there between the clouds of nicotine), have some good convo, and is an excellent people watching location. Unfortunately, I had to go to work at 10 that day, so we took off at around 5ish. But argh, did I want to stay longer. Good times.

Always looking forward to these events. Sooooo much fun! Dirty South played at this last 9th Anniversary this Saturday and his set was pretty good. Too bad the BF and I couldn’t hang to see the finale and left at 4:30. It’s all good though. Still had a great time.

As Bong mentioned, this place has been going off since I don’t even remember. It’s been at Avalon for the past few years and prior to that I was lucky enough to catch it when it was at The Factory. Afterhour Power is a production. It’s not some regular club. There’s crazy lights, crazy costumes, naked/half naked go-go dancers and last night a big fawking 15 foot tall robot? Damn that scared the bejesus out of me! Though the owner Steve Castro is the butt of all jokes in the EDM scene because he’s known for his horrible trainwreck sets, he does put on a good show. And why do I know this? Because I was sober and still thought it was cool! =P Dirty South is one of my fave deejays and he definitely brought the crowd. He came on after Steve’s cheesy sample of some Metallica/Scorpions/Whatever song but Dirty brought it aftewards! Definitely had a had proggy beat to it! Crowd went nuts when dirty opened with his own remix of Tiesto’s «In the Dark» and about 5:00AM, he dropped a sick remix of Eurythmics«Sweet Dreams.» Insanity! I left at 6AM and there still was about 1000 people left in the club. God damn! I’ve always liked it because I work on the weekend nights and sometimes don’t get off work until 11 or 12 and usually miss most parties and regular clubs.

9 year anniversary was actually 10⁄18 this year for some reason. Guest DJ’s were Lee Burridge and Dirty South. both great sets. Same good times tho except for a couple of changes. Parking is now $ 25, even if you park across the street. The cover was $ 20 before 12a, $ 35 before 2a and $ 45 after 2a. What recession? The place was packed. PS ~ next update will probably be around the same time next year. Highlight of the night for me was Hellbutt the Giant Robot
