I’m a guy so here is my review. So glad to see Amy on here getting reviews. She has been cutting my hair for years now. I m not sure how I stumbled upon her. I think I read some review about 6 years ago in the Honolulu Weekly or somehwere and I was looking for a low key place close to downtown. Well, she’s been cutting my hair ever since. I’ve badly done it myself a few times lol but she’s always there to fix it up for me. I’m bad at asking for last minute appts, but Amy is always able to squeeze me in some time either that day or next. She is very fast, listens to what you want and delivers what you want. So easy to get there, as others said, right on Maunakea in that stall area behind the lei shop mixed between soe jewelry places. If she needs me to wait for a few minutes while she is finishing up with somebody, I just go next door to that chinese bakery and get a few Ma Tai Su(this incredible baked dumpling with ground pork, shrimp and bamboo shoots in a phylo do) Amy is great!

I just got my haircut from Amy today and I love it! The last time I got bangs at another salon — I got the«China Doll» look which was bad and that cost me $ 58! At Asian Hair Design, I spent only $ 22 for a haircut plus shampoo(and added a tip on top of that). A women’s cut without shampoo is only $ 18 and men’s cuts are $ 16. I love my bangs now and I appreciated her suggestion to lighten up my ends so it’s not the usual boring blunt cut — the subtle changes really perked up my look. As Emi said, this is not a fancy schmancy place, it’s tucked between a Chinese herb shop and a jewelry counter, in a Chinatown mini-mall alley. But she’s fast and gives a great cut. The only negative was that I didn’t realize had flecks of hair(some large ones too) all over my face until I got back to my office.

Amy is, by far, the most knowledgeable and artistic hair stylist I’ve been to. A lot of salons diversify and want to be your«one stop shop» but when you need a great haircut, look to Amy — she knows her styling!

Why go to an expensive hair salon and spend over $ 60 on a «FOB» style cut, when you can go to Amy at Asian Hair Design and get the same look for $ 25? When I need a haircut, I don’t care how pretty or luxurious a salon looks inside – I care that my hair looks fabulous after its been cut. That said, I’ve been going to Amy(who owns at runs Asian Hair Design solo) for my haircuts for about 4 years now. She speaks English and Chinese. I won’t lie – the location of this place is a hole-in-the-wall, hot/humid, tiny, weird-smelling place in Chinatown – but I keep coming back here even after trying some more expensive places. Why? Amy really knows how to achieve those awesome Asian-style cuts that many of us are looking for, but are too expensive at the places that specialize in them. She’s very sweet and personable, and makes you feel great about yourself and your hair. I notice she has a diverse range of clients – babies, teens, elders, men, women, etc. I’ll continue to go to Amy as long as I’m living on this island and therefore continue getting complimented on my hair everywhere I go! Bottom line: If you’re on a serious budget and still want great hair, look no further than Asian Hair Design! You won’t get luxury or ambience, but I’m sure some of you could sacrifice that simply for the fabulous haircut at a killer price!
