Garrett T Hayashi, DDS

The following is just my opinion: I used to go to this dentist many years ago (around 1999) and I’m surprised he’s still around. It felt like every time I went there, they tried to find something wrong with me (you know like when you go to an auto mechanic and lo and behold, he finds that he has to repair something that was never bothering you?) One example of this was this dentist said that I was grinding my teeth so that I would need to get an expensive mouth guard, which no other dentist had told me I needed. I could be wrong but I felt like this office just wanted my money. In fact, you can google this and many dentists say that such guards are not needed except in extreme cases (and this is often a money maker). When he said I needed a mouth guard, that was the last straw. I went to a different dentist who I’ve now been with for going on 20 years and he is just awesome! My current dentist also told me (when I first started going to him) that no mouth guard was needed. Now, around 16 years later, I have never had a mouth guard and I’m just fine! :) However, the caveat to this review is that my experience with this dentist was quite a while ago – he may be different now.

I hardly ever write a review, but I do want to let others know about the people at Garrett Hayashi, DDS’ dental practice. I interacted with four people, and each of them – the person at the front desk, Dr. Hayashi, his assistant Lori, and the hygienist Annie – were great. It was my first time there, after a bad experience at another office. Completed all the paperwork online, so all I had to do was sign when I got there today.
Didn’t have any cavities (yay!) and so haven’t yet had any repair work done by Dr. Hayashi, but his manner and the fact that I’ve already learned a lot just from talking to him, assure me that he knows what he’s doing. His assistant Lori used digital x-​ray and photography devices expertly while we chatted about nephew graduations and travels. But what most amazed me today was the extraordinary level of care taken by the empath hygienist, Annie, as she performed an overdue cleaning. In her hands, even the sonic instrument she used caused no discomfort at all. I can tell you that this is a first for me. Truly professionals, all.

I’ve always felt neutral about dentists (glad it’s never been negative) but with Dr. Hayashi I feel extra positive. Not only is the entire staff in his office courteous and professional, but they keep an extremely clean and efficient running office. I never feel like I’m wasting time while sitting on the chair.
But probably the best part is when I see my dental claims paperwork weeks after my visit. I’ve gone through a graft surgery with a periodontal specialist that Dr. Hayashi referred me to (his name is Dr. Umaki and also a great dentist — I’ve written a separate review for him). Both Dr. Hayashi and Dr. Umaki have tag teamed my recovery stage, giving me routine post surgery checkups and teeth cleaning. It made me worry initially that there are so many post surgery appointments, but I’m glad that they’re all part of the surgery service at no extra cost.
In fact, I see that my insurance only covers a portion of the bill (albeit the majority of it) and that there are some costs that I’m supposed to pay out of pocket. But Dr. Hayashi’s office did not bill me for those costs uncovered by my insurance and that’s a sign of just doctors caring for patients, not about squeezing every penny they can out of patients.

All I’m saying is Mr. Hayashi’s office explained to my fiancé and I that we both had several cavities and that my fiancé had to get his wisdom teeth out asap. Things were totaling up to be about $ 1000 with everything combined. We decided to go to another dentist in Honolulu to try and get a cheaper price for all the work that we needed done. Come to find out that I didn’t even have any cavities, and that my fiancé doesn’t need to get his wisdom teeth out. Not really sure what was going on there, but it seems like they just wanted my money.

The dental office of a Mr. Garrett Hayashi is the best thing, dental-​wise, that has ever happened to me. I had an awesome dentist who lost his lease and became part of a not-​so-​awesome practice which inhibited his skills and value, then I had an overpriced dentist who charged me an arm and a leg and a baby’s bottom for everything. Everything. Who has to pay $ 100 for a cleaning covered completely by insurance? Suckers. Like I used to be.
Enter my eldest brother who speaks worlds of his dentist, Dr. Hayashi, and a sudden, impulsive desperation to whiten my teeth. Next thing I know I am being examined, photographed, x-​rayed, and then given a clearly explained treatment plan by a dentist who seems like he would just love to spend all day answering my questions. Impressed.
Front desk Cori? Wonderful. I love her. She also makes cakes. Amazing, amazing cakes. If you need a jaw-​dropping, gorgeous cake, go to none other than Cori at Dr. Hayashi’s. Unrelated yet related.
After hearing my treatment plan I was expecting to be quoted, literally, $ 10,000. Or near that. My actual quote was far less which makes my previous dentist seem even more overpriced. He was a good dentist (his partner not so much), just so very expensive.
Dental assistant? INCREDIBLE. I opted for the in-​house whitening procedure, set an appointment, came in for the appointment, and she actually talked me out of it and into at-​home whitening for HALF THE PRICE because it would yield better results. Wow, I say, wow. No one cared that I had booked a two hour time slot, no one cared about the profit loss, everyone cared about me. That is special.
The real test comes in a few weeks when it is time to numb me. Dentists have a very difficult time numbing me. As I’ve mentioned in another review, my oral surgeon never did completely numb me for my wisdom tooth extractions and it was one of the most excruciating experiences of my life. Floats up near pushing human beings out of my private place.
This review is becoming very strange…
Suffice to say, I am confident my numbing experience will be fantastic and I will stay with Dr. Hayashi for the rest of my life. Unless I move. But then I could visit to see him, so I stand by the first statement. But amend it to the rest of his life as I plan to live until I’m 110 and he is older than me. That’s not morbid, it’s factual.
I’m going to stop writing.
Dr. Hayashi rocks.

Ive had a dental phobia and previously skipped the dentist for at least 10 years. A few years ago my teeth had been botherinng me so seeking dental work was an absolute must. :(
I had a wisdom tooth pulled, a root canal, cavities filled, 1 tooth crowned and another extracted. This work was not done by Dr. Hayashi but I sought Dr. Hayashi’s expertise after recommendation from my gf.
Apparently the tooth that was extracted was not completely removed and was causing me pain. I called Dr. Hayashi’s office on Monday, went in on Tuesday for xrays and complete extraction of that damn tooth and was told to come back on Wednesday for a cleaning.
Wednesday morning Dr. Hayashi personally called me to see how I was doing! This blew my mind and made me feel like he cares about his patients! By the way, the tooth extraction went smoothly and the most I felt was the numbing needle.
Annie the hygienist did my teeth cleaning and was the sweetest! Not judgemental at all and made the experience less stressful than ive remembered with other hygienists. Minimal pain, mostly due to cold sensitivity but other than that, it was great! My teeth looked 100 times better than before! Thanks, Annie, youre the best!
I go back to see Dr. Hayashi so we can work out a treatment plan. If any updating needs to be done in the near future, ill certainly be back to drop by 2 cents! :)

I’m not typically a fan of dentists for most of the same reasons that the rest of you all out there are… However, after my first visit here from a recommendation from a friend, I’m glad that I’ve chosen to make this spot the place I go to for all of my dental needs!
The staff are overall great and pleasant which makes office visits less anxious and nerve wracking. Dr. Hayashi himself is also a great pleasure too and does a great job of ensuring that you have a great white & straight smile without making the experience uncomfortable. He really cares for your teeth and gives great advice which is always appreciated. His dental assistants are also awesome and do a great job of sending people home with a great smile and shiny teeth too.

I had been thinking of changing dentists since I was not enamored with Gentle Dental. The last straw was when they cancelled my cleaning appointment — again — because they are ‘going through some changes.’
Fellow Unilocaler, Susan S., had recommended Dr. Hayashi to me and yesterday I called them to see if I could get in to see them soon. They brought me in immediately to do the xrays and exam and today is my cleaning. That, my friends, is customer service!
My exam with Dr. Hayashi was very thorough and he spent quite some time going over my xrays and telling me the good news (no cavities) and the bad news (need a deep cleaning).
Nice clean office in a building across the street from where I work. Friendly staff. I don’t think it gets any better than that!

My teeth have forever been «a work in progress», and I’ve visited many dentists, but Dr. Hayashi and his team are the best and greatest I’ve ever experienced.
His staff and team are always friendly and welcoming. They always want to make sure you’re comfortable and not in any type of pain if they’re working on your teeth.
Dr. Hayashi is very straightforward, but nice. He offers a wide range of services, including the regulars like fillings and teeth cleaning, as well as other more specific services like invisalign, crowns, and removal of wisdom teeth. He ALWAYS asks you if you’re comfortable or can feel any pain every step of the way and he walks you through what he’s doing and the process that he’s going though while he’s doing it. This helps me to know what he’s doing and what to expect. Also, after some particularly complicated dental procedures, Dr. Hayashi called me personally the same day to make sure I felt okay. I thought that this was a very nice gesture.
You should definitely talk to him and tell him your expectations and wishes, and he’ll do his best to accommodate you. My dad and I made it clear to him that your teeth are your only set for life, so to please use the best practices and materials, even if it was costly, and Dr. Hayashi did that as well as worked out the best course of action factoring in insurance, cost, and work.
I have never been a regular at any dentist, but Dr. Hayashi and the gang have actually made me into their regular customer. I could not be happier with the work that has been done and with their dental practice.

After a long absence of not visiting a dentist and my old dentist passing away I needed to look for a new one. My girl referred me to her dentist and so I checked it out. Yeah he’s in downtown and rent is probably a grip so I expected to pay up the okole. After my first xrays and consultation he said I needed to fill my cavities before it gets worse and needed a root canal. I finally went in and first thing he does that scares the crap out of me is giving me a shot. The great thing was this was the first time I DIDN’T FEEL IT! I though it was a myth but man I was glad he did it. He fixed my teeth and I was out the door. I was pissed that my mouth was numb but its always better than having pain. Next time I’m eating before I see the dentist just in case.

Dr. Hayashi and his staff were amazing! By far the best dentist experience I have ever had. If you need any dental work in Oahu I would recommend him and his team. The personalized care and follow up by Dr. Hayashi himself was unlike anything I have experienced with any other dentist in my life.

I’m actually looking forward to my next cleaning, there’s no bigger compliment than that for a dentist and his office/​staff!!! Livin Aloha!

The entire staff in this office is wonderful. Smart, friendly, helpful, honest… gotta love it! Dr. Hayashi has repaired some really awful work done by other dentists but has not recommended unnecessary procedures. He respected and supported my decision when I opted not to have some periodontal work done.
Jan is the best hygienist I have ever encountered. Thorough without the bullying of others I have been to. She tells you what’s going on and what to watch for.

Dr, Hayashi is expensive, but worth it, especially for the dentist-​phobic. He’s super nice and accommodating, and makes nightmare appointments like wisdom teeth removal seem like a surreal (yet painless) drug-​induced play time. During my last visit, I told him what freaks me out most (feeling like I can’t breathe with all that plastic in my mouth when he’s working on me) and he did everything he could to help me breathe better. Wow, a dentist who is not a sadist! And he sends cool Christmas cards every year wishing a happy holiday from himself, standing in the middle amongst all of his friendly dental assistants.
