Lighting Concepts and Design

This place is really good for your lighting needs. You can order the newest, contemporary LED lights and the wait time is very reasonable at around 2 – 3 weeks. We have done most of our house from lighting concepts and are very happy with the lights we have purchased. The pricing is on par with Amazon, even slightly better in most cases.

Great place if you’re looking for lighting that is «unique» and special !

We’re renovating an old home and will be replacing all the lighting fixtures. We wanted to go with LED lights including recessed lights in the kitchen and foyer. Unfamiliar with recessed lights and LED dimmers, I attempted to do some research online and ask questions at places like Home Depot. Unfortunately, it was still pretty confusing and very difficult to get real help from the big box stores like Home Depot and Lowes. So we decided to look at the lighting specialty stores, expecting to pay several times more for similar products available at Home Depot.
We visited a few stores and saved the one closest to where we lived for last, which was Lighting Concepts and Design. The first few stores were what we expected, high-​end lighting at high-​end prices. Customer service was good but we none of the designs caught our eyes. Lighting C&D also had a big showroom with so many lighting options, it seemed overwhelming at first. Tom Ogawa helped us out and answered our questions and offered to help us with the locations and specs for our recessed lights. He also showed us options on undercabinet lights. He was very knowledgeable on lighting and easy to talk to. Like many shoppers these days, I took pictures with my phone and took note of the model numbers so I could go home and compare their pricing to online stores and amazon.
To my surprise, Tom’s prices were on par or cheaper than the online stores. The undercabinet lights were cheapest online at amazon but Tom’s prices were even lower. I decided to send him my kitchen layout by email and he recommended the locations of the recessed lights and the size and color options they had. He even said to keep the boxes because if we felt the lights were too yellow, we could exchange them for a whiter light. He sends me a quote with the cans and trim for the recessed lights and they were also on par with the online prices so we ordered everything from him. Everything was in stock so there was no wait.
We then decided to look at exterior wall sconces. Since the home is near the ocean, we wanted something that would not corrode quickly. We decided to go with some Hubbardton Forge lights which are on the pricier side. Lighting C&D was again, cheaper than all the online stores I looked at so I placed an order with them. Ordering through Tom meant dealing with a local business and no shipping fee. He even called me to discuss light bulb options when I emailed him some questions on them. I really appreciated that.
The other employees were also very helpful when Tom wasn’t around. Lighting C&D always acknowledged me when I entered the store. I saw some reviews that complained about lack of service but I’m one of those shoppers who likes to look at my own leisure without being followed around or constantly asked if I need help. When I do need help, all I have to do is ask and they are more than happy to.

We’re doing a total renovation to our Kailua home and that means endless lighting decisions. Mike at Lighting Concepts & Design has been tremendous in educating us on our options (cable lighting; monorail, mono point, can) and helping us refine our selections. We ended up purchasing all of our ceiling lighting, cove lighting, fans and sconces there. Prices were competitive, stuff arrived quickly and Mike was consistently helpful and really nice to work with. The difference between using a lighting store with lighting experts and a big box or internet source is night and day!

So first of all… I am an interior designer… and I work with quite a bit of lighting distributors, manufacturers, electricians, and electrical engineers.
I was working with another supplier of lights in Hawaii, name withheld to protect their identity. Needed to purchase a few pendant drop lights for a commercial space that plans to open next month at one of the larger malls.
The previous supplier took over a month to order the lights. So I grew desperate and cut ties with the previous supplier. I called the contractor and he recommended Lighting Concepts.
I worked with them before but maybe it was due to the desperation level of this project or what have you. But they were so wonderful to deal with. Klaire and Tom worked with me for two intensive days and here are the reasons they deserve 5 stars:
1) I got emails and phone calls back within THE HOUR. The other supplier took days and a week to get back to me on questions I had.
2) Tom KNEW his products very well. He was able to send me suggestions to save on shipping cost and shipping time to make that deadline, WHILE still fitting the budget. The other supplier just asked me over and over what I wanted to do, without any suggestions or alternatives.
3) They did not discriminate on the amount I purchased. I originally wanted to buy 6 lights but ended with buying just 2 and they were still very helpful and prompt.
4) They were highly recommended by contractors that I spoke to.
5) They even went out of their way to show me a suggestion on how to create a layout with the lights to hide the extension conduits and junction box. I selected a pendant light fixture that was a bit too short to fit into the existing high ceilings at this mall and required an extension.
I can continue with this wonderful review… but I think you guys get the picture. GO TO LIGHTING CONCEPTS !!!

This was my first visit to Lighting Concepts… I met Linda who seemed very knowledgeable about her fixtures… she appeared to be on the shy side, however very capable.
She showed me several options and provided me with spec sheets…
So far, so good…
So much to look at when doing renovations!

Excellent selection of a lighting store here on Oahu. My husband and I made a visit and spoke with the owner, Tom who was very helpful and filled with knowledge when we were trying to explain what we visioned our lighting in our home to be. He was attentive towards us which was real nice. Who would like to be explaining something to someone and not have the attention of the person you are speaking with. He truly is an expert and also gave us some books to review to get more ideas. The same books he gave us were a «can’t take home book» at the other light store we went to (I am not mentioning name of that place… lol)

Mike helped me pick out the perfect chandelier for my lanai today. Couldn’t ask for a better experience. I wanted better quality, design, and service than Home Depot. I got a heaping helping of all three. Will be back to this store with all my lighting needs.

Lighting Concepts, led by owner Tom Ogawa, is the best lighting store on the island. We have used them for many of our projects and find their knowledge and customer service to be outstanding. If you have a lighting question, this is the place to go.

I guess Tom was out to lunch the 3 times I’ve been here. Perhaps it’s only a good place to go if you are buying commercial lighting for a business, judging on previous comments. Perhaps this is their target market (though w/​the amount of living-​room-​suited table lamps they carry, I didn’t get that impression right away)
I have been here three times since it’s nearby and have been virtually ignored every single time. Last week I ventured in and the lady asked «are you looking for anything in particular?» i said a «clean looking floor lamp for my living room» — and then she said… nothing … and went back to her desk. Didn’t ask about finishes or price range or height or even tell me which part of the store that was in (and they have two floors so it could be upstairs) as I wandered uncertainly. I had a similar experience last time. I get better customer service pointing and clicking on Crate and Barrel or West Elm, which is what I will sadly end up doing. I wanted to patronize a local business, but…
Selection is decent but there are very few specials or sale items. Some funky stuff upstairs like chandeliers and isamu-​noguchi esque lanterns. The way things are organized is also quite cluttered and haphazard-​feeling; with floor lamps and table lamps and sconces seemingly adjacent. The use of space is not ideal.

I will gladly be the first to review Lighting Concepts! I have had nothing but a great experience dealing with Tom and his staff at lighting concepts. Tom has helped me tremendously on the lighting for my salon. Always been patient and answered all the questions I had and the back and forth indecisiveness. Although I was a first time customer and my items were very minimal they treated me as like I was a long time customer. Tom is truly a lighting expert, and I highly recommend you stop by here if you are building or remodeling your home. Tom is the man to see!
