The Spa at the Modern Honolulu

My wife and I went for a couples massage, and requested deep tissue for our session.
Pros:
–Quiet room
–Great aromatherapy
–Decent massages
–They don’t skimp on the time at all
Cons:
–Our massages, at least mine, was not deep tissue (even after requesting more pressure to the masseuse)
–Overpriced, by a lot. I’ve received better $ 60 massages in the past
–My wife went from discomfort in her neck and shoulder the same day to pain the next morning. After leaving a message with the front desk (before the spa opened) asking for a return call, it took the spa manager 2 days to call us. (Sure we should have called again, but we were on our honeymoon, and had better things to do than have to track down a manager). By then we were over it, and didn’t see what the manager could have done to fix the situation at that point.
I know I probably should have called the manager back, but it wouldn’t have made a difference with the discomfort and pain my wife was in, and we weren’t looking for a refund anyway.
I wouldn’t suggest any of their expensive packages. If we could do it again, we wouldn’t have chosen the couples package and would have gone with a basic one.

My experience at Lather Spa was wonderful, and my face still has a healthy glow although the facial was a few days ago.
First off, I received a very warm welcome from Summer at the front desk. Amber, the esthetician who would be giving me my facial, greeted me shortly after. She then gave me a very comfortable robe and slippers to change into. I was given a delicious coconut infused glass of water, and was take to the room for my facial.
The room was pleasant and relaxing. Amber made me feel quite comfortable even though I was a bit self conscious not having gone for a facial in quite a while. The facial itself was so wonderful. I was relaxed the entire time, almost on the verge of falling asleep. Amber was so gentle, and also gave me a nice massage of my head, neck, shoulders, arms and feet.
After the facial, she suggested some products that might work best with my complexion, and after a few days, I’m in love with the products as well.
I’m very happy with the Lather Facial that I received, and will definitely come back for other services. I highly recommend them.

The massage was absolutely amazing and professional and the same tech did my facial, of course they give you a nice robe to wear and rubber slippers and flavored water, they try to up sell practically everything but not a whole bunch of pressure– I paid with spa finder gift cards and the only negative thing I have to say is the girl gave me the impression that I was «putting her out» cause they have to enter these manually– oh boo hoo-​maybe this is normal in spas but they automatically add 20% gratuity AND think they’re getting a tip as well as sell me products? NOT! The creams were very heavy– and high priced– I’ll stick to the main service thank you. Overall I’d say 7.5÷10

Its been too long since I’ve come. Why?! Why!??
My husband wanted to treat me for my birthday and got me a massage here. He knows how much I love spa days and the beat part is we could lounge at the pool afterwards and have lunch.
When we arrived the gal at the front was on the phone assisting another client. Totally fine by me. When she got off and assisted us, she was a little cold, but I guess friendly enough. Got me going and into the ladies room to get ready for my treatment.
My husband did ask her about some other services, such as a pedicure. The pedicure station is nice and relaxing. They currently have a «Martini Mani + Tipsy Toes» special for $ 115: Relax with a hand and feet retreat with a tropical martini, sounds FUN! Although my husband does do pedis he passed on it this time and took a head start to the pool.
I wish I could remember my massage therapist’s name, because she was AMAZING, all I know is that she was a Japanese gal! I cannot remember the last time I even had a great masseuse in a hotel spa, seriously! This gal was great, she felt where I was most tense and she worked it and she gave my shoulders a good stretch! Like I said, AMAZING!
I’m so glad the spa offers a Kamaaina discount, because I’m trying to plan out my next visit.

We did a couple massage 90min for $ 420 plus a 20% service and gratitude which was adjustable. you could choose from three different massages head to toe. i enjoyed my massage but my boyfriend said his was okay. The price was a bit over price for couple masaage. I was suggested just get the regular massage not the couple one

I didn’t get a warm welcoming I looked at the spa services online which I do think are reasnoble and one of the reasons I was excited to call. I told her my mom sent me a gift card and I lived here. She said there was no welcoming discount or local discount at welcoming service but the next visit we will honor. My standards I would like more of a welcoming in price is still reasonable but might as well just offer this from the beginning. Just my opinion. For now I will go to my local spa but maybe one day will change my mind if a better policy comes along :)Other than that the Modern is great in all other hotel services.

Overall experience was great! I got the couples massage and loved the feel of relaxation, soothing, and peacefulness. You have the option of deep tissue massage or lomi lomi massage.
Be mindful that the couples massage room is one floor above and you’re taken into a dim candle lit hotel room with two massage therapists. It’s quite the romantic feel and touch, but it’s worth the 60 minutes of massage. I recommend this spa!

I applaud you for great service and a calming atmosphere. I loved how I felt sooo relaxed and taken care of at the spa. All the staffs were excellent.
Sometimes the spa could be an awkward experience since you are in a bathrobe. Especially when you getting a massage. I haven’t had a massage for almost year. And I totally needed one to help distress and relax. That I got. My body felt good. No more knots. Nice massage.
This would be a great place to have bridal shower too. Spa, dinner, drinks and dancing all at The Modern. Definitely go get a facial or massage at the Spa if you are here.

I had a classic facial done by Jen and it was fantastic. She was able to work on my troubled areas and provided helpful information on how to improve my skin.
The spa has a «modern» contemporary feel to it, and the staff is very friendly and inviting. You are also able to use their showers and they offer a few complimentary items such as shavers or feminine products. You are also able to use the pool and hang out.
The pool staff was very polite and as soon as I laid out I was offered a towel and water. I would definitely go back for another spa treatment.

We were originally going to stay at the Modern Honolulu but ultimately decided on a different hotel. However, it was my birthday weekend so we booked spa treatments at the Modern. If you spend $ 150 on a service, you also get access to their Sunset adults only pool (really a wading pool and not one you can swim in) however this pool overlooks the marina as well as the pool on the lower deck. If you celebrate your birthday here they also provide a bottle of prosecco for your birthday! This was a really nice added touch for sure.
I loved the ambiance of the pool and around 4−5pm they have live music at the bar which is so relaxing while drinking prosecco and feeling the ocean breeze. I appreciated the great service of the spa manager Dana and also the bartender Benjamin at the sunset pool.
We used spa finder gift cards and that was easy as well. A couple of things, this spa does charge tax on the services (i am a frequent spa goer and many spas do not charge tax), although the 20% tip is added, you can adjust it accordingly and they didn’t give us any issues about that.
My biggest gripe probably is for the price, there is no lounge of any sort where you can wait and relax before your service and no amenities. That’s one of my favorite things about going to the spa. The waiting room consists of two chairs for all the spa guests, there is no sauna, steam room, jacuzzi, and no snacks or tea.
A simple way remedy that is to allow guests to enjoy tea by the sunset pool and lounge there before their service. Although you could technically go to the pool before the service it really doesn’t seem cohesive like at many of the other spas (Four seasons, Burke Williams, etc).

This is my second visit to the Spa at the Modern. Yes, the prices for the services are a bit steep, but the massages and facials I’ve gotten have been some of the best! The therapists create a soothing atmosphere and take their time to listen to you. The massage beds are comfortable, allowing you to relax, which to me makes a huge difference in the quality of the experience. I just wish they offered ⁶⁰⁄₉₀ minute massages instead of the ⁵⁰⁄₈₀ minutes for the prices they are charging. I won’t write them off completely, instead I will save my spa days with the Modern as an occasional treat :)

I went to get a deep tissue massage at the spa in The Modern Hotel. Facilities were clean and they had top notch products in the Spa. The most incredible part was the friendliness and attentiveness of the staff. They made me an incredible vitamin enhanced water, showed me the facilities, and the pool services at my disposal. This was all done with a genuine smile on all of their faces. I feel it is hard to get service of this quality these days.
My massage was incredible. It felt like a therapeutic wellness journey. I learned about my problems, stress, detoxification, and there was the perfect amount of communication. I felt like I was in good hands and would definitely recommend to anyone of my friends or colleagues.

Despite a miscommunication regarding appointments for my wedding guests the girls at the Spa were incredibly accommodating to try and fit our planned appointments in. It was a beautiful setting, very comfortable, with enough space for myself and 4 of my friends/​family to either have their treatments at the same time or sit within range to talk and catch up. As I debated between nail polish colours my beautician was patient and my manicure and pedicure was beautiful and long lasting. One of my guests had a massage and she said it was pure bliss! They were also able to squeeze in an eyebrow wax for me at the end which I was very pleased with. It is about a 20 – 25 minute walk from the main Waikiki strip towards Ala Moana however but worth the trip.

My friends gave me a Spafinder gift certificate for my wedding gift, and this spa was on the list.
My massage therapist, Eddie, was amazing. I had the Lomi Lomi massage. Eddie has wonderful energy and a great touch. A very friendly person who puts you at ease.
I would give the Spa at the Modern 4 or 5 stars if not for the reception staff. I love to swim and I inquired about use of the pool before my visit. I was assured that I could use the pool before or after my visit and that towels would be provided.
However, when I went to pay the balance of my bill, I was surprised that the massage was so expensive. $ 169 all together with tax and tip for a 50 minute massage. In addition, I was informed that I could not use the pool because I had not spent $ 150 at their spa. The receptionist asked if someone had not explained this to me before. I had already put on my bathing suit, and I felt humiliated. I had to go back into the dressing room and change into my everyday clothes without a swim.
I will never return to the Spa at the Modern. If Eddie works anywhere else, I would return to him for another massage in a heartbeat.

I was a guest here at the Modern Hotel, was looking forward to the spa treatments for my b-​day trip. I’ve been to many spas around the world, and this is one of my worst experience. The lady at the front desk, Crystal, was very impatient and rude when I wanted to learn about the different treatments. My first treatment was far from what crystal explained. I decided to give them another chance after my bf spoke to them about the issues. However, it was a huge mistake.
The worst part was when Crystal ask me about the gratuity, I told her 15%. However, before we checked out my bf reviewed the final bill and found out that Crystal actually put an higher amount. I really don’t understand how someone like Crystal can be working at a 5 starts hotel spa.

The Spa at The Modern is minimal yet has the core amenities and staff that make this one if my favorite spas.
This is my third visit to The Spa and each time it is amazing.
I hate to give away the best kept secret, but Eddie the BEST masseur I have EVER experienced. Eddie truly makes The spa experience complete. His energy is phenomenal and healing. The massage is simply Magical. I highly recommend his 80 min massage.
On a sunny day, I arrive early to have lunch by the upper adult pool and lounge in the sun.
The Spa validates for Valet, 4 hours.
Afterwards, I enjoy grabbing dinner or drinks and pupus at Morimoto’s. (If I stay longer than 4 hrs I park in the marina area.)
Note: There is no steam room, sauna, nor hot tub, however, there is use of the adult pool and gym.

I highly recommend this Spa if you are looking of quality service and great atmosphere. Kaili gave me an exquisite facial, paying close attention to problem areas and even gave me advice on organic care. Great convo, great massage, great facial! Love her!
I saw Jennifer twice for my nails while in Honolulu! Her gel application is immaculate. Typically, high-​end spas do not offer «designs,» but Jennifer gave me the classiest deep French I have ever seen. Absolutely amazing!
As for the facility, it was relaxing, spotless, and chic. Super large shower room and comfy robes!
Just what I needed during my visit to Hawaii.

I have never felt so let down by my fellow Unilocalers! Don’t let the positive reviews fool you into thinking this is a nice spa facility! It basically is a massage envy but over double the price.
To me, the word SPA means jacuzzi, steam room, drink options, fancy slippers, sitting room and amenities. This place doesn’t have any of those! You can’t even use the lounge chairs at the pool to relax! We arrived early in hopes of using the facilities, but as it turns out this place has none! This is the first «spa» I have been to without hair brushes and razors… The do offer towels for the showers.
I can imagine this could be a decent place to simply get your nails done, but I wouldn’t go back for a spa experience. Maybe the previous reviewers accidentally reviewed the wrong spa?
The worse part? I mentioned before that there are no sitting areas to wait for your service… After changing into my robe I was ushered back out to the foyer sitting area where a wedding party across the hallway could wave to me. Super relaxing!

I purchased a deal from Play Hawaii for the brazillian waxing. It isn’t my first time getting waxed, so I know the routine of how everything goes. I’ve been to a few different places, just to see how things differ. However, this was the BEST waxing experience I’ve had thus far!
My waxer’s name was Christen Santinizio, but she goes by «Z». She was great! I don’t know what she does different, but it was less painful then all of my other waxing experiences. It was also by far the fastest. This place uses hard wax, which is the only type I get now when doing a brazillian. She is a funny too. I learned that she waxes herself, and so she know how it feels to be waxed by her, so she thinks it has made her a better waxer. That sounds plausible to me, and the results show!
I would love to go here and to Z for all of my waxes for years to come, but I just don’t know if I can afford it. I heard they have a kama’aina rate that I’ll have to ask about, since it is pricier than other waxing places, but it was SOO much better. The place is immaculate, very posh spa like. The staff is friendly, and I just loved it there. Sigh, hope my pocketbook allows me to come back.
