History

Established in 2009.

Uptown Gracie Jiu Jitsu was opened in 2009 as a town location for then affiliated school Gracie Kaneohe. It was operated by Relson Gracie black belt, Jeff Furuta who later acquired ownership of the school in 2011. Uptown GJJ has classes for both adults and children for both sport and self defense. Uptown GJJ emphasis has always been on safety, cleanliness and a nurtuting hands-​on instructional style.

Jeff is hands down one of the best instructors out there. His knowledge and teaching style is up there with the best of them. And the kids program is top notch coach Kyle runs a great program.

The best and only place to be on a Tuesday or Thursday night. Jeff is a great instructor– knowledgable, patient, and kind to his students (of all ages). If you want to train at a place where the emphasis is placed on technique, where growth and the curiosity to learn is cultivated & nurtured, this is the place! My teammates have become like a second family, I wouldn’t trade the experience for the world.

This trip back home found me spending a lot of time at my parents house in Nuuanu. And with that, comes a lot of eating home cooked, over-​the-​top, rich food. How lucky is it that Uptown Gracie Jiu Jitsu is just a neighbor to their place?
This school is one of the best kept secrets for those interested in studying Gracie (Brazilian) Jiu Jitsu on the island. Relson Gracie black belt, Jeff Furuta, is an incredible technician, competitor and instructor and has one of the most detail oriented teaching styles. He is very hands-​on and will personally instruct most of his classes.
The facility itself is well ventilated and cool. They keep the mats clean and the students are all wonderful. No aggro-​types prowling around here. It’s also very easy to locate being just a few minutes up the Pali Hwy and only about 20mins out of Waikiki.
I will never miss an opportunity to get a few rolls here when I’m back on the island!
