History
Established in 2000.
Project Native was founded in the fall of 2000 by 19-year-old Raina Weber under the auspices of the Railroad Street Youth Project. From the outset, Project Native was a grassroots community initiative, nurtured and guided by environmental professionals. Ms. Weber and a team of youth volunteers began collecting seeds of locally native species and propagating them on a small plot of leased land. In 2004 Project Native was granted 501©3 non-profit status and purchased a run-down, historic farm of 54-acres in Housatonic.
Today the native nursery grows over 224 different species of local native plants. More than 100 of these species are grown and preserved in seed banks throughout the farm. We seek to inspire a love of nature that motivates people to create, restore & maintain healthy landscapes.
To accomplish our mission we grow and sell native plants, maintain a wildlife sanctuary, produce experiential education programs for all ages, and manage a seasonal native butterfly house.
