Abc School of Music

When my daughter decided that she wanted to play viola, we bought her one and then started looking for a good teacher. We found ABC School of Music on Greenhouse and decided to give her private lessons a try.
Being young, my daughter is rather impatient and really wanted to make sounds with her instrument. They didn’t have to be wonderful sounds, just playing sounded like a lot of fun to her. However, in the two months she was in private lessons, she was hardly allowed to pull her bow across the strings as the instructor spent the majority of time working on mechanics. It bored my daughter to tears.
While my daughter wanted to put some sounds together and hear a note, the instructor was more worried about the way she was holding the bow. Now, I fully understand that this is an important part of learning to play but it becomes terribly dull and draining for a young child. She quickly lost interest and wouldn’t even pick up her viola at home because she was so discouraged that she couldn’t hold the bow to her instructor’s satisfaction.
It didn’t take long before she was frustrated with the same lesson over and over and began to hate her viola. Sadly, it still sits in a case at home — unused and a huge waste of money.
I had hoped the school would be able to provide musical education in a fun way but this just became a chore and was quickly pushed by the wayside as it was just another class for her. Kids want to learn in a fun way, not be drilled on the details over and over.
I still hope she’ll pick up that viola again and give it another try. But, right now, she still sees it as another piece of school to add to her workload and she’s disappointed that she ever even tried in the first place. Perhaps one day ABC School of Music will learn how to fuse the technical details with a dash of fun and make learning a joy.
