Alliance For Multicultural Community Services

This nondescript office building provides basic medical and social services for the many different refugees arriving in Houston. Each floor has several suites dedicated to helping people from different regions.
Today I helped medical students and faculty from BCM & UTH attend to refugees of all ages (toddlers to senior citizens) from Burma, Somalia, Cuba, Nepal, Bhutan, Pakistan, Afghanistan and Thailand. This center has several dedicated translators to overcome the significant language barriers (Arabic, Urdu, Pashto, Hindi, Nepalese, Spanish, Burmese, Laotian, and Thai amongst others). I was happy to help patients streaming into my hometown while working with enthusiastic doctors in training.
This center also has dedicated medical, dental and counseling services available to refugees. It is a welcoming, professional place designed to ease their transition into our society, staffed with diverse diligent volunteers and employees. They can help refugees sign up for social and health care services.
