Baba Yega Cafe

My husband and I tried Baba Yega for the first time last week! We were very impressed with the food! We had the grilled Artichoke which was AMAZING. My husband enjoyed a burger and I tried their pasta with the red sauce. All of the food was fantastic. Service was great. I only gave 4 stars as we sat on the patio and when we were seated our table was covered in leaves and dirt from the tree. It looked like it hadn’t been cleaned that day. Otherwise, we would definitely recommend this place!

Food taste and quality is usually 4 stars.
I have always loved their Reuben sandwich. The marbled rye bread is fantastic! The caprese salad we had on the last visit was odd. VERY thick sliced tomatoes and the basil leaves were just laying in the olive oil. It lacked much in presentation but tasted good.
Menu selection is 3 stars.
Lots of sammies and salads and not much more.
Parking is 3 stars
Especially on the weekend it can get crazy as the gay bars across the street take up most of the street parking.

Because they never can get a drink out in any decent amount of time. This time I was halfway done with my entrée before my drink came.
They are a lovely space down in the midst of the Montrose. Tables aren’t too close together and the noise level is pleasant. Their little courtyard outback is a nice respite. Brunch on the deck is a must for any Houstonian at least once. Saturday the brunch buffet is $ 15 and Sunday it shoots to $ 25. Choose from: Omelet Station/​Waffle Bar, Blueberry French Toast, Eggs Florentine/​Eggs Benedict, Bacon, Sausage & Smoked Honey Ham, Rosemary New Potatoes, Roasted Sweet Potatoes, Grilled fish of the day, Grilled Chicken, Roasted Chicken, Beef Brisket, Vegetables, Herbed Rice, Lox, Cream Cheese & Bagels, Vegetable Frittata, Fruit Blintzes, Salads & Fresh Fruit, Breads & Desserts
$ 5 minomsas — each. They are not bottomless. And they used to have a very nice private room you could reserve.
The food here is always tasty. I have never had a bad meal. And really the prices are very competitive. We have been coming here 20+ years. Hope they stick around a long time. It’s a nice place to eat in the area away from the bustle of Montrose and Westheimer.

This place just keeps growing and growing. We have been coming here for years and the food is ALWAYS good. The potato salad is some of the best I have ever had in my life. I have never had the buffet for brunch I always order off the menu. I had pasta Puttanesca and rustic tomato soup. Both were delicious. The burgers are also huge and delicious. this has always been one of my favorite brunch spots when I come to Houston.

Came for Father’s Day Brunch and there was a small hiccup with the seating, but the manager Ronald was on it and had it taken care of and we were seated outside. The breeze made it nice and cool. Henceforth, the beginning of the food fest. The fresh fruit was so delectable and sweet. The Bloody Mary’s was mixed perfectly. Just it had more garnishments.
The other half of the party partook in a pitcher of Mimosas. The champagne definitely was present. Overall, great experience and wonderful Father’s Day for my hubby. The only sour part is, we tried to make reservations earlier in the week (7 in our party), but was told we the only times available was at 9:00 or 9:30 am.

We went with another couple for dinner. Everything tasted fresh. I was going carb free and had no problem getting full on my grilled artichokes and chickpea lettuce salad. My husband wasn’t in love with his burger. Their vegetarian meatloaf seemed to have too much star anise. Besides that, I would come back to try their brunch.

This is the second time eating here. The first was with a group at lunch a few weeks ago. I enjoyed it enough to bring my family for dinner. Started with the chips and guac. The chips and guac is very good. The trout is also very good. I ordered the tuna. It is described as cooked medium rare, as tuna should be. They need to take this off the menu. It was over cooked and therefore dry. Since it was already ruined, I was dipping it in daughters horseradish sauce for moisture. We also had the kummelweck sandwich. The bun and potato salad saves this meal. Roast beef on a sandwich is always served rare (!) not the overcooked flavorless meat on this item. The servers were very attentive and friendly.

This place is a long-​lived, classic brunch spot for a reason. It’s truly one of the best brunches in town. The brisket and always-​fresh mango are my favorites but their ready-​made waffles, omelets, and amazing selection of «desserts» are crowd favorites too. The mimosas are served outside while you wait so you can’t even complain about the line!

Best restaurant in Houston! Exceptional service, food quality and food presentation! The quaint ambiance is echoed by the family friendly southern hospitality. The artfully crafted cocktails are a steal during happy hour, as are the exquisite vegetarian plates on Thursdays. The all inclusive menu will satisfy diverse palettes, vegetarians, vegans and carnivores alike! Dine on the patio for a tropical escape, with a kid friendly coy pond and tropical birds!

Yes! This is a great place for brunch. Food options are fresh and plentiful, service is top-​notch, and the charming atmosphere of this very unassuming property make this a place I will definitely return to soon, The omelette station has long lines but they do move pretty quickly because they have the ability to make at least 4 at a time. The dessert selection was the weakest offering but the chocolate dipped strawberries looked yummy! The only draw-​back is the unorganized valet parking. Although this is usually the more convenient option, here, it may be better to self-​park if you want to leave soon after dining on the weekend.

This is clearly a place the locals love.
It’s got an old-​timey vibe. It’s built inside of an actual house that’s been converted into a restaurant.
I was brought here for the brunch. And AYCE affair with roast beef, custom made to order omelettes, and endless waffles, pancakes, and eggs.
But that’s not all!
Try some eggs benedict, hash browns, gravy, sausage, bacon, yogurt, fruit, oatmeal, french toast, bread pudding, and the list goes on. If you could imagine having it at breakfast, it’s probably here.
The service was prompt, though the wait times can be long.
The bloody mary was awful, so skip that.
All the food quality was good and I ate more than I needed to.
The servers were polite and the custom omelettes were great and made right in front of you by a pair of ladies you clearly know what they are doing.
It’s a bit of a drive if you don’t live in the area, but fun for a mid-​Sunday option.

Took Mother n law for Brunch onmothers day. Heard alot of good things about the place. Food for brunch was average. Omelets are the best thing going for me.

Got the burger. It was lovely and juicy. Cooked to medium via the menus description. Grilled onions and brioche bun were wonderful.
Beer of the month happened to be one of my favorites «No Label strawberry blonde ale»
Sever was a little pushy at first because the restaurant was pretty empty at 930 on a Saturday. With having a full bar I figured they would be open past 10.
Music choices didn’t match the atmosphere at all. Not sure which demographic they’re trying to please with the combination of an older rustic restaurant with outdoor gardens (beautiful!) and 2010 billboard 100 music.

We came here for lunch on a Sunday. The wait was about 15 minutes. They had a little mimosa bar set up outside for people waiting in line! I got mango mimosa and it was pretty good! I don’t have the enzymes to break down alcohol, so I turned pretty red even after few sips ;)
I ordered the shrimp and avocado salad. It was very fresh and I liked the interesting dressing they had with it — I think it was olive oil with dried tomatoes. They gave very generous portions of shrimp and avocado! My sister and husband both got the burger and they both really enjoyed it. The meat itself was so juicy and flavorful! My husband substituted the side for gumbo for $ 1 extra. It was filled sausage and other ingredients and it was’t too salty.
They also have a cute little courtyard that you must check out. There were many different types of flowers growing around the pond!
The only reason I’m giving 3 stars instead of 4 is that the service was pretty bad. My husband ordered his burger without cheese, but it came with cheese, so he had to wait extra long for his food to come back. Our waiter wasn’t around much, so we had to wave to another waiter far away to get some ketchup and hot sauce. Once we asked for our check, the waiter took another 10 – 15 min to bring the check. Then once he took out credit card, we waited another 10 – 15 min for him to bring it back… :(

Love! This place is super cute! It’s so full of nature and the seating accommodations are endless. Front patio, back patio, bar seating, inside seats with views, etc… You name it, they have it. It’s definitely bigger than it appears. I’m almost embarrassed to say but I’ve heard about this place for a few years now and I hate it took me this long to visit.
One early Saturday morning/​afternoon, I decided to treat my mom and kids to the breakfast buffet and man, this place did not disappoint. Vast choices of fruit, breads, vegan & gluten free selections, and traditional breakfast items. We all fell in love with the omelet station. Yes lawd! You can most def have it your way around this camp.
We also fell in love with the pond and watching the caged birds. But be careful, that parrot is mean as heck!

I came with two girlfriends on a Sunday night before heading to the House of Blues for a concert. One of my friends is trying out the vegan diet, so we were looking for a place that would accommodate her dietary restrictions and Baba Yega was a great choice!
I had no idea that they’ve been an institution in Houston for so long and I can see why! Located in the heart of Montrose, Baba Yega is in an adorable house with an amazing garden in the back! They have their own parking lot, which is great, considering it’s in the middle of a neighborhood.
I ordered the shrimp and avocado salad and a mango mimosa. The salad was great! The shrimp were perfectly cooked, seasoned, and had a nice char. The salad also came with a TON of shrimp — at least 8 – 10. I love shrimp and I had a hard time finishing them all! Luckily they were so good, that I just kept on going. The only downside was that I couldn’t tell if there was dressing on the salad or not. I have a feeling it was forgotten, but my friend had ordered her dressing on the side and shared with me. Otherwise, for $ 13 and change, this was a nice, light meal. The mango mimosa was delicious without being overly sweet.
Overall, a good casual neighborhood dining experience! I’ll definitely be back to try some other items I was eyeing on the menu!

Sunday brunch is amazing. Great atmosphere and food. The wait is a bit long but well worth it.

it’s a cute restaurant — we sat in the back garden/​patio area which is nice, and filled with «wild» animals. There was a parrot in the bird cage, which was taken away by a lady during our dinner, and lots of cats running around. It didn’t feel like we were in the middle of a city. I love these little quirky details about restaurants.
Food was also excellent. I have a feeling I’ll be back.

If you’re vegetarian/​vegan or like fish they have a lot of choices for you. I got the ceviche appetizer with friends which I wouldn’t get again since it was just okay. The baby green salad with shrimp was good and hardy and came with a yummy spicy dressing. My friends got the tuna steak and the shrimp pasta. The food was fine but not sure if I would visit again. However if you are vegan/​gluten free etc I’m sure you’d like the choices

This review update is because I have had a chance to sample their non-​buffet dinner fare. Honestly my experience for the non-​buffet was a 1 or 2 star experience, so the final mixed rating for Baba Yega is generously 3 stars.
Came here for a date, the day before Valentine’s, and it actually wasn’t too terribly crowded — maybe half full. We were seated quickly. Then things… fell apart. We were left alone for a solid half hour, no water no attention whatsoever, which was fine because we were chatting and having a great conversation. I finally flagged someone down because my throat was so dry from no water. The waiter I’d flagged down wasn’t even supposed to serve our section, and this resulted in a mess of confusion with him and our actual waiter each stopping by to interrupt us every 3 minutes to ask if the other person was going to be our waiter — we kept telling them to talk to each other and get back to us but apparently that didn’t happen for a while.
Then things got weird. For whatever reason, my things would come out easily 10 minutes before my date’s did. This applied for drinks — I got my iced tea instantly, his wine came out 10 minutes later. This applied for food — I got my portabella burger quickly, then sat and let it get cold for 10 minutes until finally my date convinced me that it wouldn’t be rude to start. During these 10 minutes our waiter walked by multiple times and apparently didn’t think it odd that I was sitting there with a full plate of food and he had nothing. I was eating the last bite of my burger when his meatloaf finally showed, I kid you not. Dessert was the same way — my plate came out and I sat and tried not to drool while we waited… and waited… then finally ended up splitting my dessert, which we finished, and THEN his showed up.
The portabella burger was okay. Nothing to write home about, but as someone who’s newly vegetarian it scratched my burger itch. He let me try a bite of his vegan meatloaf and while it’s not going to convince anyone who has eaten meat that it’s «meat“loaf, it’s good on its own. Basically just a black bean burger in meatloaf form.
Once we finished eating I think the waiter was trying to make up for poor service at the start so he’d come by to interrupt us probably every 5 minutes. Normally this is fine but when you’re on a date this just gets annoying to have to restart the conversation when we clearly had full drinks and didn’t need anything at all.
All in all, I definitely won’t be back to Baba Yega for dinner ever again. I still enjoyed the buffet and will probably try that again.

Wonderful place for Saturday or Sunday brunch. They have an all you can eat buffet that has so many great selections and an omelet which I absolutely love. My only request is that could order this by itself b/​c it’s way too much food! They have lots of fresh fruit and healthy options too.
The restaurant has lots of personality located in the heart of Montrose. It offered a fun relaxed environment perfect for any size parties.

Great service and great servers. Food was good, the only thing that didn’t sit well with me was the sausage patties and links were kind of bland and without flavor. But other than that great place.

Very family-​friendly location — lots of space for strollers/​car seats, an easy menu, and room in the bathroom to change your baby. The food is pretty good (I got the burger loaded with cheese, mushrooms and a hefty portion of avocado and a side of sweet potato fries). Service is pretty mediocre. There’s a big parking lot and nearby street parking. The menu could be a little more varied, but it’s a crowd pleaser.

This is probably the sixth time I’ve been to Baba Yega and I was a tad disappointed on this visit. We went for dinner early on a Friday night and the place was not full at all. Still we waited for our waiter, Ronald and waited even longer for our food. When it did come out he had the wrong order. Somehow he had it in his head I’d ordered chicken wraps when I had ordered the shrimp avocado salad. So we waited a bit longer. When we got the check, the chicken wraps were still on there and even though they were less expensive, we wanted to pay for what we ate, so again another wait. Ronald was apologetic and the food WAS worth the wait. Let me be clear I’ve never been disappointed in the quality of the food.
The shrimp avocado salad had plenty of greens, broiled shrimp, grapefruit, peaches and avocado. It was awesome. Husband had the roast beef sandwich Kraftenwerk or something like that and he scarfed that down. It was like a French dip but on a round Kaiser roll. The French fries must have been great, I never got to taste one!
So great food, but slow service last Friday night. I LOVE the brunch!

Easy parking which is awesome for this area. Friendly staff and a good menu selection. Love their vegetation meat loaf! …and I’m no vegetarian. It has to be the ambiance and service or maybe it’s just the buzz that keeps me coming back. I find their dishes to be hit or miss but the service is always on point.

My review from 2011 looked like she needed a healthy update out of passed time, if not also from repeat visits over the years. I will republish my hilarious thoughts on the café’s name from my original review though: Baba Yega just sounds like a disease so that probably doesn’t help in your informal PR campaign to have lunch here with your business guy friends — «I would go out for lunch but my Baba Yega is really actin’ up again and I can tell cold weather is on its way, better pick up some Nyquil» or something like that. FWIW, Baba Yega is actually a Slavic witch. Which is conveniently also what I call the ex wife.
This is a neighborhood joint we have been coming to forever. So, just like the 1308 El Tiempo, it is painfully obvious from one visit to the next how the prices have jumped. Especially when a group of men in their 30s are discussing the economy’s shambles relative to a price sensitivity on lunch entrees.
Considering how busy and locally legendary both the 1308 and the Baba Yega are, the not so subtle price increases tend to feel like a simple cash grab since they are not hurting for business. Yet the prices keep climbing steadily north like the little mountaineer on the mountain that could: one of the best salads in the city found in the shrimp & avocado is now up to a $ 13 lunch for a salad. So you need to not just like salad a bit but hella-​like salad to pay $ 13 for one at lunch. I do not hella-​like salad that much so it was time to explore some of the more cost effective lunch options. Because for a dollar more I could get a hooker out by the airport, and I would always prefer Thai over a salad if you catch my drift.
The chicken & sausage gumbo is considered one of the more popular dishes by my offline friends and business guys in the community; but when searching Unilocal reviews it is only mentioned in ten of the 561 posted reviews at the time of writing. The cup is $ 4.50 and the bowl is $ 7.50. At these prices for a business guy lunch we would literally be losing money by not filling up our bathtubs with gumbo and splashing around in it.
If you get the bowl of gumbo it is a big bowl of fabulous. They use thin, plasticy bowls so there isn’t negative «bowl space» that takes away from gumbo occupied space like some soup places, so you get a big serving. The thin plastic surprisingly retains the heat of the gumbo well so your gumbo remains dang hot for a while after it is delivered, and remains warmly hot throughout the meal. Also sensibly they take it easy on the rice so the gumbo shows off the chicken, sausage, and the okra more than other local variations on gumbo.
The service is always consistent and consistently upscale for a neighborhood joint. Especially in a heavily recently-​gentrified neighborhood like this where pretentiousness and full blown classism at the chain newcomer Uchi, among others, just around the corner are not exactly in keeping with the historical neighborhood traditions of a creative class enclave, best exemplified by the stage and/​or film version of RENT where rich people (Benjamin Coffin III) were not warmly welcomed to the party.
However, my old Slavic witch (the restaurant, not my ex wife) takes a real chill pill on pretension and instead they just focus on good food and providing exciting and flavorful options for the vegan and vegetarian alternative lifestyles, and providing just as many exciting and flavorful options for their supportive allies that want to dine with them but eat meat-​related things such as chicken & sausage gumbo.
Baba Yega unflinchingly reminds me of Debbie Novotny’s East Coast style diner in the American version of the television program Queer As Folk. Even though there is no sassy middle aged redhead with a PFLAG pin on her vest’s flair lapel snapping her bubblegum and calling people «Sunshine.»
But even without an equivalent version of Deb here, the joint still feels like a sensible second home when you are in need of a casual atmosphere, good food, and good service. My favorite thing is that they have dedicated water-​refillers so you are not waiting on an overworked server to notice; the water guy has got you covered fam.
This Slavic witch is alright. Don’t go to a party held by Sam & Dean Winchester.

Came again during dinner to try other menu options with the hubby. He got the steak night that came with a baked potato and grilled veggies for $ 14 and I got the rainbow halibut without the rice but more veggies and chefs sauce on the side.
When the server brought out the medium rare steak, she also brought out came steak sauce and you know whenever sauce comes out, that’s never a good sign of a flavorful meat. The steak was generous in portion size however was lacking in seasoning.
All beers are $ 3 and do not come in tap. It’s bottled or canned.
The rainbow trout was excellent. Very flavorful even without the chefs sauce. The veggies were quite lacking especially since I requested for double veggies, it seemed like I only got one serving.
Overall we continue to come and dine here. We just won’t do steak night here ever again. There’s better places to go to for steak night.

3.5 stars for Baba Yega tucked into the quiet streets of Montrose.
It was not packed at 10 am for Sunday brunch which was great … Except they wouldn’t let us sit without the couple joining us. I can understand this for dinner reservations type place… But for brunch when there’s no wait? I could have been at the table sitting and getting drinks/​coffee and spending $$. Annoying because there is also nowhere to sit up front.
I thought the Buffett was about 5 $ overpriced @ 25 $. I’m thrown off why Sunday Buffett is about 10 $ more expensive then Saturday’s?
Pros: omelette station (but was lacking onions)
Fresh cut fruit, fresh made waffles, crispy bacon. Love that the restaurant is built into a charming little house.
Cons: sweet potatoes were meh, was not blown away by the desserts and it irks me when a waiter comes by to take your signed check when you’re still sitting there instead of worrying about clearing your table & getting refills.
I will be back for the 3 – 7 weekdays and 3 – 8 Friday happy hours because –YAY– a place that doesn’t skimp on the happy hour length.
I’ll definitely give Baba Yega a chance for something else and update accordingly.

I was referred here by a fellow Unilocaler and I am so glad he did. We decided to head here after church. I wanted to surprise my wife with a new venue.
We arrived in time to beat the rush and were seated immediately. After receiving the menu we asked about the brunch and were told its not exactly a brunch but a buffet. I went to check it out and after seeing all they had to offer I told my wife that’s why we are here!
We ordered a pitcher of the orange mimosas and two buffets. The buffet had numerous options. I had to try some of everything and ended up with 2 plates! One of my favorite stations was the made to order omelets. There was fruits, lox and cream cheese, brisket, chicken, tilapia, eggs Florentine, Belgian waffles, bananas foster, bread pudding etc. you get the idea and I left out a whole lot more. They kept the stations replenished and they did not run out of anything while I was there.
If you have not been there, you must bookmark this place and go! I will become a repeat visitor and even though its a drive from Katy.

Baba Yega is a burger-​salad-​American-​comfort-​food-​kitchen-​sink restaurant in the heart of Montrose that offers a brunch buffet and has a significant vegetarian section of the menu offering vegetarian comfort food. This is something I find often in Houston — places that look like houses that are actually sprawling restaurants, combining properties and outdoor seating for a single, homey, patchwork dining experience.
I went with my roommate for lunch on a Sunday afternoon. We were told that it would take 40 minutes to get a table, but it took less than 20. A server offering $ 4 mimosas was walking around outside, keeping patrons happy.
Once seated inside, I ordered the «hippie meatloaf.» It came with sauteed spinach and mash potatoes, complete with gravy on the potatoes and meatloaf. The meatloaf itself was made from quinoa and other ingredients. I guess I don’t really know what goes into regular meatloaf, but the hippie meatloaf was savory and flavorful. The gravy was a bit too salty for my taste, but definitely added to the potatoes and meatloaf. The spinach was good, and gave me hope for all future sides of sauteed spinach. For $ 15, it was nice to have a comfort food experience, but I wasn’t really blown away by anything. I can see why this place earns Unilocal’s «vegetarians go nuts for this place» badge, but I’m not sure the breadth makes up for the quality. I’ll have to come back and try one of the veggie burgers.
For what it’s worth, my roommate did not like his salmon burger (salmon, blended with peppers, spices, etc.). It did look quite plain, and the accompanying side salad looked a bit sad, though he said the ingredients were quite nice.
One thing that struck me was how diverse the restaurant was — employees and patrons. In the course of thirty minutes, I saw a gay couple, a lesbian couple, a few Asians, multiple generations of black families, the white church crowd, and more. It was amazing. There was even an Aston Martin with squeaky breaks parked out front. It made me happy to live in Houston, and briefly hopeful for the world.

Arrived here with my homie and the wait was super minimal considering the time. Unfortunately they did seat us in the smaller section with back to back tables and it ended up being too many fluffies in one row but we made it work. Mental note for next time… the bonies never think about this when seating.
We went full force on the buffet and I had more than my fair share of cream cheese and lox, fruit, waffles (that cinnamon butter with walnut is awesome), visited the omelet station, the aforementioned bacon, chocolate covered strawberries, fish, chicken (I personally didn’t eat any but it looked pretty good)…and did I mention all that BACON I inhaled! Lol I ate my weight in bacon and *rubs tummy* clearly that ain’t no easy feat!
I’m getting hungry just thinking about this good food. I normally don’t do buffets since I leave stuffed worse than a Thanksgiving bird but whew Lawd, Baba Yega and Tish Peezy… me and you us never part, makidada!

Baba Yega was a good place for a group dinner. The atmosphere was relaxed and homey. The menu offered plenty of vegetarian, vegan, and gluten-​free options as well as plenty of options with meat, dairy, and gluten.
I ordered a ½lb burger with sauteed mushrooms ($ 12). The burger itself was okay. The fries that came with it were delicious.
I don’t often order dessert, but the presence of pumpkin cheesecake ($ 7) on the menu called for an exception. Its smooth filling and crumbly crust did not disappoint.
Even though we were seated indoors, mosquitoes feasted on my legs. That diminished my enjoyment of the meal a bit. Prepare yourself with insect repellent.

Why (not): This is my vegetarian review. I really want to like Baba Yega’s. The venue is darling, and I love that they have many vegan and vegetarian options on the menu. It’s just that when you go out to eat, you want to enjoy your meal and feel full. The Portabella burger felt thin, and despite its nice presentation, we really did not like the taste of the fake turkey club. My boyfriend is a fan of the veggie meatloaf, but I will probably pass next time.

Better impression the second time around. The first time I came here, our waiter was rude and the food was okay. First time, I ordered their Vegan Club and I wasn’t impressed. Honestly, I didn’t see myself coming back here, but all of their good Unilocaling reviews brought me back :)
Second time around, I ordered their Vegan Meatloaf and it was really good! Service wasn’t great, but it was a lot better. Mango mimosas were a nice touch. My wife really liked their Vegan Reuben too.
That have a separate vegan menu, which is why I’ll be back! Hopefully, the service will be a little bit better, but overall, I was far more pleased this time around.
