History

Established in 1993.

Berryhill is a highly acclaimed, Houston-​based restaurant chain that features unique, baja-​style cuisine. Since 1928, Berryhill’s tamales have been a Houston tradition. It all started with one man, a bicycle and a recipe. Those who like to wax nostalgic about the good old days will remember the tempting taste of Walter Berryhill’s homemade tamales, which he sold from a pushcart along the street corners of the posh River Oaks area of Houston. Much to the sorrow of those who loved the man and his tamales, when Walter Berryhill retired in the 1960’s, he took his cart, tortilla press, and the coveted recipe and quietly went home.

The famous recipe and the little tamale cart sat in a warehouse until 1993, when the first Berryhill restaurant was born: a little taqueria, lovingly named Berryhill.

I have been to this Berryhill location several times in the past. Their service is always mediocre at best. Tonight my boyfriend and i decided to stop in, we saw a discount code on Unilocal for 50% percent off our meal with a military id. We thought, awesome, they support our military with a great discount. We ordered, showed the coupon and the cashier said he had to go get his manager. We waited a while and he finally came back and told us that his manager said they do not accept that here. I asked «why? It shows Berryhill heights.» He responded, I don’t know, just because we don’t. If your restaurant does not offer a discount shown on any social media, please have it removed from the site. More importantly, DO NOT advertise a discount to military personnel if you do not honor the code. So disgusting. Will never return to this location. I advise others to not even think their discounts will be honored because the manager may just not feel like it that night. AVOID.

Came here for the first time and it’s an average place. We ordered two chicken fajitas, 2 sodas, and a side of queso. The bill? $ 40! The portions we got combined are what other places give for 1! Def pricey and quantity is not that great. The food was decent. I did enjoy the food.
Berryhill is a place I’d go if I was invited (I was). Other than that it’s a fairly average restaurant.

I love Berryhill fish tacos so, so much. Just as the other Berryhill locations, the Heights location has a chips and salsa bar (very nice to be able to just grab it yourself) and pretty reasonably priced margs and beers. There is plenty of indoor space at this location and some outdoor seating, but the atmosphere is definitely a lot nicer inside. They’re pretty chill about large groups, which is nice.

By far the worse of all the berryhill’s first no cream salsa, 2nd the service here is pretty drab, and finally the food in general seems way off from the norm I get from the other locations. I would drive to either buffalo speedway or the galleria location for a better example of whats missing here.

The best Oyster tacos around! The atmosphere and food are good, but when they have their seasonal Oyster tacos I visit this place frequently. The margaritas and cool environment make it a nice casual place to dine.

At first coming in I was very disappointed with the service. The girl at the register felt like she didn’t even know about the resturant and what kind of special they had. I mean if you don’t know you don’t know don’t try to explain. The server was also having a bad day too. I feel if your having that bad of a day an it is not gonna get better don’t come to work. I asked politely for salsa and got a quick answer of we don’t have it. When he was done I said the cilantro salsa he changed his tune. Only because the guy next to us asked for it.
I love to eat at berry hill but I am sticking to the one in the champions area. They can get all for stars from me! (sorry champions berryhill I will never change locations. I will see you this Sunday for brunch)

Their prices have gone up in recent years and their quality still falls short of real Tex Mex, but the place is still fun and their a la carte options are still decent. It’s best during Lent with their discounted fish tacos, or on Thursdays with their discount tamales.

Not too much to say about Berryhill. It’s the type of place I’d say is worth dropping by, just don’t expect the highest quality of food. The fish tacos are surprisingly good and live up to the hype. Everything else, not so much. It kind of reminds me of Moe’s Southwest Grill. The chips and salsa are good. That’s really all that there is to say.
I’d say it’s worth trying, but for me personally, once was enough. I don’t plan on going back. The food’s quality is alright and not overly expensive for what you’re getting.

Not a fan of parking. They share it with other places nearby. Not easy, but not impossible.

This place stopped caring. Used to be decent, now just bad. Paid $ 21 for lunch for two fish tacos, rice and beans, and chili con queso (ordered and paid for large, recevied small).
Fish tacos (original) were mostly just breading rather than fish and the bulk of the tacos were more red cabbage than anything. Maybe a tablespoon of fish (if you can measure fish in that manner) per taco. They were also drenched with sooo much sauce, that you could not pick up the taco without it disintegrating. Rice was cold and bland, charro beans were just as cold and not appetizing at all. Queso was delivered after food and had resolidified. I would have been upset to have spent $ 2 on this from a taco truck in a bad neighborhood in a border town. I would value it at around $ 0.20.
The place was busy with lots of entitled Heights douchebags with screaming, unsupervised children. (Not the restaurant’s fault — I just hate every awful parent in the Heights who treats their children like an unwanted free-​range pet.)
No need to return. I expect they will be clearing out soon. Sadly, the children will stay.

Very satisfying food, and nice atmosphere. Reasonably priced, and the fish tacos are outstanding.
This is a nice place to come to for a filling meal. No tableside service, but rather you order at the counter and they bring it to you at your table. Not as tasty as Torchy’s but much more affordable.

It’s a nice local spot. Great tex-​mex and the Ritas are. Happy hour ALL day Saturday and it’s ladies night every Thursday. Theyre famous for their fish tacos so if you’re in the area stop by and try them out.

This restaurant is consistent and I have eaten there a half dozen times. Orders are taken at the counter and a number assigned. The only minor thing I dislike is the register girl passing the ticket to me for a tip when I get no table service, but I will not downgrade them for this since the food is so good. Regardless, great foods awaits you.
I go there for the $ 4.00 Happy Hour margaritas, they are always good and consistent. Chips are on a warming tray and you spoon out your salsa. I always get the large appetizer deal, which easily serves two hungry people. Fish tacos are tasty. I would eat here before the El Cantina on any day due to the El’s poor service.
Every time the food is good, very reasonable, and I recommend the restaurant.

This place was pretty disappointing. I will not be going back.
I’m a big fan of Mexican food and rarely leave my dish unfinished. Unfortunately, I left most of my food. I had chicken tacos; how can you get this wrong?
Staff
Even more annoyingly, the staff are not very professional. The bar tender dropped a few flirty comments to my girlfriend which were inappropriate. They seemed to care more about topping my gf and her friend up with drinks than anything else.
Décor
The place is pretty nice with a nice outdoor area and water feature. This is the only saving grace of the place.

One extremely long and tasteless HAIR in my breakfast taco.
Running late to work. Picked up an order of breakfast tacos to go. On my first bite I was met with a long hair that spread the entire length of my taco, intertwined with egg and chorizo. Trash.

I really like this location as its pretty laid back and not too hard to park. Bar staff is very friendly and engaging. I often go for breakfast and get the special of eggs, black beans, mangos, and pico on tortilla strips. Light, but filling and excellent!!! Breakfast tacos are pretty filling.
Still love their fish tacos as well… I switch between the grilled and fried as both are tasty.

A better than average quick-​serve Mexican restaurant with a stand-​out San Diego style fried fish taco. Better yet, it’s extremely, almost overly, kid friendly (a factor for us now, though it used to be a minus when we were young ‘n free) and pleasantly priced for the high quality of food.
This isn’t an earth shattering taco experience. But it’s good. And friendly. And spacious. Yay!
