Been coming here since I was a child and it’s still my go to place to eat when I want to eat out. The food is great and the staff are friendly to the point of practically being family. While the location has changed a few times over the years, the quality of the food hasn’t wavered. I’ve been ordering the same few dishes every time I come here and I’ve never been dissatisfied. Worth paying a visit if you want some genuine Chinese food at a good price.

Some of the worst Chinese food I’ve ever had. The service was hurry up and leave and the place looks run down. Please Unilocalers heed my warning and go get just about anything else. If I’m being honest the only thing I was able to eat was the steamed rice. Worst 18 dollars ever spend.

My family and I were regulars at their old location in Chinatown near Ranchester Dr. and Bellaire Blvd. We discovered this location and decided to try it. We ordered the Mapo Doufu (tofu) and Gan Bian Si Ji Dou (pork with green beans). The green beans were tough and undercooked and the pork was salty. The Mapo Doufu was ok but over priced. Their whole menu is overpriced and they charge $ 1.50 for an extra bowl of rice which is extremely high considering rice is so cheap. We will be sticking to Chinatown Chinese restaurants.
In response to Joann (or Chris L., whichever you prefer to be called) from Chinese Café, if you truly wish to provide chinatown rates, you should move back to chinatown. However, I believe you stay where you are because your food quality and taste cannot compete with the other chinatown restaurants. You’re the only Chinese restaurant on Richmond and I applaud you for having regular customers, considering your food isn’t the best and your staff is quite rude.

Sweet & Sour Peijing style is typically the way to go. If you’re looking to explore check out their egg plant with ground pork.

I’ve been coming to this restaurant for years (at different locations). I’ve only been here a couple times since they moved, but the taste of the food has stayed the same. They have the best shrimp fried rice In Houston! I always get their fried rice with their green beans and ground pork and an order of their double spicy beef. Both are stellar. I haven’t been as impressed with their sweet and sour pork — a little too sweet and too sour for my taste. I used to order the tilapia with bean curd — very good! But the only problem with this dish is that the size of the fish has dramatically gotten smaller over the years.
Compared to the old location, this one seems to be very empty. I’ve never had to wait to order, and the food comes out faster than any fast food drive thru. The dishes come with a side of rice — and seeing that all of them are family style sized — the portions are huge.

One of my favorite places to eat every time i’m in Houston. Food is great, portions are good, and price is right. Always leave happy.

I used to frequent this place when it was next to Dimassi’s in the center at 610 and Richmond and have been going to the new location this year. Seems to be consistent and a great value. Under $ 10 for the daily special /​combination tray that has two meats, rice, soup and one or two vegetables.

They used to have locations in Bellaire, Sugar Land, and in the Galleria on Richmond. Sadly they’re down to just this one. My favorite dishes here have always been the Kung-​Pao chicken and the Mustard Green Pelt Bean with Dry Bean Curd. I have never eaten anywhere else where they make the Kung-​Pao the way Chinese Café does, and I especially don’t like it when I find my kung-​pao watery and with celery like at some of the more generic places. Other dishes worth trying are the Bean Curd with Black Mushrooms, the Tomato and Egg, and the different fried rice and noodle dishes.
Chinese café is definitely hole in the wall and you might miss it if you’re not looking for it carefully. The restaurant looks like a converted McDonalds and there is plenty of seating. It doesn’t look like much on the outside or inside, but the food is delicious!

Did they change chefs? Owners? Management? The food is different now, and in a bad way. The chicken wings have a different taste, but still ok. The hot and sour soup is so watery and bland. I also ordered the double spicy beef and chicken for the first time, and it was just in a bland brown sauce with red pepper flakes sprinkled on top. That’s it. It didn’t have any flavor.
The rice in the fried rice was also closer to white, than brown. It’s like they used no soy sauce at all, and hence, no flavor at all.
So disappointing. They were way better when they were located at 610 and Richmond near the 24 Hour Fitness.

I wish I could give more stars. I LOVED this place when it was located in the same shopping center as the TJ Maxx on richmond and 610. I do feel that the quality has since gone down since they moved.
On two occasions I ordered over the phone for pick up and they forget something. I get it, check your bags before you walk out right? Well, the way the bags are tied, who in their right mind wants to stand there and spend time untying it just to check everything out? I just wouldn’t expect main course items to be left out, which on both occasions, I did not receive rice with my entrée.
I feel as if quality has also gone down just a bit. I recently ordered my favorite entrée which is the double spicy beef and chicken and it was so salty. :(Very disappointing. My husband ordered the pepper steak and the sauce was so thick. We also ordered egg rolls and they just tasted stale and old.
All in all, I do wish I can love this place like I used to. The portions are great, pricing is great and the people are nice. I just hope they can improve their quality like how it used to be or I don’t think I will be ordering much from them anymore.

This restaurant is the same one that used to be in Diho center years ago. They been in business for like at least 30 years.
It’s one of the original Bellaire Chinese restaurant so, coming in expecting no service then you will fine. It hasn’t kept up with times so it is what it is.
It’s a café, has some pictures and a menu with all their items available. Pay at counter, get your own silverware and drinks. It’s a trade off no tip no service
They owners are lil older, hard to change their personality and mentality. Most reviews negative are for service, don’t expect much.
On my visit, I actually got two thank you’s from them, surprisingly. For whatever reason, try to be nice helps.
Food is still like what it used to be back then, still good. Fast authentic Chinese food.
For real Chinese food, it doesn’t get any better than this in area. I’m sure hope they can improve with service. I didn’t have any issues unlike other Unilocalers.

I’ve been going to Chinese Café since it was on Bellaire and then, when it moved onto Richmond. This is the same restaurant — it’s just moved down the street a bit. This seems to be a place that people love or hate. Depending on what you get — the food can be really good or really bad. The service here is also the same depending on who’s in the front at the time. I go because Mike and my brother-​in-​law love the beef with dry bean curd. That really isn’t my thing so I’ve found a couple of items on the menu I like: beef and green onion, beef and Chinese broccoli and green beans with ground pork. The hot and sour soup is pretty gross so stay away from that. Definitely give this place a try and see what you think.

This Chinese restaurant has been around for many years in Houston. I would describe their food to be Americanized Chinese. Their menu is divided by the type of meat and you can change the meat or add ingredients (extra charge) as desired. My favorite dish has pork and bamboo shoots. Warning — some dishes can get pretty greasy! If you’re looking for a quick and easy Chinese meal then this is the place to go. If you’re looking for authentic Chinese then I suggest driving another 10 – 15 minutes to go to Chinatown.

Fried rice? Really !!! I did not like this food … Plus the sweet and sour chicken flavor is not good !

I haven’t even tried the food yet. This rating is solely based on the service. I walked in with a friend excited about shopping. I spoke to the TWO women at the front registrar. Neither of then spoke back. My friend spoke and one lady mumbled something.
I should have started off with this but this is my first time here.
I asked what one of the items on the menu was and the red headed lady just pointed.
The staff was extremely rude and unwelcoming.

My friend and I were in the mood for Chinese food, so we turned to Unilocal.In case you too are looking for a dinner location, this is not really a «date» place: it has all the ambiance of a 1980’s era McDonald’s café. The area is also a little sketchy after dark – we saw a person hop in the back of a trunk on the street right by it (Drug deal?!)
We decided to do takeout for the kung pao chicken, and beef with green onion combo. For about $ 20, I was surprised at how little food there was. There’s a sizeable portion of rice for each meal, but not a lot of chicken or vegetables. Overall, I would say the food was a solid «Meh»: it was okay but not really worth going out of the way for.

Very good no frills Chinese food. Order at the counter, receive a number and the food is brought to your table shortly. My fiancé and I ordered the combination fried rice with hot and sour soup, chicken egg rolls, sweet and sour pork, and double cooked chicken and beef. The soup was pretty good, I added a touch of sriracha to boost the heat a bit. The chicken egg rolls were decent. The fried rice had a nice flavor imposed from the wok. The twice cooked chicken and beef was flavorful and mildly spicy with a rich sauce and fresh baby bok choi. My favorite dish was the sweet and sour pork, which was unique from any sweet and sour pork I’d ever had. The sauce was more similar to a generals chicken sauce than a sweet and sour sauce, but I really liked it. Unfortunately that’s the one thing I forgot to take a picture of as it was brought out a few minutes after everything else and I’d already started eating.

This place was recommended to me by a family
member. It was a no-​frills, casual place to go to get Americanized Chinese food that was good, not expensive but cooked well and wasn’t greasy or low quality. After reading previous reviews, my fiancé and I decided to try the double cooked beef and chicken. We also got the special fried rice, sweet and sour pork Beijing style, hot and sour soup and chicken egg rolls. We enjoyed everything, especially the entrees and rice. And it was all under $ 40 (with 2 drinks). The service was prompt and friendly. I would def go back!

I’ve been coming to Chinese café since I was a baby. Not even exaggerating. Started at their original location in Chinatown all the way to this brand new one :)
We ordered all our favorites and everything was still the same. My cashew chicken was just how I remembered! Definitely nostalgic.
Found out that most everyone in the kitchen stayed with them throughout the years, some even since the 80’s!
If you hadn’t ever tried the other locations, check this one out for sure. Prices are crazy reasonable and the food is super consistent. It’s a no-​fluff eatery.
I recommend some of these:
Cashew chicken — chicken is so tender
Fried chicken wings — they marinate the chicken before they fry it to perfection
Sweet and sour pork
Stir fried green beans
Szechuan style fries beef — guys. It’s fried beef. What’s not good about it?!

Worst thing ever! Super greasy food and super rude owner and employees! Used to love this place. Getting worse and worse. Too bad! I ordered the double cooked beef with dry tofu. It was floating in grease and it only had 3 pcs of tofu. Asked the lady w glasses to please add more tofu and she said to tell owner while making the most annoyed expression anyone could make. I did and he said he would charge me $ 2 more to add it even after he saw the grease and all the bell peppers I didn’t ask for! Told him I only wanted dry red peppers when I ordered but they also added Bell peppers like crazy to fill the plate. See pictures.
Oh and the kitchen staff stares at every woman very creepy! Like… I’m not looking away creepy.

Same 5 star quality as it was down the street (Ricmond at 610) for over 20 years. I do miss the pictures of the dishes on the wall, that made it really easy to order for newbies as they could see what it looked like before ordering, however the cleaner bathrooms are certainly welcomed. Maybe come spring you’ll be able to dine outside too on their patio? Also kind of miss that they used to have lemons out for water/​tea, and they don’t anymore which is kind of a bummer but this offset by now having portable hot sauce containers, sweet & sour sauce etc. which is good.
Okay all that newness aside the food is still excellent, served so hot that even 20 minutes later it’s still almost too hot to eat, balance of flavor is excellent, ingredients are first rate and skillfully prepared.
My favorite authentic Chinese restaurant by a wide margin, short of San Francisco or NYC you won’t find better food. Kudos Chinese café, for your excellence and consistency — now open a few more locations! Thanks from a 20+ year customer.
