Georgia’s Market Downtown

I don’t feel bad for them being closed, they needed to. The I-​10 memorial location is great and nicely managed. Unfortunately the downtown location was great at one time but the management went from changing the nice lunch menu to taking it away with only a salad bar, and replacing the hot lunch line with a beer trough ! Also the grocery items became very limited. If I was to rate this about 2 years ago it would have received a 5 star. But one year before closing it gets two stars. If they are to bring it back they better have someone who can manage the place better. The last manager explained the reason for switching up the menu and taking many things off was to keep wasting food and save money. BS, now you lost money. Hardly any customers showed up shortly before closing. Please your customers, and the money will keep coming

I was back in Houston and working a block away again. I walked over totally eager to eat at Georgia’s again. But alas! It’s closed. So sad to see one of my Houston cbd favourites close its doors :-((

Per their website, this location closed on Sept 30^th, which is probably for the best. This place had really underwhelmed me the last time we went their for a birthday lunch back in July. They had gotten rid of such wonderfully helpful employees like Rashida and that one blonde dude with the dark rimmed glasses. Since then they regressed back to their earlier days when service was slow and execution in the kitchen left more to be desired, but it was never this inept during their growing pains days. In the end it turned into a shell of what it once was driving away long time regulars like me and my friends. It seemed to struggle for years at this location esp during non-​weekday lunch hours and only once did I ventured into their basement wine bar, The Cellar, but that was only because they were short staffed that day and had one register opened for me to purchase cat food. I missed what it once was, but not what it became towards the enviable end. Can’t say I’m sorry to see it go and looking forward to what will take its place.

This is an interesting place. At first sight it seems like an overpriced downtown café/​store but it turns out they own a farm of some sort and all their foods are natural and free range and what not. You can even take a tour of the farm and get fresh lunch there too for a price.
I heard the owner talk about how the store was his late wife’s and he had taken it over a few years ago and it seems to be a good story. Also, apparently there was some attempt at having employees own a part of the store and run it but that didn’t work out and so he’s back at being the owner with a new staff so the older reviews may not be representative of how the store is now. I’m bad at remembering details so perhaps there are some mistakes in the facts above but that’s more or less the gist of it.

Plus stars:
As much as you can put in a bowl Soup and Salad for $ 11 was great. The Salad bar has a solid organic selection, and things like organic basil, fantastic chicken salad. 4 stars for the food.
Minus stars:
Soup: I went at 12:15, and the soup was still lukewarm.
Restaurant was a dirty, their plates and silverware area for the salad bar was not that clean.
The service was one of the worst I have experienced. I had no real problems as I got the salad bar, but my colleagues had mixed up orders, incorrect numbers, and then the waiter left an incorrect order on the table next to us and left, which was rather amusing.

Fresh organic food. So good. Had the grilled chicken breast with ketchup. Yum! Although u don’t understand the layout, how to order or shop. Not sure what is going on here. Good place over all

Great coffee, walked in and was greeted but the owner and he personally made the coffee for me! Def going back! It’s close enough to UHD for me to grab coffee before class!

But every sandwich i’ve had from there is probably good for me, but not particularly good. I call it the Whole Foods effect. Natural, Organic, but kinda lacking in flavor. But that’s probably because my palate is accustomed to msg, hfcs, Rgbh beef, et cetera.
Not exactly sure what you could do to improve the menu, other than reprogram everyone’s brain to eat healthy.

This was a meeting spot for a Pub tour my wife and I purchased through Houston Urban Adventure Tours. We got there a little early so we walked around and took a glance at the items in the store. It’s good to know there is a place that you can go and find a variety of healthy items if that’s what you’re into. I found a lot of the items seem to be a little pricey but I know it costs to eat healthy. There is also a restaurant area in the store and a little bar on the bottom level. I really enjoyed viewing all the different food items and vitamans.

Go down to the basement! That is where the party is at!
Walking in the store, you’ll find a huge variety of organic and locally grown food and drinks. Down the steps though, you will find their wine cellar and a bar with a friendly bartender behind it. Fancy wines are available for very affordable prices during their happy hour.
But what I enjoyed most was their selection of delicious Texas craft beer, bottled and on tap. I drank an 1836 and More Cowbell for only $ 3 each!
The ambiance of the place transports you to an earlier time. The air is very clean for it being in a basement. This ‘hidden gem’ is definitely worth checking out.

I was looking for a quiet spot with free wifi downtown and I found it. Georgia’s Market is a cute little market/​café/​bar downtown. I was able to get a delicious danish (by Kraftsmen Bakery) and tea, while using their wifi in a quiet café in the afternoon.
I also noticed they have a salad bar, a cooler with juices and other drinks, so it seems like it could be a nice place for a healthy lunch too.
Lastly, we went on a pub crawl a few months ago and got to check out their bar downstairs. A small place, but good beer selection for the size of the place.

Three stars for they’re eat in portion and quality produce.
Staff sometimes just stands around talking and I don’t particularly think this location is in a good enough building to be a market, but the try so it’s alright I suppose.

My first time to Houston and we were staying downtown. Before the family festivities began, I wanted to enjoy the beautiful weather and explore. I found this market and it certainly did not disappoint.
They had outdoor seating and a fresh selection of breakfast and lunch items. Whether you wanted something healthy or to grease it up with some crispy bacon.
I ordered the french toast with walnuts and cranberries and they were absolutely fantastic. The bigger surprise was the mimosa made from fresh orange juice — my favorite.

Great place in Downtown.
I came here after class because I was hungry and needed to study. I had been here once before but they were closed. However, this time they were open :)
I walked in to check out the place. The décor is still new but has a rustic feel, and the layout is funky at first but you get used to it.
The groceries are quite expensive, but
1) you’re in Downtown
2) most are organic
3) they are local, or very fresh
Would I come to grocery shop here? Not really but if I lived in Downtown and needed a high quality pound of coffee or some organic low fat yogurt, then I’d find it right here. Instead of driving to Upper Kirby or Montrose for the next best groceries.
I then decided to order breakfast tacos and a caramel latte for my studying session. Angie, the kind cashier lady, suggested that I checked out their reading loft upstairs.
She also informed me of the «coffee happy hour» which is new to me and said that it’s from 7am-​10am $ 1 off espresso drinks!!! AND students get 10% off! :) very happy!
The tacos were delicious! The whole wheat tortilla had a great taste, and I am extremely picky when it comes to tortillas. The eggs were cooked just right, the avocado was fresh and plentiful, and I loved the mini potatoes used inside the tacos. Also the salsa was fresh, spicy, with a hint of smokiness.
All in all, this is my new, secret studying spot where I can eat & drink anything without feeling gross about it.

I have to second the sentiments of Cathy P. I was excited, as a new Downtown resident, to have a place like Georgia’s practically next door. Sadly though, they are making many of the mistakes that so many similar spots have died a quick death from.
The hours are very limited, think lunch for prepared foods. I went on a Saturday evening, and at 8:30 there was nothing to be had but tubs of cold tuna salad. If your hours are until 9, that doesn’t mean that you start cleaning up at 8, especially on Saturday. Wine bar was thoroughly closed.
The bulk foods and shelves of groceries are sparse at best. Home Depot learned this lesson the hard way, and by stacking thier stores high with empty boxes taught businesses that the appearance of full shelves builds customer confidence. Slim pickings emphasizes the limited nature of offerings.
I would suggest a field trip for Georgia’s crew to the new Phoenecia just up the street.

If you live in one of the many residential buildings in downtown Houston’s north end, then Georgia’s Market is exactly what you’ve been waiting for. Need a fresh veggie for dinner? They’ve got it. Want a prepared healthy meal? Choose from their salad bar, hot meals, or even prepackaged meals (the veggie wrap is tasty, comes with fruit & cake, & is only $ 5– a steal!). Just grabbing a drink & a snack? They have tons of options, all good-​for-​you and reasonable priced.
The bar downstairs is beautiful and spacious, and it focuses on local & organic wine & beer. The staff is knowledgeable & friendly, and I couldn’t be happier that Georgia’s Market is here in the neighborhood. Also, check out the adorable reading nook upstairs in the back if you’ve got some time to spare– charming & cozy!

There are two Unilocal entries for this business, three reviews so far on this one and two on the other, so someone should conduct some internet magic (they didn’t teach that at Hogwarts) to merge them.
First things first: Pedro M. cracks me up. How is this sign any more obnoxious or tacky than House of Blues? I don’t get being personally offended by the sign, but that is offset by how much I do enjoy one-​star rants that I have not written.
If you can brave the sign (?) accosting you on your way in, then you are set up for something cool downtown. I have never been to the original Georgia’s way out in the BFE known as West Houston so I was not coming in as a fanboy with rose-​colored glasses. I was happy to see some fresh new blood downtown though.
If you are going to do lunch here it is a bit on the pricey end. For me at least, this is not an every day thing such as Treebeards, BB’s, Niko-Niko’s, Ziggy’s, Bombay Pizza, and the like are for me. This is more like a «worth the money so I eat right today» kind of feeling that crops up on the same day you consider buying larger sized pants — or the «imma feeling fancy today, it is either this or Quattro for me» kind of feeling when something good has happened in the office or otherwise.
The actual space is … not small, that is the wrong kind of atmospheric image, I suppose intimate is a better way to put it. You aren’t cattle-​herded in or anything like that. It is a good space, but probably don’t want to talk serious business here since everyone will hear it.
Direct competitors: Salata in the tunnels under the Chase Tower, Café Express on Main, Ziggy’s on Main, Salata in the Park Shops … I don’t eat healthy often, I suppose that is it?
Georgia’s is fresher, organic, and a lot of fun things to find to put in your salad. The jalapeño is amazeballs, so much more amazeballs than the Subway-​quality jalapenos at the Salata in the tunnels.
Georgia: a million times better than Café Express, totally worth the extra money to avoid the Café Express nightmare (lines, rude workers, slow food preparation after having waited in line so long)
Georgia: quite better than both Salatas, worth the extra walk and the money

I suppose I am pretty much a gigantic fan of Georgia’s. I have been waiting for them to open since I read announcements last year about the new location.
I went over today. And it was fantastic. A lot smaller than the west-​side location. It was missing fresh plucked mint. But they have been open for less than a week.
I only got the soup and salad, and it was just like the other location. All the ingredients organic and extremely fresh. A lot of unconventional items to put in your salad like flax-​seed, fresh jalapeño and ginger.
I did not venture around to check out the grocery portion or the rest of the buffet. I will have time to check it out, since I will probably be eating here about once a week.
Service was very friendly and attentive.
If you are trying to keep it true to your new years resolutions, this is a good place to do it.
