Houston Art Lessons

I loved this class. My boyfriend and I attend on a Saturday night from 8−10pm. The instructor was great at watercolor and a great teacher. This was my first time doing watercolor and I felt relaxed. The place is very small and cozy and only fits about 14 people in the room. It does have a different atmosphere then other paint and drink events.

My experience at Houston Art Lessons was ok. I had a private drawing lesson. I was satisfied with Amy’s level of expertise. The lessons aren’t cheap, so I do expect a supportive, encouraging manner. I didn’t appreciate being told that collage (the medium I have done a lot of work in) does not require any technical ability.

Some of people love workout in gym, I prefer dancing. In Houston Art Lessons I kerned how to dance properly. teachers know what to do and education process is going very fast

I enjoyed the lesson and was surprised by how well I did for my first painting. The only thing I wish was that there was more space. Other than that, we enjoyed paint and drink night.

These girls are great water color teachers! Many other painting classes I’ve taken were led by less competent teachers whose end result looks much different than the painting I signed up for. I was pleasantly surprised when Amy water-​colored nearly exactly the painting posted on their website, even as she was painting it against a wall. She provided constructive criticism to help my painting look great.
The class is upstairs above restaurants, and there is both free and valet parking all around the shopping mall. They had wine glasses available as well!

I love Houston Art Lessons! I’ve recommended it to several friends over the years and plan to someday have an event there. So far I’ve only had friend and date nights there. I really like the new «paint and drink» trend we having going now a days. Houston Art Lessons sets itself ahead of the rest by offering actual instructions and using watercolor as its medium.
Pros: The Instruction. We’ve always had Amy as our instructor and she does a great job! She really takes the time to show you the exact technique you need to use to create the desired affect. If you want something else, she is super helpful that as well.
Atmosphere: Its more intimate than your usual paint and drink venues. Only about 16 per class. This is probably why the instructions are a lot better. I would not say its a party atmosphere per se… its set up a lot like a class room. But you can bring wine. food, and whatever. Also Amy was nice about letting us pick the music.
Value: Its on par with pricing of a Pinot’s Palette. I think its a better value overall because you leave feeling like you actually painted a work of art and learned! Not just copied what was given.
Parking: Its upstairs in a River Oaks strip complex, above Brasserie 19. On a busy weekend night we’ve had to park in the Krogers lot next door and walk over.
Cons: Tights space, only fits 16. If you are looking for more of a night out etc… this is not a «happy hour» type place. Watercolor is less forgiving than acrylic, s
One of these days I plan to the actual technique classes or advantage of their open classroom on Saturdays.

I got a Groupon deal for four drawing technique lessons and I truly enjoyed them! I had no previous drawing learning, and I found both Amy and Lulu to be great instructors. Classes were easy to learn from and number of students was helpful, since the attention of the instructors was focused toward us. Loved the classes, location is quite convenient too! I cannot wait to go and check one of the BYOB painting sessions!

I’m a fan! I cannot draw, but this is a great class with even better teachers! They are so helpful, attentive, and are there for as long as you need them to be. I’ve only attended the Saturday classes, but it’s been well worth my time and money. The price is more than affordable.
The first time I went, I felt old — I was the only adult there, but it was the summer. My second and third time there, I felt much better. Most of the students were adults and I felt a bit more comfortable about questions or clarifications on instructions.
I hope to return this week! I’ve always wanted to know how to draw, and I’m glad this is here. The only reason I’m not giving it 5 stars is because I wish drawing classes were offerred on more days than just Saturday.

We had the best time painting on Sunday ⁸⁄₁₀. We did the «Pears». It was great. Lulu spent a lot of time explaining each step. She was a great teacher. Sometimes at other places these kinds of classes have good artists but they are not good teachers. I think it is difficult to provide clear, concise instructions. It is easy to say just do it this way or Ill show you but the classes here tell you as well. I have done a lot of paintings at other places and this is far and away my favorite!

We attended a session on boats… Sailboats. We had a blast! We brought a bottle of wine and we spent 2 hours painting a sailboat. I’ve never painted before in my life… but I did a super awesome job with those water colors.
The instructor was so friendly… the location/​room was really nice! She explained everything very well & checked on everybody to make sure we could follow directions… she was awesome!
My artwork turned out waaayyy better than my fiancees… I think I have more talent. lol
Anyway, it was a blast… great date night activity! I cant wait to do it again.

This was a fun little outing and great way to spend date night. It moved a little fast, but it was fun, relaxing, and we got to take home our work! I would do this again!

A friend and I attended the session in December. Instead of giving each other gifts this holiday, we chose to just spend time together and do something new. We attended the jellyfish session. Our instructor, Amy, gave us the guidelines to create a sketch and some tips on how to watercolor, then turned us loose to let work on our own. She was there for any questions. Both of our artwork pieces turned out very well, surprisingly well! It was a great way to spend the evening. Everything is provided (aprons, paints, paper, ect). The only thing to bring is whatever you want to drink and eat.
On a side note, we originally had reservations but the night of our session, there was a bad storm and it knocked out the power for the entire shopping center. This happened about half hour before class was going to start. Amy called to let us know class was cancelled and was gracious enough to let us pick any other session to attend, despite our Groupon being expired at a later date.

So fun! I’ve done a few acrylics in the last few years but I’ve never done watercolor. Amy, the instructor, did a great job of teaching! I went with one of my girlfriends but with the other 10ish people in the class, we made friends quickly. The class was full of laughs and I felt right at home. They are having an anniversary special this month so I’m going to book 2 more classes! :)

I have been a sip and paint party enthusiast for many years. I wanted to try my hand at watercolors and this looked like the perfect spot to try. End results — My friend and I came home with two nice watercolor peacock paintings with paper frames — Good Job! The in between is where I lost interest — as the other reviewer said, this location is intimate and allows for more hands on training and in my opinion it was more like painting in a library. I found myself getting bored and waiting for the next instruction as did the person sitting across from me. I will say Houston Art Lessons is good on training but a little lacking on the party environment. I think this place truly is «Houston Art Lessons» and they have just branched out into the BYOB paint party. So depending on what it is you are looking for (really painting, rather than the party) it might be the perfect spot for you.
The place is small, I mean tiny. I think we had 12 in our class and once you have sat down to paint you don’t get up without a hassle. Because it was small, it was easy to see Amy’s example painting and she had smaller versions set at the two tables. The tables and chairs were comfortable, the art supplies were in good supply and good condition and her instruction and help was very good.
Would I go back? Only if I see a painting that I really want to duplicate. I wouldn’t go for a girls’ night out or anything like that.

I love this trend of painting and bringing whatever the heck you want to eat and drink with you. This makes for the most relaxing time ever!
Amy (I hope I spelled your name correctly!) is an awesome owner and instructor of this business. I came here to learn how to do a watercolor landscape with my girls. This li’l place is tucked away upstairs — entrance to the stairwell is right across the way from the entrance for Brasserie 19. Almost immediately in front of you when you come up the stairs is Houston Art Lessons.
There are two tables that might accommodate 16 people max. Although seven people registered for the class, only my girl pals and I showed up. The three of us and Amy set out to paint a lighthouse waterscape.
I really enjoyed the personal attention Amy gave us. The tips she passed along and the techniques we learned seemed really easy to take home and attempt on our own. Now, granted, I don’t know that in a full class you’d get as much attention, but she seemed very willing and eager to help anyone figure their way along.
I prefer watercolors over the acrylics. There’s more fine motor control that can be applied and so the paintings look a lot less clunky in the end.
Like Pinot’s, she plays music in the background which makes for a fun time. I would say this experience overall was a lot more intimate than Pinot’s. If you’re looking to have a quieter, more personalized, or less crowded experience, you should come here! You can definitely sharpen your artsy side faster here!
