History

Established in 2012.

Mainstreet America’s tour, shop, dine and dream concept offers a new home improvement experience. This concept was developed by Mike Feigin, who is the owner of Design Tech Homes and the talk radio show host of the Better Home Show on AM700 KSEV. MainStreet America center was completed at the end of 2012 with 12 Showcase homes at the same location bringing new ideas to visitors as they tour through the park while inspiring them to improve their homes, or build a new one.

Business Owner

Michael E. Feigin is co-​founder and Chief Executive Officer of Design Tech Homes. Established in 1997, the company is one of the largest full-​service, design/​build custom builders in Texas. The company has built more than 2500 homes for families throughout Houston and San Antonio and maintained an excellent reputation for quality construction.

In 2012, he completed his vision of MainStreet America, offering visitors a new experience to improve their homes.

I love this place! Spent the day with friends touring the homes for design ideas. What an awesome and unique concept. I love being able to see the furniture in the home setting and also how they can help you put everything together for the perfect design. Also, we ate in the restaurant and the food was great. Plan to go back for the cooking classes!

Business 101: if your trying to sell real estate to interested customers that have already driven out of their way (down 45) to check out your company DO NOT charge them a cover fee.

I have heard a lot about Main Street America advertisement on the radio. So, I decided to drive up today to take a look. But, to my surprise there was a $ 20 fee to look at the models and furniture. But I was able to get a free brochure.

I’ve been to Main Street America before and had a good experience. It is a bit overpriced, but I enjoyed touring the beautiful model homes. However, my family and I went for the Christmas event last night. It is a complete rip-​off! Seriously, don’t even bother. The petting zoo was your run of the mill petting zoo with llamas and the like. The Santa parade was pitiful. A local high school drill team chanted «Happy Holidays!» while leading a little train carrying Santa down the main street. The train was followed by Rudolph and Frosty the Snowman waving at the crowd. That’s it. The entire thing lasted about 90 seconds from start to finish. The other attractions and kid activities were just as lame. The «decorate a gingerbread man» station was just a coloring table for kids to decorate a paper gingerbread man cut out. I expected cookies! It would’ve been pretty simple to set out unadorned gingerbread man cookies and let the kids decorate with icing and candies. Also, it would’ve been nice to have listened to a local chorus singing Christmas carols up and down main street. But no dice! The main attraction is still the model homes which they didn’t even decorate! Sure there were lights outside, but I expected each home to be decked out on the inside too. At a minimum, have a fancy Christmas tree inside with a decoration theme that coordinated stylistically with each home. The highlight was when my kids discovered the snow machine. They were delighted, but it was an expensive thrill. $ 100 for a family of 4, plus extra for refreshments. Hot chocolate was $ 2 per cup of watered down Swiss Miss hot cocoa. This event has a ton of potential. Unfortunately, it went almost entirely unfulfilled.

$ 20 per person to go look through model homes and overpriced furniture… really? We went for the Christmas event and all the extra stuff they were doing for the kids had additional cost, which I would understand, had they not charged an entry free on top of it. What a rip off.

This used to be one of my favorite places to go to. Certainly one of my favorite places to eat. I was known for showing friends my little secret jem at least once a week. I bought a family membership for $ 65. Which while pricey, gave us %10 in the restaurant and free entry to the house amusement park as my daughter calls it. Since doing this I have renewed it twice and we have since decided we wanted to build our next house, with this builder none the less.
This year we will not be renewing our membership. As we came for one of our regular visits and we’re told it had expired, we were also told the «new» renewal was $ 300… Seriously? «Oh but you get all tjis…» the sweet girl explained.
Look, we are a family of 6, trying to save to build our house. We cannot afford $ 300 a year for a membership to view model homes.
I have no need for your conference room ($ 250 value, one time use included with membership)
Sad.
We will probably be back to restaurant since, well, the food IS really good.
But, we won’t be attending the Christmas event, the farmers market or seeing our dream home anytime soon.
Greed will get you no where fast guys…

Was over run with spam from every vendor on face of earth.
Furniture and decorator item way over priced and most look like they came from HomeGoods.
I didn’t mind the $ 15 was a beautiful day, not crowded and I had a nice time.
The tablet was nice but was never able to access the information i asked for on the website.
The beach house was done nicely, other houses were over decorated. Most of the house were tacky, overdone.
I wouldn’t dream of hiring a decorating team or the builder associated with this place.

Looking for something fun and different to do? Like going into model homes and OoO and awWwing over all the cool stuff? This is your place! We came on a Sunday afternoon looking for something different to do. Since we’re in the market for a new home soon this was a perfect place to roam around on a Sunday to get some ideas going. They also have a restaurant if you get hungry, and a even a cooking school. Everything you see in the models homes you can purchase. Def. a neat place.

Okay — going to start this off by saying my husband and I work in the real estate appraisal business, so going and seeing houses for «fun» is not my first choice, lol. However — a friend of mine had free admission tickets and I figured why not, get a little exercise too.
The overall experience wasn’t terrible. The homes had some interesting elements (looking at it from an appraiser angle) — specifically some of the outdoor features like the sport court and fireplaces with the huge covered patios to make outdoor living spaces more functional. Loving that trend right now. Also some of the bathrooms were fantastic. I noticed some problems just like other people did — crown moulding not done correctly, cheaper looking carpet in an obvious high priced home, etc. I think the designers might have done a big disservice at some point too. There were a lot of spaces that clearly were designed only with the intent to sell the furniture — translation — not pretty or functional. I was disappointed that they were all built by the same custom home builder. I personally thought they should have had more builder’s represented, but I am sure there were logistics and money that couldn’t make that happen. My understanding was this was suppose to be a more «one stop shopping» kind of place. Wouldn’t it be more cool to have multiple home builders represented? At least a brochure?
We didn’t opt to use the ipad thing, just walked the homes. I wasn’t in the mood to here all the latest and greatest about the home builder anyway — so no annoying emails were sent. And really — the «cut outs» of the home insulation and such shown in some of the homes was not remarkable. We do have building codes that make a lot of that standard in new homes already. You could have seen that marketing ploy from a mile away though. Was a bit confused about the addition of the cooking school (do you have to pay $ 15 just to attend the class?) and the restaurant (why would I go out of my way to eat there unless I was going for a tour?). Strange concept for sure.
To sum it up — go try it once, especially if you have the free admission coupon. It is worth giving up some time to look around at least once. Don’t fall for the gimmicks though! Nobody is ever going to be able to build a once stop shopping real estate mecca. We are all too opinionated!

Overpriced admission and abusive e-​mail marketing techniques.
I went with an open mind and actually mostly enjoyed my time there, despite the $ 15 admission price (to get into a place where you essentially are shopping for other things to spend money on). The TED device is cool, except for the fact that there seemed to never be information or scan tags on the things I wanted to know about. Oh well.
There are some ridiculously BAD aesthetic and workmanship on display in some of the houses. For example, iron gates at the entrance to wine nooks/​cellars that swing and literally slam into the hanging light fixtures in the nook. Really? Another example would be an unnecessarily large ceiling light fixture hanging in the storage space under a stairs closet. You basically couldn’t access the space because of the light hanging down. Ridiculous. I thought we were paying $ 15 because people got paid to think through these homes.
The main heart of this review is about their e-​mail marketing. DO NOT GIVE THEM YOUR E-​MAIL ADDRESS! I read the reviews online before going, so I was fully prepared to handle any slight of hand to get me signed up on e-​mail lists. I thought I did well. I was wrong. Since visiting, I have received probably 10 e-​mails over the course of months from various vendors/​partners that Main Street works with. They all say something along the lines of «HERE IS THE INFORMATION YOU REQUESTED». Trust me, I DID NOT request any information. It seems there is no way to prevent further e-​mails, as my address has been disseminated to all of these third-​party companies with their own lists now. There’s no way to know that you’re on their list until you get the inevitable e-​mail. In an age where there are universally accepted practices and LAWS about spammy e-​mail marketing techniques, it’s shocking and disappointing to come across a company doing something like this. They basically took a mostly favorable experience and turned me upset about it. Dumb.

The idea is nice but we went looking for decorating ideas and didn’t find anything that is our style. The decorating is very heavy-​handed. All the beds and other furniture were very large and impractical. There was a lot of Spanish style furnishings which is cool if you like that. I was hoping to find a paint color we liked but everything was beige or brown. Well, except the random room with blue walls and gold ceiling… what? I guess these are fantasy homes so go crazy if you like that sort of thing. For us, we’ve gotten more ideas from model homes in new neighborhoods. If you want to go, I suggest finding a coupon. $ 15 a person is pretty steep.

The emails are from various products/​companies whose products I wishlisted so if you are in the market for home building products, you may not find it quite so irritating, but for me I wish they had kept it to the 1 email they told me I was agreeing to.

Went with the hubby this weekend for a day date. It as something besides a movie, so we were stoked.
The Good: so much fun to look at the houses! It was nice to get to stroll through all of the models without being immediately harassed by a sales clerk. We had a good time looking through the different samples and could look at our own pace, thanks to not having the kiddos with us. It was not busy on Sat. and the weather was nice so we enjoyed the overall model house experience. Oh, to dream!!!
The Bad: The restaurant. Ugh. We didn’t mind the prices as other have mentioned; however, the food was more like heat-​n-​eat. I ordered a salad that was a mess. The steak was way overcooked, the greens were sopping in some type of dressing, the roasted potatoes were cold from the fridge (yuck!) and the green beans were whole out of a pack. I ate it because it took over 30 minutes for it to arrive and there was only one other couple in the place! The hubby had a pasta dish that was along the line of a low-​level Italian place. The waitress was doing everything and was nice; however, the manager was rude and would not even speak to my husband as he paid the bill. (and we didn’t even complain about the food!) Also the bakery over charged us for a super-​nasty, hair filled chocolate cupcake. Eat before you go.
The furniture was waaayyyy overpriced, but you get a good feel for size and color, so that’s something that requires a little insight.
The Ugly: They take your driver’s license to secure the electronic pad you use to guide you through the houses. Also, they require an e-​mail, which you have to provide stating you read their privacy policy and to receive scans for your wish list. Unfortunately, my wish list did not come through until I contacted them. Now, instead of the «only one e-​mail with your likes», I have an inbox full of advertising and SPAM that I can not opt out of because their addresses are «faulty». I know it’s a giant marketing village. It’s actually marketing genius if they would build it up with activities and I totally get that the models are nothing short of advertising. Is it not enough that we paid to get into this place, now we can’t get rid of the junk mail?! Also, we noticed on our wish list e-​mail that they scanned our address from the driver’s licenses and labeled it our shipping address. Something just feels slimy about it.
If you go, take your time and look through, it is grown-​up wishful looking and does beat having a salesperson hanging over your shoulder. Also, eat before you go and don’t provide an e-​mail you actually need to use and ask they delete your personal information.

Seeing the houses is cool! There is some lack luster workman ship in the homes, but most people may not notice that the bathroom facets can’t turn because they were installed to close to the backsplash. smh
DO NOT, I repeat DO NOT use a viable email address when you check in. This place sells or gives ur email to every vendor on the face of the earth and you get SPAMMED!!! No joke, and I bet it says that In the fine print on the tablet… but the rush you along and say come inside… like getting sucked into willie wonkas chocolate factory.

An interesting experience indeed. The check in process feels like one of those creepy promo things you get in the mail where you’ll get a «free tv» for checking out the neighborhood. We almost left at that point, but we persevered. Almost all of the houses have the exact same overdone Italianate style, but a few are different. There’s a beach house and one modern-​style home; other than that, the interiors and decorations are very similar. By the way, this is $ 15 per person for adults. No sales people bothered us, but we didn’t push any of the call buttons or use the little android device they loaned us (in exchange for our driver’s licenses.) Search G+ for my photos.

This place is boring, and the TED device hardly works. The furniture they are selling is so over priced (much higher than Star furniture) and you have to play $ 15 to get back there and look at it and did I mention they have zero financing? The restaurant is good but there are no lunch specials, you will pay minimum $ 15 for a sand which. The café has $ 4 cookies and yogurt. They’re trying to make this place be some sort of destination but it just falls flat. The only people writing good reviews about this place work here.

Took my family here for my mom’s birthday, and everyone had a blast!
It’s basically a theme park, but instead of rides and cartoon characters, you have beautiful homes that you can explore. It’s definitely a unique new local attraction, and one that’s especially great since Houston has the most vibrant real estate market in the country right now.
Even if you don’t particularly care for interior design, you’ll most likely find something in each home that you’ll love. There were game rooms, mancaves, family dens, a backyard putt-​putt course, and even a secret room hidden behind a fake bookshelf.
Each home has a particular style/​theme (contemporary, midwestern, spanish villa, etc), and each member of our group had a favorite. I loved the large mansion with greek columns that was reminiscent of southern plantation homes, as it had twin winding staircases by the entrance, a master bedroom with a tea area, and a huge theater/​media room on the 3rd floor complete with surround sound and a 70-​inch television. You’ll definitely need at least 2 – 3 hours to fully appreciate and explore each home.
There were a couple of houses that weren’t complete yet, and a lodge area which, we were told, will hold a restaurant, a furniture store, and a gift shop once it’s all completed near the end of February. We’re definitely planning on coming back once it’s all finished.
