New Living

I have been a fan of New Living since moving back to Houston from Austin 8 years ago. Their passion for healthy families fits right into my work as a holistic nurse, wellness coach and prenatal massage therapist. Recently I was looking for something to make our mattress more comfortable but didn’t want to buy a whole new mattress. Since I’m pregnant with baby #2 I’m extra careful about the products I bring in the home, especially for bedding. The guys at New Living were able to help me find an affordable solution I feel good about and I’m sleeping much better on that mattress which makes a huge difference in how I feel during the day. I’m super grateful for this fantastic Houston resource– a real hub for healthy, non-​toxic products and services.

I am LOVING the organic cal king mattress I got through New Living. The ordering and delivery process were smooth, and the mattress is fantastic! Not only did the mattress itself exceed my expectations but the service did as well. Incredible concept and store with such genuine staff and owner.

Back when we first moved to Houston, from London, in March 2011, we bought a Keetsa Plus organic mattress from New Living, which also sells contemporary; clean-​lined; sustainable; & bespoke furniture; cabinets; & countertops, engineered wood-​; cork-​; and reclaimed pine & hardwood flooring, and organic bedding. I know, I know, it’s been a while – I’ve been too busy lounging around our comfy bed to write this review. But the upcoming Elites Go Green event at New Living’s original showroom reminded me that this is one business too good not to endorse. So please read on. I’ll try to make this worth your while…
Our move was paid for by my husband’s new employer, and it was a chaotic one. We didn’t really know what the plan was until pretty much all of our world possessions were safely stowed away in our container. So we didn’t contact owner Jeff Kaplan, until less than 2 weeks before we were slated to arrive in Houston. We didn’t hear back from him for 4 days. I was having kittens, because we’d been told our ship might not come in for 2 weeks after we did, and we had no furniture whatsoever, and nothing to sleep on.
But Jeff remembered us in time, sent an apology & a 10% discount, and put us in touch with Sales Associate Dawn. Dawn ordered our mattress for us that very same day, and requested that it be delivered no later than the date on which we were scheduled to arrive in town.
The mattress arrived on the same day we did – but was wrongly delivered by UPS to an address down the street. Our neighbors pointed out the UPS driver’s mistake to him, but instead of delivering the mattress to us, the driver brought it back to the depot.
After a sleepless night on what turned our to be a leaky air mattress, a rep of UPS called to advise us that his company had begun a formal investigation. We wouldn’t be receiving our mattress until after this had been completed – in several weeks time.
But that same day, a New Living employee, Marissa, called to find out what had happened. Marissa was so troubled by our story that she called Keetsa, who were so moved by our plight that they sent us a second mattress at no cost to us. And they sent it via FedEx. We received our new mattress just 2 days later. Marissa kept in touch until we’d received it. Afterwards, Showroom Manager Maria contacted us by email to confirm we really had gotten it, and to ask, unsolicited, for our feedback.
In all, we paid just $ 515 (including sales tax, delivery, & the 10% discount) for our full-​sized organic mattress – far less than many conventional mattresses. It’s more comfortable than our Simmons Beautyrest, or any other mattress we’ve owned.
So whereas our mattress-​buying experience with New Living was no bed of roses, we certainly got in bed with the right store. We purchased an excellent product for a fair price, and received customer service that was a dream come true. Our buying experience at New Living was one of the best we’ve had at any store.

New Living is an absolute gem right here in our midst. The owner Jeff is a committed visionary and he walks the walk. He established this business as a B corporation, which involves an entire set of extra hoops to jump through that involve helping the community and exercising real corporate responsibity.
They have top notch products and service. I’m surprised to read one review about service issues because they have been super responsive and helpful to me. I’ve bought beds and bed toppers for all of my kids there. I’ve also bought non-​VOC paints and stone sealants, as well as other nontoxic products from them. They are helpful, knowledgeable, patient and trustworthy. New Living also acts as a one-​stop shop for nontoxic/​healthy home businesses, as it has opened space up to other vendors and service providers, from green foods to green interior design.
They make amazing custom furniture, using unique and reclaimed materials. If you want to have something different, and even more stunning than you imagined, give these guys a try. They’ll do just what you want, but have the expectation and the creative vision to make additional suggestions, if you choose to take them.
Keeping your house free from toxins is as important as keeping them out of your food and water, especially in Houston – where the outdoor air quality is so poor, it’s best to do all you can to control indoor air quality.
I wholeheartedly recommend New Living as a first stop in any clean house/​furniture project. If they can’t help you, they will know where to send you. And these guys are the real deal. Let’s support what they’re trying to do for our community and our kids.

I love New Living! My wife and I have purchased various things from them ranging from furniture to bedding and everything is excellent. Jeff, one of the owners, is very nice and the Meaders brothers produce amazing pieces from local reclaimed wood. I am a customer for life.

We bought three mattresses here. One for my wife and I, and two for my kids. We all enjoyed them every day. I used to sleep very uncomfortable and this mattress changed my life completely. I would recommend this place for mattresses and I like also to support B Corporations like New Living.

A great experience. I’m somewhat chemically sensitive, and after carefully selecting no-​VOC paints for my new bedroom, I couldn’t figure out why I was still waking up with headaches. I discussed my problem with the incredibly helpful staff at New Living, and they pointed out that while my walls were «healthy,» my old mattress sure wasn’t! Turns out that conventional mattresses are made of all kinds of nasty stuff that off-​gasses the same way that conventional paint does.
I purchased a super-​comfortable organic mattress from New Living and my headaches have disappeared! Now I’m looking into organic bedding and look forward to being a regular customer :)

Really great customer service. Monte helped us out in choosing paint colors best for us. The Novoc paint I hear is in the 30 dollar range, and we purchased the more expensive Mythic paint which retails at $ 66. We wanted paint that had no VOCs (volatile organic compounds) because we have a 3 year old in our household. Also, they make stuff on-​site so if you need something constructed, they’ve got guys that can do it! Everyone is really nice. They are all about living organically and free of chemicals and believe a home should heal.

I happen to be running some errands in the neighborhood and saw this neat little shop with a small workshop next to it off of Kirby in Rice Village. I get a quick peek at some of their furniture through the window and decide I need to check this place out! I have to say, I really loved it! It was really neat shop. A concept I have never seen before. You know me, I love rustic meets contemporary. On top of the fact that everything just looked cool and interesting, they are also very environmental conscious!
If I had seen this place a couple of months ago, I probably would have purchased our bed frame from here. They do a lot of custom work. I am looking for some night stands, so when I get some time, I am probably going to check out their services. Isn’t their warehouse/​storefront cool? I love it! I’ll post once I find out what the costs are like and if I get a finished product.

New Living is a GREAT addition to the Houston area and it’s inhabitants. I purchased an OMI mattress and Pure Bliss foundation and I cannot wait to get it! Molly was such a huge help in the process of educating me on the OMI brand and ensuring my order get to me in a timely manner.
I later went back to purchase an Austin air filter because I had been waking up sneezing and experiencing a runny nose since the moment I moved in to my new apartment. I did my research and an Austin air filter was what I needed to help reduce and somewhat eliminate the toxins in the air that were making me feel so bad. I new exactly where to go! Unfortunately I could not walk out with one, but the owner (Jeff) allowed me to take the air filter that they used in the store home with me. Talk about customer service people!!! This is exactly how it should be, as far as I’m concerned. New Living is a true community-​based business with a real desire to teach people how to live a greener, healthier life. I couldn’t be happier that I’m just down the street from this wonderful shop. :)

When I first came into this store, I was deeply impressed by the whole place. Houston definitely needed a store that focused on Eco-​friendly/​sustainable paints. We had used the American Clay at our place which had no VOCs, and no paint thinners. Thank goodness for New Living.

Everyone hates buying a mattress, right? Was in the market for a new mattress and had read interesting statistics on organic alternatives. I stumbled on New Living during a google search, called, and yippie they were having a sale! The store is very comfortable and not intimidating (I’m an eco-​friendly novice). Got the 411 from Adam, one of the owners, on the mattresses and he gave me space to try out all the styles. He checked back with me frequently to see if I had questions. I was never pressured into the sale. This is unheard of for mattresses and cars! The bad news, once I decided to purchase, was that I would have to wait 10 days for the mattress to be made for me. I explained that my current mattress was killing me and he kindly offered me the floor sample (had only been on floor for 10 days). Wow! Seriously? And, I got $ 500 off for the President’s Day sale, same day delivery and more discounts and free stuff. I’m over the moon pleased with my purchase. Feel like I need to find more things to buy from the guys. Money well spent!!!

It’s frustrating to live in a city that is all about mass production, cheap products, and oh, happens to be the oil capital of the nation. It’s especially frustrating when you practice green living in said city. Then you find an oasis in the polluted air, mercury filled water storm! That oasis is New Living!
My husband and I bought a home (yay!) and wanted to use environmentally friendly products when remodeling it. We came to New Living right before closing time (sorry!) and were greeted warmly, even by the owner’s dog, Bella! Specifically, we were on the hunt for no VOC paints. The staff was incredibly friendly and mixed our paint choices right away. While the paints were mixing, I perused the recycled glass tiles as ideas to use for back-​splashes in the bathrooms and kitchen. The store also offers numerous varieties of flooring and mattresses as well.
I love this place! The paints were very high quality and turned out amazing on the walls in the new house. We will definitely be venturing back for all our green needs!

I wanted to update this review after visiting the store again, and more carefully looking at many things– again I’ll say how glad I am a resource like this exists in Houston, and I certainly plan to consult them in the future for any changes I make to my home’s floors, walls, and counters. In the short term, I discovered their line of affordable no-​VOC paints. I registered during my previous visit that they stocked them, but didn’t know that these paints are an in-​house line, and didn’t look at the expansive color palette. I’m so impressed with the range of colors they offer and couldn’t imagine going elsewhere when we paint our walls now. The manager mentioned that these are the cheapest no-​VOC paints in the country. Nice!
I also noted that they have eco-​friendly pest control solutions here, including one that’s worked well for me — Orange Guard. We’ve used it to successfully eliminate a fire ant nest in our front yard (but not before a mean series of bites), and to go after the occasional roach that gets inside. They had plenty of other options, but the Orange Guard smells good as well :) I also nabbed a cleaner and polisher for those travertine floors and shower walls of mine– in researching the material it appears it does need special care.
Anyway, pay them a visit and park around the side.
