Oh My! Pocket Pies

I have ordered OMPP for our last two office breakfast meetings, and they are SO GOOD! I’m so addicted to it that I am having them cater my Christmas party. Not only can you taste how fresh the ingredients are, the seasonings and ingredients are just right. Joanna and Joe could not be any nicer. Love, love, love!

I’m dumbfounded that it’s taken me so long to write a review for my #1 favorite «food truck». I have been repping OMPP since the first day I tried their addicting pockets of pure pleasure by stalking them around Houston every week.
Not one flavor has ever let me down. The salsbury steak, chicken chile relleno, seasonal fruit pies, and s’more pie… they all know how to keep me satisfied. The salsbury steak is definitely my favorite. There’s no telling how many of these I can devour.
I had the pleasure of checking out OMPP behind the scenes where they make the magic happen. Every single thing is homemade and they take so much pride in their product. The homemade dough is hand filled and pressed. There is meat being smoked on site, and something stewing on the stove, all to be made into delicious pies. The man that runs the whole thing is one of the coolest, most dedicated guys I’ve met in the food truck game. He remembered me every time I’d come to the truck and even let me check out the inside a couple times.
I am definitely down with OMPP. My heart broke when the truck took a pause on running, but this didn’t stop me from hitting up Inversion for my pie fix. Now it seems that they’re back up and rolling… Time to dust off the ol’ stalking boots and get me some pies.

They had me at organic locally farmed ingredients. They lost me at showing up 20 minutes AFTER my corporate client event ENDED that they were scheduled to provide pies for on 4÷13÷12.
The owner didn’t call to inform me they’d be late, instead she emailed me 15 minutes after they were due to arrive. The filling in the pie was after they missed the event she had the gall to write that I the client was in error for not scheduling them to be there well in advance to ALLOW FOR THEM TO BE LATE. Nice.

If you’d have thought I was a lover of pocket pies, then you know me pretty well my friend. I love pies and empanadas and this place is full of everything that is amazing.
I can only comment on the non-​meat based pies. Every time I’ve gone I’ve gotten one squash and one twice baked potato pie. They’re both amazing and the crust — my favorite part — is perfectly yummy and thick. I’m a crust fan.
The squash pie is slight sweetish while still being savory, and the twice-​baked potato even includes veggie bacon bits! Win-​Win-​Win.
They have little dessert pies, but I’ve never tried one.

Had a weak experience here at best. They get three stars after the mandatory food truck round up. I had some salisbury steak pie and a shepherd’s pie. They’re pretty small but more importantly, not very tasty at all. Sad to say. Tasted almost like a banquet chicken pot pie. It’s unlikely I’ll come back unless someone else really wants to try it out.

Good pocket pies, a considerable upgrade from Swanson.
I’ve sampled the chicken mole, margherita, twice baked potato and the smores pocket pies. With regards to all pocket pies, the pastry crust is delicious, although too thick for my taste. Also, the homemade condiments (ranch dressing yum!) are excellent and fresh. Nonetheless, some flavors did have a few flaws.
Margherita– in my opinion, the best pocket pie. Tomato, cheese and pesto wrapped in a deep fried bun, served with tangy, creamy ranch dressing. Small chunks of tomato and gritty pesto added texture and interest to this PP.
Twice baked potato– I had high hopes for this. Homemade twice baked potatoes are incredible with chunks of savory ham swimming in a cheesy mashed potato matrix. This OMPP missed the mark in a few places: first the ham appeared to be little purple bits (bacon bits?); next the texture was similar to potato flakes (or potatoes that were over whipped) not with the slightly lumpiness one would expect from homemade.
Chicken mole– delicious, moist chicken meat. The mole was strong and over powering.
Smores– No self-​respecting boy scout has ever made smores with Nutella, that is just violation of a sacrosanct code for the smores tradition. It changes the taste and takes out the texture that you get with a chocolate bar. I don’t know if it would be practical to use a few chunks of Hershey chocolate as filling, but if this PP had the added crunch of unmelted chocolate bar, it would be much better. Also, the graham cracker element is missing!

My friend and I tried Oh My Pocket Pies for lunch while they were in the Heights off of 19^th Street! Yummy! We tried their Salisbury Steak, Chicken Chile Relleno, Margherita (veg), and Twice Baked Potato (veg), fries, potato salad, homemade ranch, and S’mores dessert pocket pies! They were delicious! I would say our favorites were Salisbury Steak, Chicken Chile Relleno, Margherita and the S’mores! Great prices also! Can’t wait to go back!

So I go to a food truck called Oh My! Pocket Pies but what keeps bringing me back is their hamburger? Why, yes, their hamburger is indeed the best food on the menu. Now I did try their pocket pies and they are pretty good and filling for the price, but to me, the best bang for the bucks is definitely the burger.
What Oh My! serves is pretty much empanadas, and you can get 1 for $ 3.25, or you could upgrade to a combo where you get 2 pies and 1 side for $ 8.25. You have 3 choices for the sides, mixed green salad, potato salad, and french fries. My order of recommendation for the sides? It’s definitely green salad first, then potato salad, and then the fries.
The green salad taste really, really fresh as if they just dug up the vegetables, washed it in the truck, chopped it, and tossed it together into the baby size serving bowl and dressed with their special dressing. On their menu, it says your choice of dressing, but for the last 2 times visiting the truck, I wasn’t aware that the customer had a choice of dressing. I’ll be sure to ask them about it next time.
The potato salad is what people consider as German potato salad, no mayo but only with oil and vinegar and herbs. This is the style I like because traditional American potato salad always get too salty and creamy. I like the taste of these ‘raw’ potato flavor and a bit of bitterness from the vinegar.
The fries are your better than average french fries. On their website, it says to try it with their homemade ranch, but I don’t recall they provide it with the fries, I’ll be sure to ask for some next time too.
The beef hamburger is what’s this truck all about. For $ 6.50, you get a nice, juicy, grass fed beef patty burger with your Texas style (no ketchup in your burger) toppings. The beef patty is not your typical flat as a pancake but a nice un-​even patty. Most of the time I believe they cook it to medium because it’s still kind of red on the inside with juices gushing out on every bite. To me, it taste like your good old backyard grilled burger, but with better burger buns (not your average 10 packs from grocery store buns), fresh vegetables, and even the waxed paper wrapper gives this burger an down to Earth feel.
The only pies I have tried are Margherita and BBQ Pulled Pork. The Margherita is really good as the pesto basil sauce inside the pie is tasty. It also has enough cheese not making it too cheesy. For the BBQ pulled pork, it wasn’t what I expected but still in a good way. Please note that the it’s a bit spicy for those who are not aware of it.
Over all, the service is great, food is great, and the price is great too. I would definitely try their other pies but that damn burger of theirs keeps being the only food I want to order because it’s just that good.

A mobile food stand with a physical address?
That’s just unheard of.
Well OH MY is just that. They have an address located right next to gallery M squared. That in itself gives this place a good rating since that is my favorite gallery in all of Houston.
They set up shop here from Wed through Sat at 11am to about 3pm. My gf and I ordered the chicken which was yummy, came with a savory sauce, also had the Salisbury steak, which is not your TV dinner crap, but a delicious blend of meat and sauce, the Butternut squash and the El Cuban which were both just OK. We had the combo so as our sides we had the fries and potato salad. The fries were the better of these 2 options, just potato salad just feels awkward for mobile food.
Now onto the sweet side, we finished off our lunch with the S’mores. DAMN how did they pack so much goodness into a little pocket pie?
Finally, we washed it all down with their Berry lemonade. It was delicious but I was so sad when I gulped it all down.
Also, the gallery next door, they let you come inside and sit down to eat if it’s too hot outside. What a great relationship!

You guys, it’s FOOD. From a TRUCK. CRAZY.
This would be enough for a 3-​star review, but then Oh My! Pocket Pies actually provided food that didn’t suck. Is everything on their menu flawless? No. Is the whole actually possessing paper money thing annoying? Yes. Does it matter? Not really. Because it rocks so hard. My personal favorite is the Salisbury steak, but they’re all pretty much varying degrees of awesome.
Also. FOOD. From a TRUCK. It’s like, you’re driving down the street, and you could get passed on the left by FOOD because you’re driving too slow. Like, how does that even work? It’s like magic. Or magnets.

You wanna know what I’m doing right now, besides typing out this review? First, to parrot Edgar V., get your mind out of the gutter. I’m downing the last tidbits of a s’mores pocket pie, basically an empanada, and man is it GOOOOD (cue Barry White’s voice). From the flaky, sweet graham cracker crust with a hint of coconut, to the Nutella and melted marshmallow filling, it’s a perfect portable dessert and it’s cute. Two smackeroos gets you a serving of two, which you can elect to eat now or later. I was too full from crepes to indulge any further, so I had to save mine for later. One for me, one for the boifwen. Later is now for me.
I also ordered the shrimp burger with a side of herbed fries. I thought it was pretty good, the boifwen apparently thinks shrimp «burgers» are an anomaly, but proclaimed it A-​OK and ate it anyway. This combo was about eight bucks and some change.
My first encounter with Oh My! Pocket Pies was at the Art League of Houston about a year ago. It was a cold, rainy night and they were parked outside the Art League, selling their humble pies to hungry artsy fartsy folk who were there for an art opening. My first bite of that s’mores pie had me hooked on Nutella and jonesing for more. And I usually don’t like s’mores. The twice baked potato pies are delish. They considerately use soy bacon in these. The German potato salad is tangy and if I recall correctly, mixed with whole grain mustard.
Oh My! Pocket Pies has got something for everyone, it’s all locally sourced, priced reasonably, they take cash and credit (Visa and MC), and best of all, the couple that run this truck are super nice. I’ve only encountered them at art events (Art League, Art Car, Menil Collection), but you can locate and follow them on twitter.

We went to a birthday party in which OMPP was catering. It was cool to have the truck show up in his drive-​way. Definite bonus points there. I was able to try the Cuban, Chicken Relleno, and the Salisbury steak.
The Cuban was OK. Some parts were dry and I felt that it had the least amount of flavor of the ones I tried. They said to pair it with the mustard.
The Chicken Relleno had a bit more flavor and was moist all through out. Very solid choice.
Surprisingly, my favorite was the Salisbury steak. Yes it does have gravy in it! very moist and delicious.
Be sure to use the green tomatilla sauce for your chicken relleno and their home made ranch goes well with your fries, which were crispy and well seasoned.
Overall, I thought the pockets were decent. the Meal was a bit over-​priced, but that may be due to the organic nature of the product.
I don’t think I will be specifically looking to go back, but I definitely recommend people trying it out.

After an unsuccessful attempt to sample OMPPs due to a lack of updates on their location, I was recently successful in trying the empanadas here, however what I found wasn’t good. If you give Oh My Pocket Pies a try you’ll likely be saying «OH MY!» while leaving, but not in a good way.
For me OMPP is the cousin of a frozen Hot Pocket and a frozen Swanson Pot Pie, the main difference is the dough/​crust is prepared slightly better at OMPPs.
I sampled the chile relleno and the s’more pies. The chile relleno was a crude attempt at Mexican flavors, over seasoned, unbalanced and it had a odd texture on the mouth feel. It’s a shame to see such a travesty come from Texas with our great Mexican culture and food. Rick Bayless would be embarrassed to see someone doing such a disservice to Mexican cooking.
The dessert pie faired no better unfortunately, OMPPs missed the mark again on a spin on the simple American classic. What an odd choice for fillers, it tasted like low quality chocolate or an odd Nutella mixture based on how salty the overall product tasted when combined with the dough. If it was Nutella, I didn’t notice any of the almond notes Nutella would have brought to the dessert, only the sodium.
Side note… I can now see why Houston is so controlling with food trucks, lets just say I’ve seen better handling of food safety than at OMPPs.
When you think of the size of the dishes, the quality of ingredients and the nonexistent value even with their low overhead (moving truck), OMMPs attempt falls way short of the mark for me.
Also, the childish attitude of one of the owners should be mentioned here. This would have been a two star review, but she helped knock off one star with her inappropriate remarks.

I am all for supporting locally grown, independent food products, but I feel like food trucks in general have been underrated for so long, that now they’ve become overrated, as The Sports Guy would say. Don’t get me wrong, the food here is good, albeit a bit expensive, but some of these reviews would have you believe that these pies are the greatest things since indoor plumbing.
I was able to taste four of the different pies they offered: baked potato, squash, salisbury steak, and the chicken chile relleno. All of them were above average, with the steak being my favorite. for $ 7.50 you get 2 pies + deliciously crispy fries. I could probably eat two of these combos with room leftover. Would this then, be a good $ 15 meal? Ehhhhh. The home-​made lemonade could use more sugar as well.

Hm I don’t want to be the one to write something less than wonderful about this unique pocket pies restaurant on wheels, and I want to love it, I do…
But I just don’t get the hype.
I had the El Cuban and Chile Relleno. Pretty mediocre, a little bland for what I was expecting to be Cuban flavors (exciting and over-​powering) and small portions.
Hence the name «pocket»… but 2 pockets jus don’t fill me up for a meal.
It would be a healthy alternative for a late-​nite snack.
Props for using fresh, local ingredients and meat from happy chicken farms.

I open up my biodegradable bag, look down at my hands, and Oh My! I have POCKET ROCKETS. Two Aces in the hole. I ordered the El Cuban which is tender, juicy meat slow roasted in St. Arnolds beer. That description alone had me FLUSHed with emotions. The flavor was like taking a STRAIGHT to the mouth. Still don’t believe how good it is? You’ll see I am not BLUFFING when you try the Chicken Chile Relleno. The flaky dough crust had me doing belly FLOPs onto the floor. The fries had me floating down a RIVER of smashing deliciousness (it tasted like smash fries from smashburger which I love).
The owner is a friendly STUD of a man who is passionate about his food. I can’t wait to ANTE up the rest of my money and try the other empanadas and burgers on the menu. This food truck has RAISEd the game for all other mobile units and will soon command a FULL HOUSE. So hurry up to this JACKPOT today because if you don’t I’ll be on TILT!

Food trucks have been my staple in Austin this past semester. Fun, quick food that works for a balla on a budget. I miss the days when I can walk down 24^th street and food truck hop from korean tacos, to bbq wraps, to banh mi tacos after class. When I saw food trucks sprucing up in Houston, I had to try one. Granted I had to drive about 15 miles to find one.
But Oh My! Pocket Pies didn’t let me down.
The Salisbury steak pocket pie was freaking amazing. It brought back nostalgic elementary school days when I couldn’t wait until Thursdays — Salisbury steak days. I fell in love upon first bite. The outside was nice and crispy, filled with flavor, and a good ratio of pastry to filling. I can’t say the same about the chicken pot pie. It wasn’t as good as I expected. I’ll probably just stick to the Salisbury steak next time. Each pocket pie is $ 3 and serves as a nice snack. Two made a satisfying meal for me. I could have pushed it and ate 3.
The owner is an absolute trip. Very outgoing and nice to talk to. He was very enthusiastic about his «damn good water», imported from Italy. If you ask me, water is water and I would have been fine with tap water.

Why did it take so long for me to try a food truck in Houston?
Oh My Pocket Pies is a name I’ve been hearing about but never really paid enough attention to. I mean what is a pocket pie? I guess in a way it is like a pie you can stick inside your pocket. It’s not bad idea as you’ll have pockets that smell of deliciousness.
After searching for awhile in anticipation with Andrew A. we finally found where the truck was today. In an alley way next to a furniture store, we quickly parked and walked over. Since I already scoped out the menu online the night before, I already knew what I had wanted. I ordered the Salisbury Steak and Thanksgiving Dinner pocket pie. I was going to go for a coke since they did not have sweetened tea. However, the owner showed me this agave sweetener he had and I ended up getting iced tea. Andrew A. got a Thanksgiving Dinner, a Chicken Chile Relleno pocket and an ice tea as well. We also both of the ranch (It’s ranch that HE made!!!) and cranberry sauce (did not ask if he made it, since I was too busy eating).
The food comes out very quickly and was very good. I had never had a pocket pie before and did not know what to expect. The texture of the pie is very absolutely perfect. It isn’t too hard or too soft, it crumbs in your mouth as you bit down. The filling is very good as well not only was it flavorful but there was lots of it. The Salisbury Steak had beef, mushrooms, onions and brown gravy. While the Thanksgiving Dinner, stuffing and brown gravy (I’ll admit I wasn’t really listening to his description as I was too eager to eat one). While I did not try the Chicken Chile Relleno, I only heard good things about his. He mentioned how it was not spicy as expected and really good. With everything already tasting very good by itself, one can only imagine how good they are with the dipping sauces. The ranch and cranberry sauces were absolutely delicious; both were very light and flavorful. The agave sweetener he had ended up making the unsweetened tea taste like actual sweet tea!!! I never knew such a sweetener existed!
Oh My! I forgot to mention that we both got our pies as combos. We ended up both getting potatoes salad as sides. Usually when I think of potato salad, I think of this heavy and thick food. However, the potato salad here was very light. It had tons of flavor and did not leave me feeling like I need to go run miles in a couple minutes. You can definitely tell that he made this himself as well.
I am very glad I got a chance to try something like this in Houston. While eating I was listening to the owner talk about how all his ingredients are local. He makes the dough himself! He also mentioned how he is currently working with nearby owner to fix up the land that was next to us. The plan is to build a garden and have elementary school kids come to learn about it. I really cannot say enough good things about this guy. Not only is her offering very good food, he even has plans to help to others and spread slow food.
Definitely come try this place and even talk to the owner. You will not only get really good food but leave feeling good as well.

I, like my fellow Houstonians, am starting to embrace mobile restaurants. Not as a way of life like those hipsters/​hippies in that town in the center of Texas hell, but rather as a relevant eatery at festivals and all things outdoorsy and eventy. Oh yes, taco and tamale trucks have been around since the dawn of time, but I’m speaking more of the mobile eateries at events, not necessarily lunch time pick-​me-​ups.
Goodbye cotton candy and hot dogs, hello food of a much more substantial variety.
Of these non-​taco (and non-​cupcakery) trucks that I’ve come across in the past half year, Oh My Pocket Pies takes the cake. I mean, pie. Not entirely healthy, but worth the extra calories and fat which will mostly be walked off at whatever festival you are attending. Plus the people behind the screens are so pleasantly happy.
They marry fresh ingredients with a bit of carnival flair and a dose of 1950s convenience. I’ve truly only eaten the dessert pies (blueberry, banana, and S’mores), but golly. Awesomeness. I WAS going to get they margherita, but caved under the promise of marshmallow and chocolate.

I got the chance to try them in the Heights area on a Saturday for Houston’s first annual National Pie Day. I was so excited to get to try it because they’re usually only open M-​F from 11 – 3 and they’re located no where near the office where I work. I figured it was a lost cause… but nope! Before I forget, one thing I might mention is… they take credit cards! Sweet!
They were giving away free mini dessert pies and I had the s’mores one. Absolutely delicious! I’d totally get that one again. I had a bite of the PB&J with strawberry and it was pretty good too. I thought the s’mores was still better.
For the regular pocket pies, I had the twice baked potatoes one and the veggie pot pie. Out of the two, I definitely preferred the twice baked potato. The veggie one wasn’t bad, the veggies were fresh and all, but to me, it lacked flavor. My friend got the same two as I did and thought the exact opposite. Go figure.
My bf had a beef burger and the chile relleno pocket pie. Uh, yeah, he definitely got the winning pair. That burger was so good, I kept begging him to share more. The bun tasted fresh and homemade and the veggies were great. He thought the meat was all right, but I thought it was pretty good, I mean, it’s Texas beef. I definitely would like to try their chicken burger, though. And the chile relleno pocket pie… definitely my fav! Packed with flavor and fresh ingredients. I wish I’d gotten it, but oh well. Maybe next time? Although considering their location, I’m not sure how there can be a next time unless they extend their hours or move. :(Woe is me.
