Poodle Rescue of Houston

Such an amazing facility! I found PRH by accident, and am so grateful I did. They have beautiful accommodations, quality medical care for rescued/​adoptable pets, and personnel with a palpable love for animals. It’s obvious that great care is shown in rescuing and (re)homing the PRH pooches. I’m so happy to have adopted our newest family member here today! If you love animals and/​or want to support a wonderful animal rescue, you won’t find a better organization than Poodle Rescue of Houston!

I do not understand the negative reviews about PRH. I have been there twice, first to just look at the dogs and then, because I was so impressed with the place, to volunteer with my husband and daughter. I met Guinette on both occasions. On our first visit, she gave us a tour of the kennels and the facilities at Prestonwood after we visited the rescue in back. On our second visit, we attended the orientation for new volunteers. Every person I met, from the groomer to the volunteers were very welcoming. My impression of Guinette is that she is nice, but her first concern is the dogs. Moreover, she is very busy, and if she is not as warm and fuzzy as the dogs, who cares? (Though I didn’t find her as unkind in any way.) She loves and cares for these dogs, and in the end, isn’t that what you want in a kennel and a rescue?
Secondly, upon seeing how the place works, I can’t believe she is a person who is unkind to dogs. We stayed on after our orientation to volunteer. I personally witnessed three adoptions taking place and was amazed at how much care is put into the vetting process. When we rescued our dog two years ago (at a county shelter, not at PRH), he had been returned because he had Bordetella, which can be easily remedied with a course of antibiotics. Additionally, as we were taking care of the final paperwork, a woman who wanted to adopt was asking about returning the dog if she didn’t like it. I believe that PRH is trying to keep an animal that has already been through trauma from having to endure a return.
Moreover, the rescue has its own vet and groomer. New dogs are examined and put into isolation if needed, due to health problems or to make sure that they are free of issues that could affect the population. It seems that every precaution is taken to assure the dogs at PRH are healthy. I was also impressed with the sanitary measures in the kennels and by the doggie doors, which allows pets to have a clean and comfortable living area until they are adopted.
On both occasions I found it to be a clean and well organized rescue. I met a number of the volunteers and found them caring, knowledgeable, and welcoming to me and to potential adopters.
I am sure that it won’t be long before we will not only be volunteers but also adopters at PRH. I would suggest that anyone who is thinking of adopting just come and check it out for yourself. You won’t be disappointed. But be prepared; It is very hard to choose. They are all adorable.

After losing my dog to cancer last year we decided to adopt a new family member again. My family and I adopted a miniature poodle today and was very impressed with the staff, facilities and how well they treated the animals. The manager/​owner went above and beyond to find the right fit for my family. She was very attentive and answered all our questions and was very thorough in making sure we were also the right fit for the dog we wanted. I really respect that approach because it is necessary for these sweet rescue dogs to finally find a good home.
The rescue center is very first class and all the dogs are very happy and taken care of with love. The volunteers and people working there are very happy and helpful as well. Also she has an onsite VET! Incredible. How many places have this. She completely takes care of the animals and makes sure they aw completely healthy before coming home.
I completely recommend Guinnette and her team! Good luck!

The owner of this place is rude has no respect for people. If she can’t deal with people she shouldn’t have such kind of business. My daughter went there just to get some information about adopting a dog and this lady, Guinette (the owner) made her called me in California, where a I live and she wanted to know how I took care go MY dog!!! She wanted to know a lot of things about my dog’s care, such as the Vet and the name of medicines my dog use to take and when I told her I didn’t know because my husband is the one that takes care of that she started treated me bad and said she wouldn’t sell a dog for my daughter if I didn’t give her those information! So, why in this earth she need to know about MY dog in California??? After that she disrespected my daughter, offended her and my daughter called the police (there are picture bellow in my daughter Denise A. review. So, my advice: if you want to adopt a dog, stay away from this place because of the owner!

STAY AWAY FROM THIS PLACE!!!
I’m following the advice that the police officer gave me to: «write reviews about this place» and that’s what I’m doing!!!
The owner «Guinnette» is not only rude, she goes beyond she’s disrespectful at the extreme towards people she never met before!!!
She discriminates others by their race and accents!!!
I ended up calling the police because of this crazy old woman!!!
I went there thinking about adopting a dog, I wasn’t sure yet but I wanted to look at the dogs first. I was sure I wasn’t going to adopt on that day because I went by myself without my family. I told that to the volunteer at the reception, he claimed that I needed to go to a interview just to be able to see the dogs.
So he called this evil woman called «Guinnette» (the owner) she came and it was nothing like an interview but more like an interrogatory… She made me call my mom in CA to ask stuff about my moms dog!!!
She then wanted my moms dog’s vet phone number to ask about what brand of heartworm medicine she gives the dog! But she was being extremely rude, doubtful and disrespectful to my mom!!!
My step father is the one who has the dogs vet info, he’s the one who takes the dog to the vet and of course at 3 pm he was at work! And she started demanding my mom to talk to him! Completely delusional!!! Then she said «well if you don’t provide your dog’s vet I’m not going to let your daughter adopt a pet»
But then I ask you: what does my mom’s dog in CA has to do with me and my family here in TX wanting to adopt a dog?! Lol lol
At that time I got up really upset by the way she was mistreating my mom so I took my phone and apologized to my mom for all the trouble and Guinnette’s disrespectful behavior.
I was at her door at that time, I hung up the phone and told Guinnette: «You are rude, and I should have known better because your Google and Unilocal reviews are all giving you 1 star and saying the truth about you… „
She flipped out jumped in my face almost hitting me and started yelling:
“ get the f#@% out of here!!! It makes me sick just to breathe the same oxygen as you» and «I don’t like you»
Now let me remind you I had only just met this woman and she yelled all those things to a person she had never seen before!!! Totally disrespectful and bordering insanity.
Then she started saying «andale „andale“
I’m not even Hispanic and my language is not even Spanish! Total discrimination!!!
I’m a American citizen, I’m a mother, I’m a wife I have my own work and we are a normal family. And I never gave any reason for that woman to hate me!!! But the way I was mistreated at the place was anything but normal!!!
I left and called the police, because she did come super close to me… I was crying, shaking and far from home (since I live 20 miles away) and I couldn’t drive.
As soon as the police came in she started to give him attitude as well and acting crazy, that delusional woman repeated on his face phrases like:
» I don’t like her” and believe it or not she made a grimace and stuck her tongue out!!! All of that in front of the police officer!!! He looked at her and told her that she was giving him reasons to believe me.
At the end I couldn’t report her because she didn’t touch me, even though she did use verbal violence, discrimination towards me and almost touched me.
At the end the police officer told me:
” I’m so sorry about her, unfortunately we cannot do anything about it, I can see she’s a difficult and unstable person, I advise you to never come back here and tell others the same… go on the Internet and write what happened today on reviews“
And here I am! All that happened yesterday!
This woman has no customer or people’s respect at all so I came to one conclusion: if she’s able to treat a person she had never seen before like that… Who knows what she can do to these poor dogs!!!

I contacted this Houston poodle rescue because there was a dog on Craigslist that was lost and surrendered to this facility on Aug 5^th.
I called today to see if this poodle was still there who was surrendered on a specific date. I was not given any information and told I needed to have the dogs name. I then asked what is the adoption process and fees she asked me if I had any pets I told her I own a senior poodle whos blind, who was also a rescue in 2005. She then asked me what brand heartworm does my dog use… I explained that my dog gets procedures done every 6 months at the vet I didn’t know the name but I could follow back up with her. She interrupts me and says to not waste my time coming to her rescue center because heartworm is only self-​administered and I should know brand of heartworm I used for my dog because it can only be self administered by me and because he wasn’t on heartworm treatment I would not qualify to rescue any dog from her. When I returned home I looked at the paperwork and my dog has been getting a injections heartworm treatment done every 6 months but according to her this does not exist.
The owner named Gwinnet is rude, unprofessional and lacking tact in the communication area. I can’t help it if she’s behind on the times or Veterinarian innovative approaches. I just know I take very good care of my dog and was just looking for a companion to accompany him during his last years. Unfortunately, because she is so quick to judge she is probably turning away perfect forever homes for these poodles. This owner Gwinnet is rude, unprofessional and lacking in the communication area. I politely thanked her for her time.

I recently adopted a rescue dog from this shelter. The staff was very nice and let us stay well beyond their closing time so we could play with different dogs before choosing one. The dog we got was fully up to date on shots and had been under the care of a vet while she was there. She was trained to use a doggy door and had been socialized well with the other pups. They even gave me a full bag of food for the first couple weeks so we could ween her off of it and not upset her stomach too much. Very happy with this business and we will be back someday.

Mom and I came out to check out the place for a future adoption, but wouldn’t you know, we found just the dog for her! It’s an 8 year old small poodle who’s owner had passed away, and he was very depressed. He needed to be neutered, so couldn’t bring him home until after the surgery. While he was under anethsesia, they went ahead and took care of his dental issues – cleaned his teeth and did 3 extractions. We learned he had a moderate heart murmur. He was freshly groomed before we took him home. The Poodle Rescue’s kennels are clean and very nice, with lots of happy volunteers. We paid $ 260 for the male. Females are $ 360.
When we picked him up, some women we recognized from the day we we met our dog, were returning the female they had gotten that day, visibly upset, they felt they’d been lied to. This dog was not 5 as led to believe, it was 10, and had diabetes and cataracts. They did receive some sort of refund, although not sure what it was exactly.
After visiting our vet we learned his heart murmur isn’t a 3 on a scale of 1 – 6 with a 6 meaning congestive heart failure, our dog is actually a 5 on the scale – very severe. He’s also older than 8 years old with maybe 2 years of life remaining.
They do good work there, but we feel they should be more truthful about the senior dogs. We would have been much happier knowing what we were getting into.

Both my daughter and I volunteer here. The amount of work and dedication that is poured into the care of these dogs is amazing. They are medically cared for as well as groomed and socially trianed. Thank you Poodle Rescue!

I brought in a stray poodle who’d followed me home, had bathed, fed, and sheltered while trying to find his owner. I brought him in to Poodle Rescue with my own dog, since his presence seemed to calm the stray. Before I left, I was criticized because the stray hadn’t been combed and dried correctly, interrogated about where and when I’d found him, how much work I’d done to find the owner, my own dog’s parentage was insulted, and the owner kept giving me contemptuous looks for not coming up for a snappy new name for the stray, and demanding another suggestion. A dog I didn’t own.
I’d asked to go to the back to see what senior female dogs were available, while I had my dog with me, but was told the rescues were recovering from cases of respiratory viruses. A fishy story since they were actively asking for adoptions.
If I ever have another stray poodle dumped on my doormat, it’ll go elsewhere.
