Shine in the Heights

After trying several places in Houston are for near 3 years, I finally found a great place to cut and style my hair. The location and scheduling are great. The staff are very helpful and courteous. Having a thick asian hair, it has been very difficult for me to find someone who can cut and style my hair. Fabian was great at listening and trying different styles accordingly to my requests. He is very talented and I will highly recommend him.

Fabian is FABULOUS! First visit yesterday. Enjoyed a glass of wine while I let Fabian do his magic! He took his time and even stayed 2 hours late for me. Love my new highlights (first time ever getting them) and my haircut. Thanks for everything!

The stylists are great and really are adept at their jobs because Cheryl does a fantastic job training them. They are up to date on things and use tools that other hairdressers don’t which really make the difference. I also love the products they carry which are not the norm in other salons. As far as hair service goes, this is one of the best salons I’ve been to. I would recommend them to anyone.
I would give the salon five stars but parking can be difficult and I don’t like driving through a small driveway only to discover there are no spots (there aren’t many) and then drive out on the other side through the narrow driveway (well, narrow for my SUV) and then drive around The Heights looking for a legal spot in which to park where I’m not blocking someone’s driveway.
The other reason I’m not giving them five stars is because the front desk staff seems overwhelmed and as such service lacks in certain areas. They’re great if you’re there in person and they really try hard to please customers, but if you leave a message or send an email that’s when things get lost and people don’t get back to you. So that’s why I make my appointments in person now; I assume they’re just so busy that they don’t check all of the messages. That’s my advice to new customers: book in person.
The atmosphere of the salon isn’t glamorous or luxurious; it’s a old bungalow; nothing fancy, just comfortable and homey. There are two doors in which to enter/​exit which can be confusing for new customers and if you enter through the front door then you have to walk through a section of the salon and then walk up some stairs to the receptionist. I prefer to go through the side door though the door sticks.
So if you’re looking for an spa like atmosphere this isn’t the place for you but if you’re looking for the best hairdressers and don’t mind the quirks about the salon then I highly recommend Shine in The Heights.

This place is a gem. Located in a historic house in the Heights is the best location for that urban feel. You walk in and get greeted right away with a smile and offered something to drink.
My hairstylist is Fabian. He is amazing and talented. He talks to me about my hair before the cut for a few minutes. The shampoo and conditioning treatment is stress relief and a real treat. His cut is precise and takes pride in his work as evidenced by the many compliments on my hair.
I appreciate Fabian’s attention to detail and he is focused on making sure my experience is enjoyable. Happy to have found this little place and him.

I have been going to see Jamie for a few years. The salon is cozy and the staff is always super nice. Today I had trouble with my car in the lot and the owner had me walking away with free products after they fixed my car! WoW.
If you want a good place and a great stylist call Jamie! Today :).

Fabian. Oh my God. I have been looking for a stylist for years. I sometimes think I’ve found one but they usually turn out to be flukes. Let me tell you right now IF YOU ARE OR KNOW A MAN IN ALL OF HOUSTON COME HERE NOW AND ASK FOR FABIAN. you will be doing yourself the biggest hair favor of your life. I waited until my 3^rd haircut to write a review, just to make sure it wasn’t just some random occurrence. Nope. He’s brilliant. If you don’t know hair? Perfect. If you do? Perfect. He will guide you and show you exactly what your head and hair can be. Reasonably priced as well, 35 – 45. I’ve paid more than double that for not even half of what he produces. Passion is evident. ⁵⁄₅

I was tired of the same old as cut & color. So, I decided to try a place by my home; Shine in the Heights seemed to have lots of positive reviews AND I was able to get in the same day.
Taylor was my stylist and also did my highlights & lowlights. She was a comfortable chair., her demeanor was easy and relaxed and I also recognized her skills as a hair stylist were quite adept.
My color is perfect, she suggested some lowlights and highlights that she applied perfectly. The cut was soft and low maintenance, the styling was beautiful.
I highly recommend Taylor and Shine in the Heights.
The service and staff are all helpful, polite and the cost is competitive, maybe a bit lower.

Excellent, I went to Anna when my hair color was completely messed up & she was able to fix it, giving me back my beautiful natural looking blond highlights. The salon is cozy, fresh & has great energy. I highly recommend Anna for cuts & natural looking color.

So I needed to cancel or change my appt. was told my stylist’s last day is October 3^rd but she’s trying to squeeze people in and they will call me. Three days later, no call, no suggestions nothing. Not impressed with this type of service. They could have at least called and suggested another stylist.

Just went to Shine for the first time. I have had a regular stylist for quite some time now but the last 2 times had to go back to get more highlights added. The last time my stylist informed me that he couldn’t do my hair one day and then I always want more the next day. Do it right the first time.
I have been on a quest to find a new stylist. I have scoured all the Unilocal reviews for about 2 weeks. I finally decided to make an appointment with Shine in the Heights. I am so glad I did. I called and quickly got an appointment

I was a bit nervous before my appointment since I was going to a new place. My appointment was with Alyssia. As soon as I sat in her chair I felt at ease, she was very friendly and smiling. She listened to what I had to say and told me exactly what she was going to do.
When I was ready to get the foils removed her assistant, Taylor (she is also a stylist) was so nice and friendly as well. While she was washing my hair she kept saying how nice the color was. I was anxious to see for my self. She was right, it was exactly everything I asked for and more.
I want to say Thank You to everyone at Shine from arrival to departure for being so professional and friendly. And a huge thanks to Alyssia and Taylor for making my day!!!

I went in to Shine in the Heights, last minute, for a graduation haircut. That’s what I get for waiting last minute! Anywho… I went in and Fabian Espinoza took care of me. Honestly, going to this place was new for me because I never go to salons. Im more of a Sports Clips kind of guy. However, Fabian changed my view, dramatically! He is the absolute best! He questioned me about my hair’s history and what I wanted moving forward. After a 10 minute talk, we knew where going with my hair. I’ve never experienced such intricate questioning for hair before. I’ve realized that Fabian takes great pride and joy in his work. I have gotten soo many compliments on my new hair style ever since. I plan on going back and asking for Fabian again!

I just want to say that I am SO HAPPY with my hair! After having bad experiences with other hair salons my hair looked dead/​orange/​dry/​dead. I called Shine to see if maybe they could help me and I was so lucky to have Ana fit me in. I love her and she absolutely changed my hair all around. I LOVE my new hair color and my hair looks so healthy and shiny! I am definitely going back and I’m so HAPPY that I was able to find my new hair stylist!!!
I highly recommend this place, everyone was super nice and I’m so happy that I found ANA! :)

Have to update my review to encourage everyone to check out this great local salon. Everyone here is so friendly. My hair has never looked better. They never try and push you to buy products, or service you don’t need. I leave relaxed and with a great head of hair!

I went to Hannah to have my makeup done before a holiday party, and could not have been happier! She was super friendly and sweet to chat with, and did an amazing job with my look. As she went through the steps of the process she documented each one on a sheet of paper that I took home with me and that was filed with the store so I could use it as a reference. Her talent and passion for her job is obvious, and she has the gift of beauty on her side. I will definitely go back to her again for any future makeup needs as well as would recommend her highly for anyone looking for a fantastic makeup artist in the Heights.

I phoned and got an appointment the same day. I’m a very fussy blonde who has been in Houston for one year and have paid crazy amounts and never really been happy.
Hanna was my stylist she highlighted my hair which I wasn’t completely happy with, I wanted it blonder. I told her how I felt and she happily added more highlights. She was very patient and understanding and after that my hair was exactly how I wanted it.
I would highly recommend this place and Hanna was great! Definitely will be going back.

I began looking for someone to style my hair and my bridal party’s hair for my wedding on October 19, 2014 back in August. I went to my regular hair dresser and asked her to curl/​style my hair based on a few pictures I brought. Well, she didn’t seem to get what I wanted (even though she always does great at my usual hair cut appointments). Luckily, while on facebook one day, I saw a friend who had her hair done by Anna-​Laurel Shuttlesworth from Shine in the Heights. I immediately asked if she did bridal hair styling. I received a positive answer and got her contact information. Anna-​Laurel contacted me and talked me through pricing for the hairstyles I wanted for both me, my bridesmaids, flower girls, and moms. Her pricing options for hair were great and then I found out that she even did makeup! But the moment of truth came when I met Anna-​Laurel for my hair trial. She had requested photos of my wedding dress, the bridesmaid dresses, and the flower girl dresses prior to the appointment. She even asked where I was getting married and looked up the venue before I got there for the hair trial. She knew it was important to get the right hair and makeup look for the whole wedding package, not just what would look good everyday. At the trial, she blew me away! She looked at the photos of what I thought I wanted for my wedding day hair and gave me 3 options at once! She parted my hair into three different sections and curled each one differently so that I could actually see what each one would look like on myself. She then talked me through each look and explained which one she thought would really fit my wedding day look and venue. I completely agreed and left the trial feeling great! We had even decided on what hairstyle the bridesmaids would have based on their looks. The trial couldn’t have gone better.
But what really couldn’t have gone better is the actual wedding day. Anna-​Laurel came to the hotel the bridal party was staying at and she got there early! She was able to test makeup on me so that we would get the right colors and then she went to work on hair. She timed out each girl perfectly so that we were all done within the time-​frame she originally planned. Anna-​Laurel did hair for myself, 4 bridesmaids, 2 flower girls, and my mom, as well as makeup for myself and one of the bridesmaids. I hadn’t even put on my wedding dress yet but I already felt so beautiful thanks to her work. She listened to any requests from the girls and made everything come out perfectly. Not only was her work amazing, but she blended perfectly into our conversations and it felt like she was just another one of the girls in our party. She was/​is so sweet and listens to anything you have to say. She even took the time to teach us some makeup tips. I don’t think I could have asked for a better person to do my hair and makeup for one of the best days of my life. I would recommend Anna-​Laurel to anyone looking for hair or makeup for any occasion.

Absolutely recommended! As a person who has had a couple nightmare haircuts, I have been in Houston for 5 months now and had yet to pick out a hair stylist! After some research, I decided that Shine had great reviews at a much more affordable price than most places around this great city. I’m sorry but I refuse to pay $ 100 for a cut plus another $ 100 for color. I paid $ 103 for a cut, tip, and shampoo and condition and I couldn’t be happier with my new look!
The salon looks like a house, but parking on Oxford St is free and plenty and right around the corner! They also have a small lot around back to park in but if you see Shine last minute, just turn onto Oxford. Easy peasy.
I called on a Tuesday and they got me in the very next day. I didn’t have a preference for a stylist but got Anna-​Laurel who was incredible! I would highly recommend her! She was so easy to talk to and Ltaught me a lot about how to take care of my hair and set me up with some great products. Go to Shine! You won’t be disappointed!

Amy has cut my hair twice now and both times I’ve walked out feeling fabulous. She takes time to talk you through exactly what you want done. The cuts of course look amazing when you walk out the door, but they’re done well enough that you can style at home, too.
The salon itself is warm and cute, with friendly staff.
Parking is behind the salon in a gravel lot, you’ll miss it if you’re not paying attention.

Shine in the Heights shines. Their customer service is overwhelmingly polite and positive. After my first haircut, I got a thank you card from my stylist, a coupon for a free treatment at my next appointment… The people who answer the phone say, «It’s a great day at Shine in the Heights!» You are greeted in this cute house by cheery people who offer you a beverage for refreshment.
The cuts were… well mine was good for cutting off the dead stuff, but maybe that’s as much as I can say for the moment.
The hardest part for me was swallowing the $ 60 price tag for a basic hair cut. I know my hair is long, but it didn’t require a fancy cut at all. No layers. No face-​framing. No bangs. No curliness…
If you like the boutique experience, you will LOVE Shine in the Heights. Unfortunately, at that price point, it was a little out of my comfort zone.
