Star Tailor

I googled tailor in Houston and after reading the reviews I decided to try Star Tailor. SUPER good! It took less than a week to tailor 2 pairs of pants for only $ 32.49 and they fit perfectly now. Service is fast and he’s super nice.

I couldn’t be happier. Took in a bridesmaid dress to be fitted, got it back in the same week! And for half the price of the other shops I talked to. It was only 44! And the work is excellent! The guy is not super talkative but is still very nice. He fixed a broken bra strap for free while I tried on my dress. Going anywhere else is just a waste of time and money.

I came in for a simple hemming job on some new pants based on the Unilocal reviews. While he was pinning the pants I asked for a normal break. He replied «full break?» and I clearly said no, I wanted the typical break — meaning medium, which should be standard.
Half a week later, I picked up the pants, and lo and behold they go about two inches over my shoes. Full break, just what I flatly told him I didn’t want. Don’t go here if you have preferences for your alterations.

Our first time here and we most certainly will be repeat customers! The main attraction initially was that we could easily walk there from our apartment. There were two other tailors who were also in the same distance but we went in and knew they weren’t right for us. We walked in to Star and knew after speaking with the man behind the counter that we would be taken care of. Great prices and quick turnaround. We’ll never go elsewhere!

Blown away by my wonderful experience! I dropped off a very intricate bridesmaid dress with hundreds of folds with the fabric. I needed pretty much the whole dress altered because it was way too big. I picked it up in two business days for $ 43. The work was unreal! He did a beautiful job. Unlike many alterations places around here the shop is organized and clean. You’ll be greeted with a smile. Couldn’t be happier with the alterations and service.

I needed a hem repaired in a pair of shorts. He made the repair while I waited and only charged me $ 5. I was out in under five minutes. Very fast, convenient service. Very nice man as well!

Mr Kong was very nice and took care of my sowing needs fast and neatly. I’ve been to other tailors in the area and they charge twice the amount that he does. Will definitely come here again!

I’m surprised by all the positive reviews. I had two very simple requests for this place — hem a pair of designer jeans and put the original hem back on, and I had a bow that was falling off a dress that needed a tight sew on (something I should have just attempted myself no matter how incompetent I am with a needle and thread).
The jeans were hemmed too short and even a little crooked and definitely do NOT have the original hem on them. I don’t think they actually did anything with the bow given that it’s still dangling off my dress.
I can’t imagine having them do something that requires more complicated tailoring given the shoddy work done on my easy pieces.

The alterations (simple hemmings) were abysmal — you can see the thread and crease where the pants were done. He also failed to address the stain I pointed out on my dry cleaning. Worst of all, he charged an outrageous amount for all the work. AVOID this place at all costs — you’ll be happy you did.
UPDATE: Less than two years later, most of the hemming work has completely come undone. Do not come here if you want quality work.

I have taken about 8 men’s dress shirts to Star Tailor to have the sides taken in (I get them second hand from my fat brother). Star does a great job turning regular fit into slim fit, and though I have not price shopped, I cannot imagine the price being better anywhere else.

I had a bridesmaid dress that needed to be altered and I decided to bring it here since my bf had taken his suit here before to get altered and it only cost $ 50.
I got my dress back and I was a little disappointed, the way he sewed the dress back up made it look really deformed. When I put the dress on you can see that the side that was altered doesn’t look the same as the other side. Also my dress had buttons on both side but I guess he had to take the buttons off to alter the dress, so the dress was left with one side with buttons and the other side no buttons.
He did do a good job on the hem on the dress when he shortened it.
So only bring in easy altering jobs here or risk the chance of it being screwed up.
Cost to make the dress tighter and shorter = $ 50

I had a very mixed experience from this place.
came here from the Unilocal search. at first I was happy cuz the owner was very nice, and the price was reasonable.
but the the frustration starts from the moment I saw how my dress turned out.
my dress was out of it’s original shape completely.
the useless me decided to just accept it since he tried to convince me that it looks ok. plus his kid was doing hw there and looking all innocent, so I tired not to be a jerk.
but I found a whole on the neckline when I got home. ugh, so I called, he apologized and told me to drop it over again.
so I did, but it couldn’t be fixed at the same day, so we made a total of 3 «round trips» just for this dress.
the worst part? we live an hour and half away from Houston. ya.
me and my bf do visit Houston every other weekend. but for fun and good food, not for this.
the dress after all turned out ok, if I don’t look into details (rough stitches).
i don’t think I will be back to this place, but I apprieciate the owner’s nice attitude. if you have a simple job like altering length type, I do recommend this place.

I needed a tailor to hem some new pants and I turned to Unilocal.Unfortunately, I’m not raving about my experience.
Basically, Star Tailor was 0 for 3 in my case: I requested «original hem» on one pair and when I got them back — they were just hemmed — no original hem. The second pair was still too long and the third pair, which was supposed to be taken in at the waist is now completed FUBAR’d. I’m always kind of amazed when a tailor puts a single pin in my clothing to mark the alteration… far be it for me to argue with a person’s craft! So I didn’t question the way he was going to take in my too-​large trousers. Anyway, I’m no expert, but he didn’t account for the way they were cut because now they dip way too low in the back.
I won’t be back.

I took two pairs of jeans in on a Thursdsy to be hemmed and they were ready two days later. I was impressed that they put the original hem back on for no extra charge. Definitely worth the $ 15 a pair for alterations!

He is so amazing! 3 weeks from my wedding I still hadn’t had my dress altered– yikes. The quality of work was phenomenal in the week he worked on it. The stitching matched the original and the seams were flawless. I can’t say enough good things about him. The pricing is too good so tip him for his talent!

Not one bad thing to say… really!
I was prompted to write this review because he helped me out in a HUGE emergency! I had a wedding I was in and the morning of, the strap on my dress was torn… right out of the dress (don’t ask how). Anyway, on a whim drove here because I had been a customer a number of times. He was there! At 8 in the morning! He said he could have it fixed in an hour, no problem! I was there an hour later and my dress was in perfect condition, and at only 5 $!
I have also brought in slacks, jeans, and even a couple blouses for tailoring and he has never disappointed! Very friendly and very quick!
People always say everyone should have a good tailor… well, look no further! You have found the one!

He does a fantastic job!!! He is fast and able to work with anything item of clothing I bring in. I’ve had him alter many different items from having my pants made longer, fixing buttons or hems, taking in shirts etc. I am so happy with everything I get altered here. I will definitely continue using Star Tailor for years to come!

u guys, i have never written a review, but this guy is amazing. i have brought him several pieces. they were all reasonably priced and the work was suberb. i brought him my dog’s sweater even and said don’t worry about it looking good, it’s just for my dog, and he did an awesome job. i just appreciate that so much. sometimes his kids are there and it makes me feel good to support one man’s business like that over some big corporation. he does an awesome job and gives good suggestions during the fitting. wearing something that fits makes you feel great!

I am a big believer in tailored clothing and Star Tailor does a fantastic job. Every piece I have brought in there including a gifted coat that was much too large has been tailored to perfection.
In addition, Star Tailor has next day service and the prices are very reasonable. I highly recommend this hidden gem.

Fast, efficient, and friendly — Star Tailor is the one of the unsung heroes of the tailoring community. The simplicity of the place is disarming when you walk in — nothing about this place screams remarkable in any way, shape, or form. The Chinese Man who runs this little slice of fabric adjustment heaven is very quiet when he first meets you, which makes use of Star Tailor something similar to dating a shy person — you have a lot of work to do to uncover just awesome this relationship is going to be.
My first impression of this place many years ago was a bizarre one, as blaring from the computer was some sort of Chinese pop radio over a streaming station — and the proprietor was in the back, on the sewing something or another.
From jackets to hems, from getting that zipper replaced in that old pair of jeans your significant other would much rather have you destroy or recycle, Star Tailor can do just about anything. Recently, having received a series of suits from a WWII vet who, sadly, passed away, but whose suits all fit exactingly well except the length of the pants (and all of superb tailoring from Europe) it was a quick visit to Star Tailor and $ 50 later I had a series of new wardrobe additions ready to rock.
Star Tailor also does dry cleaning, but don’t bother him with the «in by 9 out by 5» nonsense because, quite frankly, he opens at 9 and he is gone by 6 — your window with which to partake of his genius is limited, but the wait is well worth it.
He proudly displays that he uses Mitsubishi equipment in the cleaning and tailoring process (a fact you will see by the huge tri-​diamond logo on the door) so if by chance you are some sort of «brand loyal» type when it comes to the mechanics of how your fashion is fondled, then this will please you.
He’s very calm and unassuming, and he’s all business until you are a regular. Adjustments to dry clean, and tailoring with care, Star Tailor is a fun find nestled right next to D&S Laundry.
