History

Established in 2006.

Tacos A Go-​Go opened in 2006 and fully embraces the Houston Press’ characterization as «bastard Tex-​Mex at its best». Located next to hip hangouts like the Continental Club, the Big Top Lounge and the Mink, Tacos A Go-​Go is at home on this developing funky block in midtown. We stay open late on Fridays and Saturdays (until 2 a.m.) to cater to this out-​and-​about crowd.

Business continues to grow as Houstonians discover us… and come back for more. Look for a second Tacos A Go-​Go to open sometime in 2010.

I came in last night and although I enjoyed the food I had a problem with the customer service. I specifically ordered THREE tacos (one chicken, one beef, and one fish) and when my order came out, I was only given one chicken taco and one beef taco. When I notified the cashier (he looked like the manager) that I was missing a taco, he denied that I ever ordered a third one.
Instead of saying, «I’m sorry sir, I must have misheard your order, let me fix that for you,» he tells me, «You didn’t say nothing about a fish taco, man.»
I ended up having to reorder the taco and pay an extra $ 3 for something I thought I already payed for. He never asked me if I’d like a copy of my receipt so I wasn’t able to completely prove my point.
I know I’m the grand scheme of things, $ 3 is a small issue… but if you’re working in the food industry, you shouldn’t make your customers feel like their word isn’t valid. Especially if they’re TELLING you exactly what they ordered, and you just completely deny it? C’mon man. Isn’t «THE CUSTOMER IS ALWAYS RIGHT» one of the primary rules of a business? I felt offended, like being called a liar. So I just wanted to make it clear that although I liked the food, the manager’s customer service spoiled it for me and I want to make it a point that he should treat his customers better.

More like Tacos A No No. Sorry but this place wasn’t cutting it for me. The beef fajita was seasoned so strangely. It had a weird taste that left me not wanting to finish the taco. Beans and rice were subpar. The only thing that saved the meal was the chicken tacos, chips and queso and the salsa. I finished my meal and had intense stomach pains all throughout the night. Won’t be coming back.

The only reason I cant give this a five star is that every thing is really really good, but it just needs a little extra oomph to be exceptional. The Mexican street tacos, while great, are very over priced for their authentically small size. The go go dos tacos plate isn’t worth getting, you are better off ordering the tacos individually. The tex-​mex tacos are the best bang for your buck and the pork belly on corn was the best taco by far. Guacamole was fresh but its hard to beat the guac at The Grove, arguably the best in Houston.
The ambiance is great, food was good, and if you’re looking for tacos in Midtown you wont be disappointed.

I came here once on a very rainy Saturday night in September around 1am because Unilocal said they were supposed to be open until 2am. They were NOT open! I ended up taking a $ 40 Über ride with friends to a Taco Cabana to get my taco fix, but that is neither here nor there.
Several months later, I finally got a chance to try these famous breakfast tacos and burritos, and the verdict is… they’re alright. This is not taco nirvana, but Tacos A Go-Go’s offering to the taco gods is decent, and if you’re consuming them after a night of drinking, perhaps they are even great. But, alas, I ate these bad boys stone cold sober on a Saturday morning, so, hence, the 3 stars. Sorry, Tacos A Go-​Go, you should have been open that rainy evening if you had wanted a better, alcohol-​influenced rating.

Used to love coming here, between the veggi tamales and their nachos. That they don’t have.
Prices went way up for smaller meals, the food isn’t the same anymore. It doesn’t even feel homey anymore.

This place is a fun stop. The décor, the service, the food and the coffee is awesome. I’ve visited 2x and not been disappointed. Plus the main street location is right off the metro rail. So convenient!
I’ve had breakfast tacos and lunch tacos. But that cinnamon coffee is so worth the trip!

Forward — I live in San Antonio; therefore, I know a thing or two about taco shops.
Review — Just amazing. Been here twice and have been thoroughly impressed each time. The grilled shrimp taco is juicy and the seafood is top quality. The grilled beef taco and chicken quesadilla are wonderful as well.
Now, the shining star has to be their tater taco: creative, well-​executed and hits all the right spots. It might be carb overload, but this taco knows what’s up.
Parking is a bit tough around midnight-​2am, as the metro rail is right in front and the Continental Club is directly next door — still worth it. Décor is like a new age Puebla and super inviting. I will be back time and time again.

Had Tacos A Go-​Go for the first time after ordering a large order for a meeting at work. I had the shrimp and the beef tacos. The shrimp tacos are REALLY GOOD. I wish I ordered two of those instead. The only thing is they were a little small.
The beef tacos are very average I thought but they were not bad.
i didn’t like the sauce they gave with the chips personally but it did not taste bad — just not something I’m used to.

I’ve been to Torchy’s and I’ve been to Velvet Taco but it was finally time to visit another Houston taco institution: Tacos A Go-​Go. Located in midtown, Tacos A Go-​Go is a small restaurant so you’ll have to find parking on the street. I went for dinner around 7:30 on a Monday solo but they had free wifi to keep me entertained.
They recently changed their menu so I can’t speak to what they used to be but I love what they are now. A hipster taco joint with a bunch of different options. They have breakfast tacos all day (make your own) which is a winner in my book. Breakfast for dinner is always acceptable. I made one with chorizo, egg, and cheese on whole wheat. Also, had the chips and queso which almost never disappoint. For my second taco, really had the opportunity to try something new.
Tacos A Go-​Go has recently started offering puffy tacos. A San Antonio food trend, puffy tacos are basically fried tacos so they’re crispy. I had the barbacao which is slow-​roasted lamb in a tomato sauce and it was amazing. Looking forward to my next visit to try some more of their taco options.

We visited close to Midnight on a Friday night that was a particularly slow night for the surrounding bars to Tacos A Go-​Go. Even though Main street was quiet, Tacos A Go-​Go was well populated, and at multiple times in our visit there was a long line at the cashier waiting to order. This popularity can be easily explained as the delicious tacos.
I ordered the Braised Pork Belly Taco and a side of chips and salsa to share with my friends. As a rule of thumb I’d encourage you to order 2 tacos at a time, but I limit my late night snacking so I had a lite order. This braised pork belly taco was simply perfect. It was hearty, flavorful and satisfying. All my girlfriends enjoyed their taco’s and we quickly polished off two orders of chips, a queso and a salsa and left happy and satiated.

What happened? I’ve been eating here since day 1 in Midtown. This year the quality has fallen. Three times in the past year they’ve left part of my order out or burnt the tamale beyond recognition. The rice most evenings is unedible-​like crunchy little pellets.
Tonight I learn they’re just serving tacos (removed all other items). I get home and there’s one missing. But what was most disappointing is the other tacos were not good– at all. The fajitas tacos were missing the normal ‘sauce’ and the veggies on the Verde taco were crunchy and not cooked. The rice was unedible.
Torchys or El Ray is much better. I think Torchys delivers now.
I’m not sure if the Heights location is having the same issues. I would give it one star, but I’ve tasted worse and I really want them to improve.
I will say the guy that took the order was the friendliest of everyone I’ve ever ordered with.

Love the décor as for some reason, though I’m not Mexican, I love the colorful skulls and the other Mexican décor. I don’t know what they put in their tacos but they’re delicious. The last time I was there I had a two taco plate and it was more than plenty. I could only eat one taco, the beans and rice. They are generous with the taco filling. My friend had a breakfast taco and she mentioned it’s very reasonably priced. It was well-​filled with egg too. I was disappointed that though the menu has hot chocolate, they don’t have it any longer, especially now that winter’s coming. At least I did see a cinnamon coffee on the menu that I can try when it’s not night time.

Love the wall mounted art work and overall keechiness of the place. An explosion of color lit with Mexican music and adorned with retro tables and painted folding chairs.
Alas, this is not my kind of place. I don’t care for the self service nor the uncomfortable seating. The view from the front window is nice… a passing metro rail car, light vehicle traffic, heavy pedestrian traffic.
But let me get to the food. I had a two taco plate. It was ok. The street taco oozed grease to the last bite. Beans and rice were ok separately but delish when you pile a little of both on your fork.
Would return if invited.

Tacos A Go-​Go is a great authentic taco restaurant with a huge variety on the menu and some Texas and Mexican beer. Don’t expect anything beyond Lone Star and Shiner on the beer list, but with the powerful tacos, these work well. The tacos are authentic Mexican style street tacos with a corn tortilla, or available as puffy fried tacos. Definitely do the puffy ones for some extra texture. The carne guisado, slow marinated chicken was nice and tender and in a slightly spicy sauce. The brisket taco was awesome with slow cooked brisket and a smoky flavor. The grilled shrimp was also good, but the least exciting of the three. The shells were incredible and the toppings equally packed with flavor.

I love to eat here for lunch. Good tacos and taco plates. The quesadillas are good too. The prices are cheap so they basically charge for everything. Even chips and salsa. If you dine in, they give you a number and bring your food to you but everything else is self-​serve.
Has a eccentric midtown artsy vibe inside. The walls are covered with artwork and various posters. I wouldn’t say this place is rundown but I think the booths could use some revamping. Also, they have no pico de gallo. Did I spell that right? Spanish speakers help me out, here! lol anyway I know it’s a taco place but even some tex mex food trucks I go to have pico. It’s just weird not to serve it. Anyway, tacos a gogo is my go to place to get a quick lunch.
