Specialties

We specialize in personalized firearms training for families and individuals according to their interests and aptitudes. Courses include NRA First Steps and Basic firearms offerings, NRA and CA DOJ Firearms Safety Certificate (FSC) Instructor courses, and private Family Firearms Safety classes taught in customer’s homes with attention to rifle, pistol, and shotgun basics preparatory to more advanced training in personal protection in the home, outside the home and concealed carry considerations. Laser Activated Shot Reporter (LASR) technology is used early in the training so students can practice proper firing techniques even before live-​fire training at the range. Sophisticated video coaching technology is used at the range to detect and refine motor skills. Courses are appropriate for individuals of all ages who have never held a firearm with more advanced offerings for those in law enforcement or with interest in competitive marksmanship.

History

Established in 2012.

Basic Gun Safety started soon after the owner, a university professor in kinesiology (motor learning), author, and former coach/​competitor at the Olympic Training Center began offering Boy Scout Merit Badge Counselling in Marksmanship. Feedback was so positive from the scouts that their parents wanted instruction for themselves and for older members of their family. We started offering NRA courses in Basic Pistol and soon become one of only 6 schools in all of Southern California authorized by the CA Department of Justice to train their Firearms Safety Certificate Instructors to administer the states Firearms Safety Certificate Program. Now many gun store owners, firearms manufacturers, and Federal Firearms Licensees (FFLs) have their employees trained at Basic Gun Safety. The school now has an NRA Training Counselor who trains NRA Instructors in Basic Pistol, Rifle, Shotgun, Personal Protection in the Home, Personal Protection Outside the Home, and Range Safety Officers.

Business Owner

Owner is an NRA Training Counselor (trains other instructors), 3-​time podium finisher in international military pentathlon pistol marksman competition (Paris 1968, Hanover 1971, and Rome 1973), CA DOJ Firearms Instructor Trainer (one of only 6 in LA, Orange, Riverside, SB, and San Diego Counties), University Associate Professor — Kinesiology (motor learning), and author (The Law of Alignment). Spent four years at the US Olympic Training Center working with some of the best shooters in the world including Olympic Gold Medalist Lanny Bassham, author of «Mastering the Mental Game.»
