Clint Carroll Surf School

My friend and I took a two hour lesson with Marcello, and he was awesome — I’ve tried to surf a few times before, but now I feel like I finally get it. His instructions were incredibly clear, made a lot of sense — and what’s more, he made us both feel incredibly safe, and what’s even MORE, it was super fun!

Cannon and Clay were great! None of us had ever been surfing. Everyone in the group was standing easily before the end of the day. The lessons were clear and easy to understand. If they can get a bunch of Vermonters up and surfing they can do it all. Thanks very much for the surfing lessons! Yes I recommend this place!!! Go for it.

Great lesson caught lots of waves! Taught us a lot and we had a blast. Great value for the price too.

My sister got a groupon for 2.5 hours as birthday present back in September which it was about to expire before I was able to use it Clint was very helpful with it, we did the class today and it was a great experience the instructor were very nice and I had and awesome time, of course surfing it’s not easy but I’m sure I’ll be back for more classes!

Brought thru Groupon for my 10yr old birthday girl. She and her siblings over it. Awsome experience and being their first time surfing. I know they’ll never forget this day. Instructor was very patient and worked great with the kids.

Hubby bought a Groupon for him and H to try SUP.
#1: Lesson was scheduled for Sunday. They call on Saturday asking «Where are you?»
#2: Had to meet them at their office location for part of the lesson. What is that about?
#3: They take you to the beach and drop off the boards and say, «We’ll be back in a couple hours». Uhh… I thought this was for a lesson? No instruction in the water with the board.
#3: They had the gall to ask for $ 20 «gratuity» to transport the SUP boards to the beach. If they would actually do a SUP lesson correctly, wouldn’t you meet at the beach already? Why would you «ask» for a gratuity? If you want to charge for transporting the boards, then add it to your Groupon deal!!!
I think this SUP Lesson Groupon deal was more of a way for this company to make extra money in the off season from surfing lessons.
It would’ve been cheaper to rent a couple boards from another location «on or near the beach» and probably receive an actual lesson. If I could give a true rating, it would be a «ZERO» or «NEGATIVE»!

These guys were awesome. I bought a group class for my husband and I and we had a blast. We both were able to catch several waves even though the conditions weren’t amazing. The instructors were great about giving individual attention to everyone and their enthusiasm for the sport was transcending.

The instructors, Cannon and Max were great! My 10 year old son and I had a great experience. We met at the shop for a brief lesson and to get wetsuits, then headed to the Huntington Beach State Park. We paddled out past the breakers and the instructors helped everyone catch waves. Cannon was especially watchful of my son, making sure he caught some waves and was safe after he wiped out. It was a lot of work, paddling is hard, but so much fun. I definitely recommend it.

I purchased the lesson as a birthday gift for my dad and he loved it. I joined as well since groupon offered a deal for two. We arrived to the shop, filled out paper work, suited up, and did a 15 minute lesson on getting ourselves up on the board. We were in a group of 10 in total and had three instructors .
Once we arrived at the beach we spent less than 10 minutes getting our boards and meeting the instructors. Then we all headed out and began our paddling out towards deeper water.
The instructors were awesome. Very patient, encouraging and would even help you if you struggled with paddling. None of us had problems waiting for a wave because there were plenty and the instructor would ask if we wanted to go and would then set us up to try to catch it. There are plenty of opportunities!
Overall you’re going to get very tired because you’re using your arms and legs constantly. Make sure you don’t panic if you go under water because you will most likely fall once and or get caught in a wave but just look for your board once you reach the surface !

I was a sunny Sunday class. I was so excited for my first time surfing. I bought 2.5 hour surfing class via groupon. About an hour was for instruction, changing to wet suit and drove to the beach. There were about at least 17 students for 3 – 4 coaches. I went on water and could not get up. I was so excited to try again but instructor told me to wait on the coast and wait for the next turn. (he was a nice and very patient guy though) so I waited, waited and waited. From wet body, to damped, dried and burnt face till I got my second turn.
1.5 hour in the water, only had 3 chances to catch the waves. The rest of the time we were put aside and wait for our turn. $ 15/​wave huh #%€**+’]\
Would not recommend group class from here.

Easy to book lesson, got a GREAT deal thru Groupon… Class began promptly, and instructors were all informative during land lesson at shop. Wetsuit & Board included in fee… Drove from Shop to beach, parking was accessible. Had plenty of time to catch waves, and had a lot of help from instructor from beginning to end. Highly recommend Clint Caroll Surf School & would def go back again!

I booked this for my daughter and her boyfriend, and they had the best time! Jared was their instructor and he was «rad». He was very encouraging and his expert instruction had them both standing up to catch their first wave.
They both said it was the highlight of their trip to California, and I wouldn’t hesitate to recommend this to others.

I purchased 2 separate Groupons last year that I did not use. The Groupon face value I paid does not expire. As a consumer, I am really disappointed. I called to schedule and apply the value I paid to set up surf lessons. I spoke to Cannon who said I he would cut me a deal and set-​up my 9 and 10 year old with a semi-​private session for $ 120.00 each. This amount was in addition to the $ 148.00 paid for my Groupon vouchers last year. He explained this was a fabulous deal he was extending since my Groupon had expired and he could charge me more.
My disappointment stems from the lack of customer service. The fact that Clint Carroll Surf School is currently offering Groupons at the same rate as the value I paid for these expired Groupons. First, there is a private 2.5 hour lesson offered at $ 89.00 until ⁸⁄₂₃ and $ 59.00 for a 2.5 hour surf lesson for 1 person also available for purchase until ⁸⁄₂₃. These are the exact purchases I made.
I pointed out the current Groupon promotions to Cannon hoping he might offer to extend the Groupon price to me. No, Cannon told me I was very lucky he was going to charge me $ 120.00 each because he was giving me a fabulous deal.
My girlfriend also called regarding the current Groupon promotion. Cannon instructed her not to purchase the Groupon and that she can pay them $ 89.00 directly for a private lesson.

Wow, great experience and an awesome lesson as a first-​time surfer! We arrived a bit late, but they were more than accommodating. We booked a 2.5 hour lesson and we definitely felt like we received the full-​value.
Instructors are very helpful and great to talk to! Would I do this again? Without a doubt.
Straight-​forward, no-​hassle lessons.

Soooo disappointed :(i bought a 2.5 hour lesson for my daughter and two friends. We arrived and the clock started ticking-​as they checked in 12 other students as well. So, by the time everyone got their wet suits on and drove to the beach and easy hour was eaten up. Because there were so many participants and only three teachers, it was slllooooowwww. My daughters lesson (she was forgotten on their second round of taking out one kid at a time) she had NINE minutes of training. I video taped the whole thing and it was 8.53 seconds before they plopped her back on the beach to wait for round two, which never came for her. Her two friends got a round two so had about 15 min of actual surf lessons. Complete waste of time and money :(

Clint Carroll Surf School is located in Huntington Beach and does their dry land training at their shop and take the students out to the beach afterwards. They also have the beginners suit up at the shop too then drive out to the beach. After the dry land training they drive their truck out to Huntington Beach across from the Hyatt Regency and just a block south of the hotel bridge.
I found a deal on living social for a $ 95 dollar private lesson and I thought I was getting a 2 hour lesson, but part of that time was waiting at the shop then getting to the beach so the lesson was just under an hour and a half.
I think my coaches’ name was Garrett, who had been surfing for 17 years and was super patient and knew how to take surfing concepts and break them down into simple terms and concepts. I originally took a beginner lesson closer to home, but I heard that Clint Carroll’s school was better for private lessons for novice surfers.
Unfortunately the day of my lessons there was this insane wind swell with a 10 second interval so I got totally gassed paddling out. Garret noticed this and decided that we try to catch waves on the inside. Also he explained that Surfline under reports the wave size since that day some of the sets were easily shoulder to head high. It actually got bigger since we were out there so they cancelled the afternoon classes and privates.
Even though I learned just a couple of things rather than everything I wanted to learn, I took away some key things, especially that my local surfshop in Redondo Beach undersold me on my longboard.
If you are visiting So Cal or you live here I highly recommend this surf school.

Totally had a good experience.
Have been wanting to go surfing for a while. First time was in Hawaii two years ago and thought to myself, Why do i need to go anywhere else! Im a so cal, orange county girl. Beach is 20 minutes away.
The son, Cannon picked up the phone and honored the price of the Living Social Deal I found for $ 53. Competitors were about $ 100+, so i wasn’t about to let that deal go. Cannon said there was no need for me to buy the living social and only charged my credit card for the promised price. #Win!
When I put the address in my phone, I was surprised it wasn’t by the beach. Don’t be alarmed! The location was still very close, just among a few residential areas but accessible from the street. Had a few businesses around. After you arrive, they have you sign in and give you a wetsuit. Only cannon signed everyone in. For a friday morning at 9am on spring break weekend, about 15 of us were there. All first timers. At first, that got me worried that I wouldn’t get a lot of attention. But fear not, no problem at all.
You do a little 8 minute lesson in the store with a board on how to stand up. I skateboard and snowboard (not well) so It came a little easier. I skateboard goofy but i ride my snowboard and surfboard regular (I am so weird) I was able to catch waves none the less!
The staff seem to be in their early/​mid twenties. Total surfer dudes who know what they are doing. And also very helpful. I am one to ask A LOT of questions, and they answered each one with a calm, smooth, relaxed demeanor. Which I appreciated because I had gone to the lesson by myself with no friends. Couldn’t find anyone to go with me but the group and the instructors made everyone feel welcome, especially me!
After the 8 minute lesson we drove separately to the beach. BRING COINS! You’ll have to grab a meter. You’ll park on Twin Dolphins by the huge hotel. A huge truck came with our surfboards and to my surprise, about 4 more instructors met us at the beach.
Now for the surfing, we each were called one by one, getting individual attention with an instructor. They teach you to balance and push you to the shore, which you are then to stand and ride it. I was afraid I wouldn’t get a lot of surf time, but my fellow first timers got tired and didn’t go back out. After about 20 minutes I was surfing to the shore then being called back out almost instantly. It was amazing.
All in all, lesson is 2 hours including arrival at the store. I would say I was able to surf for about little over an hour. Went out easily more than 20 times.
Had a great experience and would totally do it again. I forgot my instructors name, but he was in polo in high school and moved to Newport. Answered all my questions about how to read waves and how to surf. Totally cool guy.

The only thing is that Huntington beach has tar :/​apparently there is an oil rig nearby and some of it got on my surfboard! Didn’t notice till the instructor told me. Blah!

Derek is so great for helping me to the point that I could stand up and ride a wave! Great instructor and I will be back for a private lesson with him. The waves can be big as the lessons take place on Huntington Beach by the Hyatt. Waves are smaller at other beaches but it’s still worth it and you can always take what you learn here to a beach with smaller waves. I asked them to meet me at Sunset Beach where the waves are smaller but they said it’s too far which I get.

Everything was great got the groupon, but you can just call them direct and they will honor the groupon price. Garret is an amazing instructor very attentive with my kiddo. She had a great time perfect way to spend a Saturday. Definitely going to look at private lessons and also do the group lessons again. Overall amazing experience!

I called about scheduling a session using a groupon that I had seen — I hadn’t yet bought it because I didn’t know what the school’s schedule would be like during the holidays. Turns out I don’t even need to buy it!
I showed up on Wednesday at 10 AM and was promptly checked in and was provided a wet suit by Cannon, one of the instructors at the school. Cannon led us in a brief dry land lesson, which included safety instructions and practice popping up to standing. We then headed out to the beach, where the instructors helped us paddle out.
Even though I arrived the morning after a big storm that left snow all over the place, the water was still warm enough. I was terrified that it would be freezing, but the wetsuits do the trick (though your exposed hands, feet, and face might lose some feeling). The instructors helped us catch waves one at a time by prompting us to paddle and/​or giving us a shove as the wave came to catch us. For those who caught on early, you could definitely try catching the wave on your own. Our instructors were very helpful and set you up for success. Our class was on the larger side (six of us) so there were two instructors for the class. We also saw dolphins which was pretty awesome!
I ended up booking a private with Cannon for a few days later. For $ 30 extra and one-​on-​one instruction for 2.5 hours, it was well worth it, though the group lesson only had two people in it. So glad I got to catch some surf before my flight — there’s nothing as exhilarating as the ocean carrying you down the shore. Lessons include board and wet suit and 2.5 hours of instruction. I can’t wait to get back in the water!
