Humane Society of Huntington Beach

Very friendly and calm people servicing this facility. I found my cat because these people are entering a new animal into their system promptly! Arrived at the facility at 9am the following day and they were professional and caring. I identified my cat — she had food in her cage and for a short-​term stay the cages were reasonable and there was a large flap in front of the cat cage area to keep the animals quiet. Processing paperwork was easy and the fee was gladly paid as I found my cat safe.

Was told to drop it off here because they accept lost dogs, lady inside was so rude and wouldnt even take the dog said we needed it to be picked up by animal control then animal control would take her here. why not skip that step and just take her when shes right infront of you seriously. If i could i would of kept her but i live in a apartment where they dont allow pets

This shelters cool because they keep track of who comes in and out, because you have to sign in. but its pretty small There was like barely any animals, which i guess is a good thing you know. But it just sucks cause we drove all the way over there and we live like in Fullerton.

One of the front desk girls is such a rude bitch every time I come in, excuse my language but she’s literally so angry all the time. She should not be working here. I’ve come in and called in many times and she’s ALWAYS rude with an attitude. I’m sorry you hate your life but people who come into this place love animals and come with a positive vibe trying to either adopt a dog or walk the dogs. She needs to work somewhere else this is not the right environment for her angry ass. When I was there she was also being so rude with one of the employees. And when I ask any question she acts like its a stupid question lol… I don’t understand why she even works here honestly. I asked her if this was a non kill shelter and she said «there’s no such thing» Witch is not true. Ok rant over. Hopefully somebody decides to fire her, this is not the right place for her.

We adopted a kitten a little over a month ago and a week later we found lesions on his paw and ear. We took him to the AAA Animal Hospital next door who spilled the beans that there was a ringworm outbreak at the humane society in the kitten kennel. The «Humane» Society’s rudest staff brushed it off and said that they posted the outbreak in a local paper (you should still disclose this info in person you jerks). Poor Vino will be put down because he’s been in there for a month and he’s not getting better. They kept asking us if we wanted another kitten from next door… are you serious!!! If Vino was a plate of food that was cooked improperly, then I would send it back, but this is a living being we are talking about here!!! More than being upset about all the costs, I’m heartbroken to have lost a family member. No refunds… No cat… basically they told us to go F ourselves. These people are far from humane and I feel so bad for all the other animals stuck in their hell hole. Humane Society of Huntington Beach, you should be ashamed of yourselves.

It is difficult to imagine that the current staff is still employed with all the low stars attributed to their performance, how rude and insensitive they all seem to appear. It seems obvious to me that the owner does not concern himself with the animals or the customers using the Humane Society. An enthusiastic and valuable volunteer neighbor of mine has dedicated her time, energy, and concern for these animals every Tuesday and Thursday morning for years to the Humane Society, was recently «fired» from her volunteer position. She refused, as she should have, from refraining to park on a «public» street near the center. She would arrive early to get a spot on this very «public» street although the volunteers were recently told not to use that street because it was for the employees only. Instead of praising and welcoming volunteers, this establishment chooses to ignore their hard and diligent work and make rules that are difficult to understand. The staff needs to be fired, not the volunteers who give up their personal time to aid animals that require walking each and every day out of concern for their well being. My neighbor worked, not aware it would be her last day, and the staff asked her in the morning if she parked on the public street… Edison…and she said «yes». She walked the dogs in the morning and then left. When she arrived home, she had an email from the center dismissing her. They did not even have the decency to «fire» her in person. Now you can understand why this establishment deserves no stars at all, let alone one.

In 2006 I adopted my dog from here, full breed already house trained Schnauzer. The best dog I ever owned. I had no idea what I was getting, but he is a dream dog, everyone wants him. Well he recently had a tumor growing on his side, started to discolor. Took him to a few Vets in L. A the cost was outrageous for surgery, blood work, etc. My sister recommended I take him back where I got him, she remembers a vet there. I took him in, I was able to get a surgery date the next Saturday. I even had them do a deep teeth cleaning while he was under, that is how reasonably priced they were. They even went as far as throwing in older dog anesthesia. He was happy to be home, but is recovering wonderfully. I was happy with the price, customer service the whole experience. My Dog is family and I am happy with they way every one took care of him.

Regardless of some of the rude, non social staff (and seriously they should be happy they even have a job but I digress) … adopting from here is saving a life! You want sweet, cuddly employees to make you feel all good inside… go to some high end rescue. You want to adopt a pet… go to a shelter! ANY SHELTER!

I will have to agree with most of these reviews… I went in a while ago and the staff was completely rude and uninterested.

I hate to give a low review to an animal shelter because I don’t want to ever deter people from rescuing an animal from ANYWHERE, but they really need to do something about their staff at this place.
I’ve gone here on 3 different occasions and each time I’ve been blown away by how unfriendly and rude the staff is!
You’d think they’d be welcoming and helpful to people coming in looking to rescue an animal but they’re not at all. They behave as though your presence is a huge inconvenience.
That said, I would probably still go back… it’s not the animals’ fault the people working here suck.

We have adopted 3 great cats from this shelter. Always adopt – there are plenty of great pets that need a home.
With that out of the way, on to the review. The single star given is shared by the animals, because it’s not their fault, and the volunteer staff who genuinely seem to care about what happens to every single animal they have.
On to the staff!
The highest compliment I can give is that some are somewhat human. Some will actually listen to what you have to say. Most, even though younger than my youngest child, will be quick to lecture you about procedure and they will give you a similar tone that one would expect a vice principal would give you after being caught ditching. They genuinely don’t seem to care about the animals, or the people involved with the animals, or really anything whatsoever. In the end, this is a place to save an animal’s life. This is a place to bring in a new member of your family. Even as badly as we want to adopt a cat, the staff’s attitude here almost talked me out of it. In fact, if we ever do adopt again, we will be staying, far, far away from this place unless the desk staff is replaced by the volunteers, because at least they seem to realize that adopting an animal is a very good thing. And don’t even get me started on the prices – growing up, you simply went, filled out papers, and saved a life. Now it’s over 100 dollars to do the same thing. Ridiculous.

Calling in from Colorado asking a question as to why Huskies are not acceptable in some parts of Huntington beach as we will be relocating. I work customer service and this place lacks compassion and very poor phone personality. Wow who ever owns this place needs to do a behind the camera view of what employees act like. Last time I will ever call here, and it’s sad 10 years ago that place was top notched.

We got our Pit here. They were really nice, some rude attitude but who cares, i was focused on saving a pit. Got my Adi (4 month old pit) and he is great. Yeah the animal’s my change when taken out, I wonder why… maybe because they are stuck in that cages ²⁴⁄₇? hmmmm

This place is a bummer.
The employees are as non-​friendly as could be.
Interacting with the gal running the front desk made me feel like I was in trouble and was being sent to the principle’s office.
She not only was pissy, but was also uncommunicative.
I’ve never been to this place, nor one like it.
Yet, she acted like I should know how they run and where to go.
Any question I asked was answered sternly and with an air of annoyance.
To walk/​visit with a dog, you have to fill out a multi-​paged form and provide information that doesn’t pertain to anything having to do with simply meeting an animal.
I get leaving my license while out with the dog, but all the other info was quite unnecessary.
The detailed form should be saved for if you actually decide to adopt the animal.
Now, on to walking the dog… They do not have a designated place to interact with the animal. In my opinion, this is very unsafe.
1. You don’t know how the animal will respond to you.
2. You don’t know if the human is capable of maintaining the animal.
3. If the animal gets loose, it only has 2 places to go:
A small sketchy road that leads to other businesses and then Newland, which people travel at high speed.
What in the world are they thinking?
No matter how adorable/​well-​mannered the animal is, once it’s out of it’s cage… their entire demeanor changes!
For the safety of both species, they should really consider a designated meet and greet area.
From my understanding, the vet next door owns the rescue and that all money profits HIM, not the rescuing of animals.
When I called earlier in the day and spoke with a staff member, she advised that to adopt the dog (Styles) I was interested in, it’d be $ 65 and a required pet training class (which is cool). When I got there and inquired again about the cost, it magically jumped up to over a $ 100 because he was a puppy. The person on the phone knew how old he was, and yet gave me the wrong info. Not sure if this is a tactic to get people in or just an innocent mistake, either way, when I stated that the price given to me earlier was lower, I once again got a pissy response.
Obviously the animals at this shelter shouldn’t be punished because of the humans running the business, but man, they don’t make it easy to WANT to adopt from them. Which in the end, is horrible and really really sad.

Unfortunately we have had our dog get all of it’s shots here. She has had her yearly shots here and anytime she needed a check up she would get it here.
Let me tell you!, each time she has gone there she has gotten sick from some time of illness!!!
First time she went she had kennel cough immediately after!
This recent time she went for a checkup she came back with kennel cough again, thought I’m thinking it could also be canine influenza!!!
Place is dirty or something because she always get sick from going to the vet!!!
WTF! THEY NEED TO MAINTAIN SANITATION!

I got my cat a few years ago from there. They had no answers from where he was from, and didn’t even have a name when I had first showed up. I’m happy to say that the cat is great. Although they may not be the most organized here, they are doing a good service to the animals. It’s better to get an animal from here than a breader. I love my cat, and he thinks he’s a dog. He plays fetch with a ball, and meets me at the door when I get home from work.
Don’t let the animals suffer over a little mishaps.
This is a really good place to find a good animal.

Wow. What a disappointment. My adult daughter and I went to look for a cat and found the staff to be preoccupied and disinterested. I had to fill out two sheets of paperwork and give them my driver’s license to hold a cat AND could not hold it in the lobby waiting room as the manager had her dog there. We therefore had to hold the cat in front of his kennel, standing up, while dogs barked in other kennels all around. Needless to say, the cat was very frightened. One of the volunteers said «this is not the place to get a good overview of the cat’s temperament.»
When I asked about information concerning the cat’s background (was he good with other pets etc.) they said all they could tell me was he was a stray, about a year old and in good health. Frankly, I would get better information and help at a shelter, which we will do. Don’t waste your time here.

Oh man. This place isn’t even a non profit. They’re not associated with the Humane Society of America. They’re a for profit owned by the vet next door. They’re awful. I got my cat there, and while I’m so glad I have my cat, I’m so sad that I paid $ 90 for her that went to a for profit organization.
They staff was rude and disinterested. They kept losing my paperwork and getting confused about what was going on with what animals. Completely ridiculous.
My cat had been an owner surrender, and had only been there 1 week before I adopted her. She was already spayed, but they still wanted $ 90 for her. I know that’s somewhat standard, but considering that they’re a for profit, I’m sickened. They shaved her belly to find her scar from being spayed, and she ended up licking her belly raw and bleeding because of the irritation. You can find the spaying scar without shaving a cat you know?
She also had fleas, and a pretty serious upper respiratory infection. Really, for a for profit and $ 90 to some vet that’s disgusting. The poor cat was miserable, I really can’t believe this shelter. It makes me want to go an adopt all of the cats, but I don’t want some dumb vet to get my money.
STAY AWAY FROM THIS PLACE!!!

For my 200^th review, I wanted to do something kind of special. My 9 year old girl wanted a pet of her very own to take care of. She started looking in books and magazines and was naturally drawn to the pure bred animals. All cute and cuddly.
I needed to explain the difference between a pet shop dog, a breeder and a shelter. After hearing what happens in pet mills and the unhealthy animals that are produced, we started to discuss breeders and how they produce animals that are totally unnecessary. The world is filled with a – holes that want to to turn a quick buck by selling puppies while thousands are killed each week in shelters.
She quickly understood that she could do a mitsvah, and act of kindness, by rescuing an animal rather than helping an illicit underground industry.
See the attached photo. This is «Sparkles-​Bubbles-​Rainbow-​Unicorn-​Dog»… «Sparky» for short. He is a MUTT… a forgotten, left for dead, mixed breed animal. He is also happy, perky, well mannered, housebroken, and has made my little girl really, really happy.
The Humane Society is a wonderful place, doing God’s work. They were wonderful to deal with and very professional.

So i experienced a better Humane Society in my lifetime.

I heard that they were giving away bunnies there for «free» so i decided to go adopt one. I spoke to Jill who was very nice and helpful.
So it took me a good 40 min to get there from where i live. As soon as i got inside the building i was totally being ignored as if i was fukin invisible. There were at least 5 workers standing around the desk bullshitting. No one cared to acknowledge that i was there.
Sorry but i had to rudely interrupt there conversations and ask where they bunnies were. The girl at the front said «YOU HAVE TO SIGN IN»
Then she went about her business bullshitting again. Then i stood there after i signed in and waited another 3 — 5 min before i had to rudely interrupt her bullshitting again. I asked her «Can you tell me where the bunnies are» She pointed outside and said around the corner…
In my mind i was like go fu** yourself around the corner bit**… But i couldn’t say anything because i had my 3 year old daughter with me. I would have been more pissed off if my daughter was older and understood that these people are being a**holes.
So i was kind of mislead because there were no Bunnies. Only huge ass rabbits. There is a difference between bunnies and rabbits. Do they not know that…
Whatever! That is the last time i go that unhelpful animal shelter. Sorry ANIMALS! Blame the staff…
