Great affordable classes for starting students /​kids on computer language classes. My daughter had no previous Java knowledge but was able to grasp Greg’s lessons

My 10 year-​old has taken the Scratch afterschool program through Techscool and just took the 5 hour javascript class. Despite our worry that he was one of the younger students in the class he had a blast and kept up very well. The instructors are invested, smart, and in tune with their students’ needs. My son came home excited about what he learned and asking to go back!

I have worked in IT for 30 years. When my daughter came to me and asked to sign up for Techschool I was proud that my daughter would take an interest in my field. I see a lot of «trained» professionals, with various certificates, in this field who really don’t understand what they are doing. How many times have you been on the phone with an «expert» and you felt like they were really just reading off of a checklist or decision tree in trying to solve your problem? Those IT people are not what you want your child to become.
I have talked to my daughter about Greg’s methodology, or training practices, in class, and he uses techniques which teach the children how to be in the driver’s seat. His students are not controlled by the technology, he teaches them how to be in control and make the technology respond to them. There is a difference and I see it in my professional career every day. There are those who take control and those who are just hanging around. IT boils down to basic common sense and problem solving. Greg teaches his students these fundamental problem solving skills.
I work with great people, literally all over the world, who demonstrate these skills day in and day out. I feel that Greg’s students will stand among their ranks when their day comes.

As a child, most kids will say that they want to become a doctor, fireman, or some occupation that is ubiquitously portrayed by actors/​actresses on TV. Children rarely say they want to become a computer engineer. As a technical recruiter, I see first-​hand how much in demand good computer engineers are. I’m not pushing my kids to become computer programmers. However, I would like to expose them to it so that they know that it’s an option.
The Scratch program taught by Techscool is a great way to introduce my 2 daughters (ages 8 and 9) to computer programming. The class teaches kids how to develop games using Scratch. The kids don’t actually learn real programming languages such as javascript, java, or python. However they are taught the basic concepts of programming (variables, conditions, and loops). It exercises their logic and problem solving skills. Greg Butler heads up this program and is the primary teacher. He is extremely patient with the children and is able to break down concepts in a way that children understand. He makes learning fun and approachable. My girls really enjoy his class for different reasons. My older daughter likes building custom games and making them work. While my younger daughter enjoys the design elements of making games (drawing characters, creating the environment, etc.).
