Welcome to the Husum Riverside Bed & Breakfast. We invite you to step away from your everyday hectic life and into a slower, more peaceful pace for the day. From the luxurious sheets and linens to the distinctive and relaxing décor, our five European inspired rooms will invite you to kick off your shoes and stay awhile. Then there’s breakfast!
You won’t need your passport to be carried away to one of our five favorite European escapes. We’ve thought of everything you might need to enhance your travel and vacation experience. Need help scheduling a river excursion — we can do that. Want to schedule a personalized in-room massage — we can help with that too. Our rooms are cozy, inviting and centrally located for wherever your itinerary takes you in the Columbia River Gorge.
Traditional European breakfast always includes some type of fresh baked bread or roll, fruit or vegetables, meat and cheese, and of course… coffee. Our breakfast will transport you to the hills of Salzburg or the streets of Paris by delighting your senses with fresh baked German semmels, fruity scones, meat, cheese and fresh fruit. We also provide greek yogurt and granola if you desire something more Americanized. Finish out your meal with fresh locally roasted coffee and you’re good to go.
Our beautiful patio setting offers a great place to enjoy a traditional Viennese Iced Coffee or a piece of Black Forest Cherry Cake. Need something more substantial? Check out our daily specials.
History
Established in 1881.
The Columbia River became the main artery of the Oregon Trail System during the turn of the 19th century. River barging was infinitely easier and more comfortable than wagon travel. However, there were portages around falls and rapids in the river that required off-loading of the wagons and traveling over land to the next downstream barge landing. Freight wagons could only travel around 20 miles per day, and required a stop for the drivers with food, lodging, and, more importantly, ice blocks to keep perishables from spoiling. As a result, each road house usually had a brick building, like the one you see in the center of our property. These housed a constant stream of ice blocks harvested from the ice caves on Mt. Adams, which were packed in saw dust to dust to keep from melting for weeks on end.
