When asked why their moving box prices are 5x higher than a normal uhaul store the owner responded with «well I’m the only one you can get boxes from in tahoe so that’s what I charge.»
Save yourself the hassle, and arrogance, and check out the uhaul in South Lake Tahoe, there are two, one on Emerald Bay road and one in Stateline… and they are very friendly and much less expensive.

Showed up at my appointed time to pick up our trailer, but it wasn’t available. The guy decided to only phone us a minute before our pick up time to let us know even though the trailer was supposed to be back a half hour before our schedule pickup. He suggested we come back again next week, but neglected to tell us that uhaul offers a $ 50 refund when they can’t fulfill your reservation. The other guy was quite rude and unfriendly from the start. I found out about the refund and managed to get it from the uhaul customer service on the phone. too bad they are the only place around…

Me: «We need to rent a heavy-​duty standing up thingie that helps us bring boxes from the car to inside the convention center so they don’t charge us $ 200 for union labor for 15 minutes of work.» I know I put my co-​workers through the wringer sometimes, I’m so sorry. When you live in a small town like this, the rule of thumb is you can either find whatever you need in 5 minutes or you’ll need to drive an hour to get it in Reno or Carson. Fortunately, the local UHaul franchise here was happy to help us out — very easy and inexpensive to rent whatever those heavy-​duty standing up thingie things are called.

Josh was amazingly helpful, gracious and accommodating. They picked up the slack when other Uhaul facilities had messed up, and made things right. A very positive experience, I would come back here in a second.

After returning a well swept utility trailer the owner insisted on charging 10 $ for small amount of pine needle scree that had become trapped in the space between the «Uhaul» sign and the metal mesh backing it. I had tried everything to dislodge the scree but could not get it all out. When I said that this was the result of a design flaw, the owner snapped that utility trailers weren’t meant for carrying pine needles and that I shouldn’t have used it for that. When I asked what were Uhaul utility trailers intended use, I was told «lawn furniture».
Uhaul’s website clearly states that their utility trailers are «perfect for building supplies and landscaping materials…» both of which commonly contain small particles such as soil, dust, and gravel. When I first inquired with Alpine Storage my intent to rent a trailer for pine needles, they raised no objection.
Alpine Storage has terrible reviews on Unilocal but I went anyway because they have the only trailer rental in the area. I thought that Molly M’s review stating that she felt sorry for the owners family crossed a line. I was wrong. He was one of the rudest people that I have had the misfortune to do business with. During his tirade his employees hung their heads in embarrassment. I was sorry for them.
In over 50 years at Tahoe’s North Shore, I have enjoyed commerce with hundreds of honest, ethical, customer friendly businesses struggling to survive in a seasonal resort setting. It’s unfair to them that a business that is none of those things brings disgrace to the whole community. Until there is another option, I suggest that you make the drive to Carson or Reno for truck and trailer rentals.

I did not even want to give this place one star, but it makes you. if I could give it negative stars I would, that is how much I hate this place and the owner. Like the other review said, the owner is a complete scam artist and is the rudest man you will ever deal with. His prices are a complete rip off and he will treat you like crap from beginning to end. He WILL rip you off when there are much better prices around. He seems to be a very sad and mean little man that hates his life as you will never hear one positive word comes from his mouth and he will never treat you with respect. It is like you are bothering him. I really do feel sorry for his family to have to put up with him. Don’t even try to make a reservation for a truck and he does not know what reservation means and can not guarantee that the truck you «reserved» will be there. Ya, this business and the owner are a joke. I will never recommend this place to anyone, and I grew up here.

The owner is a liar and a scam artist. He tried charging us an extra $ 48 for gas after we filled the tank to where it should be filled. Rather than having the tanks filled all the way– he sends them out with ⁹⁄₁₆ of a tank and then scams customers after they return it and say it was ¹⁄₈ less than it should be– we even gave him our gas receipt and calculated the MPG of the truck. I will never recommend this business to anyone. We are disputing charges with our credit card company.
