American Sleep Medicine

The staff are so, so friendly and they really get to know you and make you feel welcome. It’s not terribly difficult to get an appointment with about a week’s notice. Parking is easy and hours are pretty much convenient.

I had a sleep study done for suspected sleep apnea at American sleep medicine. The process is quite time consuming and complicated, but the staff at the center made things so easy to understand and was very caring.
My doctor recommended that I have a sleep study done because I would stop breathing as I slept. Everyone agrees that that would probably be a pretty dangerous situation. The doctors at the Sleep Medicine Center suggested that I get a CPAP machine. Since using the machine in December, I have never had better sleep in my life. Well, perhaps as a baby.
I can’t think American sleep medicine enough for the kindness they showed me and the professionalism, and what is now knowing that I will not die in my sleep.

My son was referred to ASM for a sleep study and a multi-​level daytime study, because of possible narcolepsy. Before they would do the testing, they made me sign an agreement to pay his deductible upfront, in installments, automatically deducted every two weeks, so I could afford it… although this is not the norm with my insurance company. He really needed the testing done, so I agreed. When we got there, I signed the agreement and they took him back for testing. I was then told by the tech that he would be leaving around 5 am. I asked about the multi-​level study for the next day, and she stated that there was no order for that… I later found out that, not only the PC physician, but also the neurologist, were dumbfounded as to why they did not do all of the testing. After 3 of 6 automatic payments toward the deductible were made, I received a letter from my insurance company with a copay of less than half of what they charged me! I called to see if the automatic payments would stop and when I would receive the reimbursement of the credit they owed me… they tried to tell me that I had only paid one payment, when in fact my bank account showed all three payments had cleared… and refused to stop further automatic payments! The primary care physician referred us to this sleep study because «they don’t charge as much as other sleep studies»…well, you get what you pay for… or NOT!

I was concerned about the cost of the sleep study since I have a very limited income and near retirement. I called the American Sleep Medicine Indianapolis location to get a price quote for my sleep study made by my primary care doctor. Here’s what happened: 1) I consistently called the office for a price quote and was told they needed to contact their corporate office for that information. No one ever called me back with the cost. 2) On the day of the sleep study I called to cancel my appointment due to the lack of not knowing the cost. I explained why I was cancelling when the person answering the phone gives me a quote and their experience of what the cost would be. Based on the that information I went to the appointment. To make a long story short: The price turned out to be three times what I was told; they took my insurance card without blinking — imagine that, they are out of network. I called their office when I received a denial from my insurance company. Again, I was given a story that I need not worry because they were not going to charge me the amount the insurance denial letter showed. A week later I receive a letter from ASM to sign papers to appeal the insurance denial of payment. So far my experience with American Sleep Medicine has shown me their deceit and willingness to take advantage of unsuspecting people. I understand I have an obligation to pay the bill, but not at three times the price I was quoted. I also understand I should have not taken for granted my PC doctor would choose a sleep provider in my network. But to intently misguide a patient about the cost of services is not acceptable.
