Lively Run Dairy is one of the longest operating commercial goat dairies in the country, beginning production in New York State in 1982 and pioneering goat cheese in the American marketplace. The entire Messmer family works to continue the mission of bringing to the Finger Lakes region healthy, sustainable and delicious goat and cow cheeses.

Come visit the farm, get a tour, see our baby goats in the spring, eat some cheesecake, and most importantly — try our cheese!

History

Established in 1982.

Steve and Susanne Messmer acquired Lively Run Dairy in 1982, after moving their family from Germany to the United States. The entire Messmer family fell in love with the goats and their farm. In time, Pete came to be the main cheese maker and Dave came to help with the business elements of the farm.

Lively Run Dairy, a contributing member of the Finger Lakes Cheese Trail, helps to pioneer goat cheese in the American market place. The farm is consistently growing and produces 40,000 pounds of goat cheese annually. Today, the goat milk is supplied by 300 goats making up five herds in the Finger Lakes region. The dairy’s authentic artisanal cheeses remain inspired by the French method and are all small batch made, by hand, on a sprawling 22 acre farm. These delicious cheeses are all-natural, containing no artificial additives or preservatives. Furthermore, we now offer three cow cheeses.
