Erbert and Gerbert’s Sandwich Shop

Decent, rather pricey for how little meat they put on their sandwiches and they really don’t do anything special with them outside of their names. Otherwise it’s just your run of the mill chain sub sandwich really.
If you’re a big fan of Jimmy John’s or Milio’s, this isn’t probably going to be replacing that anytime soon.

If you like only bread sandwiches, this is your place. A lot of bread and little toppings.

Their broccoli and cheddar soup was absolutely disgusting. You could taste the salt and it was very unpleasant. Their sandwiches were good, but not memorable. Not really a place I’d go to eat again.

It’s a new place in the Old Capitol Mall. Decided to check it out. The store is very clean. On the wall there were two big screens detailing the components of each type of sandwiches. It’s nice that by doing so they let the customers know what they are getting. I got the Neptune sandwich (lobster salad mixed with their special dressing then topped it off with lettuce) with the honey wheat bread. I have to say that the lobster salad exceeded my expectation. I was worried that there would be too much dressing and not much of the lobster meat itself. The reality was that they mixed with the right amount of dressing that the salad was delightful in the mouth. There was a moment however that I doubt whether they use the real lobster or they just use the fake crab meat. Well, for the price that I paid, I’m not gonna complain. One thing I didn’t like abt the sandwich is the bread. For some reason when you bite the whole thing, the bread seem to be an outsider… like it did not become one with the lettuce and the lobster salad… maybe the bread was not fresh enough? Or maybe there needs an additional condiment? Dunno. Gonna try there other sandwiches next time.

I went there today, walked up to the counter and waited for a few minutes, with no service. I said «hello» no response, I yelled I want to order still no response. I waited another 10 minutes with no sight of employees. On my way out there they come in from smoking. So I left with food or any customer service.

Great food! Friendly service! And they deliver to about anywhere within reason!
I live out on American Legion Rd and they come out here! It’s only 3.5 miles, but many places cut off at Scott Blvd, so BIG thumbs up!

Iowa City is full of sandwich shops, but I was excited about the opening of a new place to replace Quiznos in the Old Capitol Mall. The folks seemed friendly, even offering me a coupon for their opening event when I saw them in the final stages of getting ready for their grand opening.
Erbert and Gerbert’s is a chain centered in the Midwest offering sandwiches and soups. There are three tiers of sandwiches. There are three types of bread: French, honey wheat, and gluten-​free (extra). But you probably know that.
I think this location is still very new and the staff are still getting used to their new roles. I ordered a half-​sandwich and a cup of soup combination and asked for no mayo on the Narmer (turkey, provolone, lettuce, tomato, mayo, and avocado). I saw that they put mayo on it before it was wrapped up and they were very nice about making me another one. However, on the second try they left out the avocado. I asked them if there was avocado and the sandwich maker said yes without really checking. This effectively downgraded my «Specialty» sandwich to a «Classic» sandwich (50 cent difference on the combination).
The staff were friendly. The cashier was proactive about asking everyone who came after me if they were college students and offering a card for a free soda.
However, I enjoyed the meal. The bread, which was scooped out, was tasty, and the ingredients were fresh. The Minnesota Wild Rice and Chicken was rich and creamy, with lots of wild rice.
The location was also very clean and well lit. There are mostly tall, bar-​counter height tables and chairs. For those that prefer to sit at tables of traditional height, there is only one in the restaurant, but several just outside in the mall.
In short, a nice meal, but there are also plenty of other options in the same price range for a casual bite to eat in downtown Iowa City. I might try again after they have had some time to get into the swing of things.
PROS: clean, fresh ingredients, good location and hours.
CONS: service/​accuracy, other options at same price point.
