Groovy Katz Salon And Spa

I used Groovy Katz for my wedding party’s hair and makeup. I have to say, the services were very professional and the ladies were very personable. We all got exactly what we wanted (my bridesmaids got very low key elements and I was a bit more flashy as the bride).
They actually started on us early because we had gotten there early, and they finished in a timely manner so I could go about my wedding day schedule. Each of the ladies working on us did a wonderful job and gave us tips for how to keep our hair and makeup pristine throughout the day.
The prices were reasonable: Not too expensive, not cheap either. All in all, I had a great experience here, and I’ll probably do all my hair appointments here from now on. I definitely recommend them for a wedding party!

Just visited this salon for a major change in my hair. Cut 3 – 4 inches and had a lot of highlights put in. LOVE my hair! I have gotten several compliments on how natural the color looks and the cut is exactly what I wanted! A bit more than what I would usually pay, but worth it as the cut was exactly what I wanted and the color was perfect!
Already have my appointment scheduled for next time!

Coming to Groovy Katz is always a relaxing treat. I love the Aveda scents, tea, scalp massages, and of course the great hair service. I’ve had several haircuts with Callie and am impressed with her every time. My wavy, thick, frizzy hair can be a challenge, but she always cuts it in a flattering style that allows me to wear it wavy or straightened. It’s also not a place where you feel pressured to purchase extra products, which is appreciated.

My rating is for their waxes and massages. I highly recommend both!

I have to say, I really miss Groovy Katz, and Jacque, who was my regular stylist. If I lived closer to Iowa City these days, I’d commute back just to get my hair cut. I went to Jacque years ago at Zender’s and found her again when she moved to Groovy Katz. She’s great at what she does: I always left the salon happy with my cut, and it always grew out nicely (a true indicator of cut quality, in my book). Years later I still think the name is a little goofy but Groovy Katz is a fantastic salon nonetheless, and by far the best I went to in the Iowa City area.

Part of the excitement of getting my hair done is coming out with beautiful hair. Sadly, this was not the case after my appointment. Sure, my color looked nice, especially since I brought in the formula from another salon. But the style looked so horrid I ran home and spent an hour restyling it.
Let me explain. The lady I had was nice (even though she was a bit sloppy putting color on my hair and couldn’t get much of it off my face– another thing I had to fix at home), and I’m sure she’s a fine stylist. What really pissed me off was that I left this salon looking like crap. After she washed my hair, she never asked me how I typically styled my hair. And then she didn’t try to do my hair curly or straight – no diffuser, straightening or curling iron, or round brush was used. All she did was finger through my hair with a blow dryer. Is a decent style extra or something?! I would find that utterly absurd, but I should have at least been told if that were the case! $ 90 later I felt so ripped off I was quite angry. This has never, EVER happened to me at any other Aveda salon, and I’ve been going to various ones for 7 years. I most certainly will never come back.

pedicures are not worth the money. below average experience for pedicure. poor seating. poor quality pedicure in a small town – place would not survive in a big city, especially with the price they charge. Also, there are hidden charges for hair cuts – put stuff in your hair without telling you and then charge you later. Shady place. There is a filtered review (See filtered section) that also comments about the poor pedicures.

I’ve had my hair cut several times at Groovy Katz, each time by Callie. The service is great, they’re accommodating, you can book appointments online, and I’ve always had zero wait time.
Callie cuts some mean hair. Each time she’s been able to take my descriptions and give me something that always looks stellar. She knows her way around a guy’s head.
Groovy Katz is great. A men’s hair cut will run you about $ 27, which is a bit pricey, but it’s worth it if you love the cut!

I recently switched to this salon and had the great luck of getting an appointment with Callie. She is fun to talk to and is always up for something new. After a few initial cuts I decided that she could be entrusted to give me a short, pixie-​type haircut. She nailed it! Past experience has shown me that not all stylists are comfortable or experienced with short styles for women. Callie is not one of them. The cherry on top is that she does neck trims for free in between my haircuts, which is super!
As for the salon in general, I can say that it has a hip, young vibe to it. Everything is very clean and professional. I especially enjoy the location – right next to Java House. I often walk next door for some coffee and study time after my haircut. So convenient! Overall, don’t let the unusual name scare you off. This place is great and so is Callie.

I heart Groovy Katz and Aveda. This salon has a wonderous location next to the Java House and Core Fitness. Nothing goes with Aveda aromas like the smoothness of anything from the Java House. Very good reason to schedule an appointment and get there early. Not that people watching is the most entertaining thing, although there are always interesting sorts squirreling away on their laptops…
So far my favorite recommended product has been the Aveda facial cleanser OUTER PEACE. Truly not enough can be said about this wonderful treat. My baby laugh lines have faded considerably! Thanks Lindsey! Of course I will tell you why she is fantabulous too.. . wait for it.. .. aside from a really nice relaxing time away from my daily grind. .. .. .. … she massages my scalp — AND is delicate and concerned about my growth challenged hair! Something to be appreciative of when I am begging for the most miniscule of shapely trimming. That honey-​bunny has lots of patience, and killer hair instincts. XOXO Groovyness
