First Class Tutors

I first contacted Lori Johnston two years ago for math support for my daughter. Lori met with us and collected information concerning the curriculum for the class as well as the specific textbook used. Lori also took the time to understand my daughter’s learning style and her challenges in the individual subject area. She sent an amazing tutor to our home, and saved our family from total math despair.
We have since used Lori for math, science and ACT prep. Lori’s tutor Maury went far beyond the call of duty last year when my daughter enrolled in an online Trigonometry class that provided no direct instruction. Maury prepared lesson plans and supplemental materials. He was able to break down concepts and explain the material so that my daughter could manage the class. She received an A. We are so grateful for Maury’s dedication.
Lori’s tutors are always remarkably responsive and incredibly well versed in their subject areas. I have tried other services and online sites — they simply cannot compare.

I contacted First Class Tutors for biology help for my daughter. Her tutor, Sahar, was awesome! A UCLA pre-​med student, she was patient, willing and able to try different teaching styles to meet my daughter’s needs, and easy to get ahold of and communicate with. If we could have hired Sahar independently, we would have.
Unfortunately, the owner was not as easy to work with. Without meeting me or my daughter, she was extremely opinionated and judgmental about decisions I had made related to school. That didn’t matter too much since she wasn’t my daughter’s tutor. What ended our association with First Class Tutors was lack of clarity regarding make up sessions. We had rescheduled a couple sessions previously with no problems at all. We worked them out directly with Sahar to accommodate her schedule and ours, and Sahar was in communication with Lori. My reading of our contract was that we were able to reschedule appointments sessions if necessary and since we had done it, I had no reason to think that was inaccurate. Lori then contacted me and told me sessions could not be rescheduled and we would have to pay for sessions that had already been cancelled and Sahar and I were in the process of rescheduling. When we were unable to resolve this difference, I terminated my contract. I was then told I owed for the coming month and for the previously missed sessions. And if I didn’t pay, the company would pursue legal action. So I opted to pay the amount due and continue with the month of tutoring I had to pay for before being able to end our contract. I emailed Lori to let her know, mailed my check, and then received an email from Lori stating that Sahar no longer wished to work with us and Lori would return my check. Sigh. What a pain in the rear.
Overall, I gave First Class Tutors 2 stars because Sahar was great. My daughter’s bio grade did not improve, but that was her own doing, not Sahar’s. The owner, however, was difficult to deal with and I would never recommend her company to anyone. She needs to learn some people skills.

My son was not doing well in chemistry and pre-​calculus so a friend referred us to First Class Tutors. The day after I called, our tutor, Taylor, arrived. He has his degree in bio-​chemistry so was able to help my son in both subjects. He was patient and explained the material in a way my son could understand. He even said, «I wish my teacher explained things like this.»
Taylor was flexible in working with our baseball schedule. As it turns out, several students from Beckman use First Class Tutors. They have been a great help to our community of athletes and their crazy schedules.
My son ended up with an A in chemistry and B+ in pre-​calculus. We are more than happy with their service and will call again in the Fall.
