History
Established in 1948.
Industrial Metal Supply was founded as a scrap and surplus business back in 1948 in Burbank, CA. Norman and Sally Sherman delivered metal out of the back end of their 1947 Pontiac station wagon that served as their pick-up truck by day and the family vehicle in the evening. Today IMS, which is still family-owned, has grown to five locations, over 260 employees, 40 trucks and more than 400,000 square feet of warehouse space in Southern California and Arizona.
Company employees pride themselves on their commitment and ability to be flexible in order to meet our customer’s needs. Whether it’s information or special material handling, our employees go out of their way to service our customer’s requests.

Business Owner
Norman Sherman opened his scrap and surplus business in 1948 in Burbank, California. He, along with his wife Sally, worked out of the back end of their 1947 Pontiac station wagon that served as the first delivery vehicle by day & the family car by night.
Over the years market demand required a second facility be opened & in 1989 Norm and Sally’s son Neil opened a second IMS branch in Irvine. In 1995 Neil opened the San Diego branch.
In August of 2000, IMS ventured interstate, into Arizona, acquiring a Phoenix-based company named Capitol Metals which later changed it’s name to Industrial Metal Supply Co.
In 2002 the Burbank facility upgraded to over 14,000 sq ft of retail & 120,000 square feet of warehouse along with many new items to choose from.
In 2006, IMS opens in Riverside to address the demands from the rapidly growing number of businesses in the Inland Empire. With over 70,000 sq ft, this branch is the area’s largest retail outlet for metals.
In 2012 IMS opened in Tucson.
