Description

Specialties

As a traditional martial art under the guidance of an old-world Grandmaster, Oom Yung Doe specializes in developing the whole person (mind, body, and spirit). We start with the person’s current abilities and challenges and help them achieve their full potential. For adults this can mean regaining what age and a sedentary lifestyle have depleted, overcoming injuries and ailments, creating a sharper mind, developing patience and serenity. For the youth, this can mean self-confidence, strength, power, speed, body control, and respect for self and others. For all, it means great self-defense skills.

We are unique in the area because we employ traditional methodology (refined for centuries) and we teach 8 styles of martial arts, which synergistically propel development.

History

Established in 1975.

Oom Yung martial arts follow the legend that Bagwa was the founder of the our line of martial arts about 1500 to 2000 years ago.

Our grandmaster, «Iron» Kim, trained for decades under his grandmaster in the Yin Yang style within that original line. After achieving the master level, Iron” Kim sought out and trained with the top seven masters throughout East Asia. Becoming a master of each of their styles, Grandmaster crafted a single style from the eight dominant East Asian martial arts, which he called Oom Yung (the Korean words for Yin Yang).

Grandmaster «Iron» Kim brought the Oom Yung Doe style to the United States in the mid-seventies. We’ve been in the Seattle area for more than 30 years, having taught thousands of students under the direction of a true grandmaster.

Meet the Business Owner

Derek H.

Business Owner

Derek arrived at martial arts as a middle-aged business person. With more than 20 years in technology management and substantial international business experience, he had found that age, frequent business travel, and a sedentary lifestyle had taken its toll on his health. A physician friend recommended that Derek’s younger sons train at Oom Yung Doe. It was there, watching his boys train, that Derek saw the deep benefits for adults.

Within a couple of years of committed training a serious back condition was resolved, he lost 50 pounds, and reversed his type 2 diabetes, high blood pressure, and high cholesterol. By the time Derek had earned his black belt, he was determined to help others experience the same kind of benefits to increase their quality of life and longevity.

In 2011, Derek opened up the Issaquah school of Oom Yung Doe. He and his team work diligently to improve the lives of their students, developing and harmonizing mind/body/spirit through traditional martial arts.
