FoMu

One of my favorite ice cream parlors. Fun flavors and yummy vegan ice cream that even dairy lovers will devour. The ice creams definitely have a coconut flavor to it as many are coconut based. The consistency is rather good and I don’t miss the milk/​cream at all. Favorites so far are the strawerry and malted chocolate.

I developed lactose intolerance as an adult, and while some things are okay (like most cheese, since the lactose is removed when it’s skimmed), ice cream and whipped cream doom me to a day of… serious discomfort. A vegan friend told me about FoMu and since their JP location is near, I went the next time I was in the neighborhood. I have tried other vegan «ice creams» before and some of them are pretty good, but this tastes like the real thing, has a lovely texture, no aftertaste, and comes in a large variety of flavors. You can even have a sundae with hot fudge and vegan whip (cream of coconut whipped with sugar and a little tapioca so it stays fluffy). I thought that I would never have one of my favorite comfort foods — a coffee hot fudge sundae — again, but now I can!
The downside is that it’s pricey. In the store, $ 8, in some markets that carry it, closer to $ 10, but there are other so-​called «premium» ice creams that cost the same. So you may not want to serve it at a big party with friends who can digest dairy, but if you are entertaining somebody who you know is vegan or lactose-​intolerant, it will be very well received!
The store in JP is basic, very clean, and with a friendly staff who are happy to answer questions regarding ingredients and how things are made. The chocolate pudding or chocolate peppermint cookie never last long in this house, and the fall pumpkin flavor will make you remember why there is now a craze for all things pumpkin. If you’re going to take it home for later, some of the flavors are very dense and freeze harder than regular ice cream, but a little patience or a warm towel around the pint will take care of that.

Absolutely the best ice cream in town, trust me ! Anyone who tried it knows. Rum and raisins and grape nut are my favorite, but too many to list here and all REAL.

This place is a dairy free ice cream joint! Has some interesting flavors like FoMu which is a mix of blueberry, sweet potato (so good, but has marshmallows in it), and pumpkin caramel which sold it for me.
I bought a pint during the cold weather and it came out to be about 8 bucks? Not bad I guess but it is more pricey than what you would get in a grocery store of 5 or less. But I do appreciate the nice staff and time they put into helping you find the ice cream flavor you like. The flavors are all good and they’re flavors you can’t find in normal grocery stores. So if you feel a little adventurous, try this place out! Theres street parking and the shop takes card for those that do not carry cash.

All of their ice creams are made with coconut milk and are plant-​based and allergy-​friendly. They offer a nice variety of flavors, including classic and seasonal flavors. The employees were really nice about letting us try some samples before ordering. I got the Purple Mu (berries and white chocolate chips), since it was a unique flavor, along with Cake & Batter, which was pretty good as well. The overall ice cream flavor is definitely distinguishable from ice cream made with dairy, but it’s a nice alternative!

We had the espresso and the dark chocolate ice creams, and both were delicious. There was nothing ‘weird’ about the texture or flavor, and I would never have picked out the coconut undertone. The guy behind the counter was exceptionally friendly and helpful, and he even let us use the bathroom in the store, which was unusual in the neighborhood. I thought it was a great place overall and would return.

Fomu uses 100% plant based ingredients (according to their website). So if you crave ice cream but have a problem with dairy, this is probably a nice option.
They have a good selection of interesting flavors, and they let you try them so you can make a good choice. You can also mix and match flavors. I tried 3 when I was there, and they were all good, though they all have an underlying taste in common, which I assume is the coconut milk. It tastes good to me, but don’t expect it to taste like normal ice cream.
The staff was friendly and had no problem giving us a couple of samples.
It’s pricey for ice cream. Smalls, which are about one normal scoop of ice cream, are a little over $ 4. If you’re into supporting locally sourced, non GMO food then you might be willing to pay a little extra than normal. I don’t have a problem with dairy, so it definitely wouldn’t be my go-​to for ice cream. It’s good enough, however, that if I’m walking by and want to have something out of the ordinary, I would stop in again to try some of their other flavors.

This might just be… the best ice cream I’ve had in my life.
The flavors are all very unique, but not so unique that taste is sacrificed. Each scoop we had was creamy, true to its name, but then taken to another level. I want to go back already.

* Mud Pie
* Blueberry pie
* Avocado

Other notes: Serving sizes were decent/​on the larger side (esp if you get a free wafer cone) and prices were justified.

Let me start by addressing the coconut milk taste that many people seem not to like. I was never a coconut fan before going Paleo and developing a strong intolerance for dairy. I am always surprised by how subtle REAL coconut milk tastes! I cook primarily with coconut oil as well and again, with most foods, the taste is super subtle. Try popping some white popcorn in coconut oil and adding some salt… bomb!!!
Back to Fomu… so yeah… I wanted to find an ice cream alternative for my occasional craving. I have only tried 3 flavors:
1. Maple Bourbon Walnut (my FAV!!!)
2. Lavender: nice and refreshing in the summer and recently…
3. Chocolate pudding
Now I am not a big time chocoholic, especially when it is really rich but the Choco Pudding blew me away. It was SOOOO creamy and reminded me of Jello pudding cups and pudding pops from back in the day (oh Mr. Cosby…) I tried it on a gluten free cone… scrumptious.
Don’t sleep on this place… they also give you all the samples you want. But if you do need to try EVERY flavor, at least let people who know what they want go in between your tastings! LoL
Oh.I also tried a slice of lemon lavender cake as I love lemon cake but «blech»… It was super dry and WAAAAY too sweet for me.

I can’t believe I never knew this place was here! I just read about it in edible boston magazine and made a point to check it out for its creative favors. WOW!!! I tried the avocado as well as the lavendar ice creams (all are made with coconut milk) both were unbelievable!!! Definitely my new favorite place. Highly highly recommend you check this place out!

How can vegan ice-​cream taste this good? If you like coconut milk, then you have to try the ice-​cream here. They use coconut milk as their base, but it tastes like regular ice-​cream!
Dairy can be good for you because it has important protein, fat, and nutrients. However, it depends on whether dairy comes from grass fed or pasture raised cows because studies show that dairy from grass fed cows are healthier to consume. Ultimately, the quality of the dairy affects its nutritional value. Sometimes that is out of your control. Also, majority of the people is lactose intolerant or allergic to dairy.
Don’t get me wrong, I have nothing against dairy, but my gastrointestinal system does! It’s unfortunate to be slightly lactose intolerant because I love all things dairy and I still eat dairy products when I am courageous enough to deal with the consequences. If there is an alternative option of dairy products, I will definitely give it a try!
My friend said I have to try this place and I instantly grew fond of it! I tried their espresso bean and mango habanero and I ended up ordering a medium cup of mango habanero. It was more than enough! The ice-​cream here is super creamy. I like how there is a kick at the end of each time I was eating the mango habanero icecream. If you like tropical and spicy food, I would definitely recommend it! It is perfect for the summer. I also loved their espresso bean because I am personally a fan of coffee flavored ice-​cream. I will definitely get that next time I come here!

Coconut ice cream with interesting flavors like salted caramel, key lime, and mango habanero in addition to all the standards. Really delicious.
In addition to the ice cream they have baked goods and drinks.
Other plusses: 1. They have kid sized options 2. Lots of seating 3. All of their serving dishes and utensils are compostable.

FoMu is my idea of heaven! Here’s the thing, people — far more individuals are lactose intolerant or have a dairy sensitivity than will admit/​realize. If you’re always gassy after eating dairy, uh, hello — it probably means your body is not processing it properly. If you have seasonal allergies or sinus issues, avoiding dairy can go a long way in helping many people feel better. However, the issue often is that dairy is easily accessible and often a bit difficult to replace well. I won’t lie — there is no good replacement for butter! However, well-​made coconut milk ice cream is a very good replacement for ice cream.
When my niece mentioned this place to me, my immediate question is, «When do we go?!?» After our lovely dinner at Redd’s in Rozzie, we made our way over to JP. I should have sampled more flavors, but I didn’t want to be one of those people who takes a half-​hour to make a decision, and samples one of everything! I ended up with two scoops — one of salted caramel, the other purple mu (berries and white chocolate chips). With purple mu, the berry flavor was so strong that I really couldn’t even tell that it wasn’t «regular» ice cream.
They also offer gluten-​free cones, which is super awesome, and all of their toppings are of the less-​evil kind (i.e. not highly processed sprinkles made of corn syrup and fake colors).
FoMu also has a variety of baked goods, many of which are gluten-​free (rejoice!!!). Prices are a tad high, but those of us with special diets are accustomed to that. I picked up a package of small sugar cookie/​Nutella sandwiches, which I enjoyed the next day — they weren’t too crazy sweet, which I appreciated.
Basically, if I lived nearby, I’d be a regular! If you haven’t already, I urge you to try this place out!

I’m here now. This is the best ice cream I can remember having — and I love local dairy. Fair warning, though, to enjoy it as much as I have, you have to love coconut. The ice creams are coconut cream based and it’s a beautiful marriage. The first flavor I tried was avocado (!). I proceeded to taste nearly every flavor and then finally settled on purple mū, cherry amaretto, avocado, and (plain) peanut butter. Oh, glory!
I had a pretty discouraging day. The attendant, Brooke, was friendly and accommodating. Don’t skip this spot if you’re in the mood for a sweet-​tooth comfort.

Coming to FOMU was the most hipster thing I’ve ever done — a proud accomplishment, I must say. As everyone else has mentioned, the ice cream is made from coconut milk. That being said, if you want to try this place out, but hate coconut and are thinking, «I mean… how coconutty can it actually taste?»… Let me bring you the bad news: you DEFINITELY taste the coconut… especially in the after taste. I love coconut, so this wasn’t a problem for me. I got sweet lavendar (small ~$ 4 – 5) and it was a huge portion so don’t opt for a larger size than the small, unless you LOVE LOVE LOVE icecream, then go for it! The sweet lavendar was really delicious and I would definitely get it again. One downside of FOMU was that the icecream seemed to melt faster than normal ice cream. I’m not sure if it’s due to the hot weather or the fact that it’s made from a coconut-​milk base, but it started melting as soon as they poured it into my ‘made-​from-​recycled-​material’ cup.
If you are anything-​intolerant, I would highly recommend FOMU. If you are exploratory and want to try weird flavors, you should try out FOMU, as well. For the rest of you, stick to your ben&jerrys.

Yeah, this is the place to enjoy Dairy-​Free Ice cream! There are different flavors to choose from. I bought a cake for my brother’s birthday: a soy free classic cake, coconut based vanilla and chocolate. It was so delicious. Everyone in my family loved it. About 4 people are lactose intolerant in my family, including me, and we were able to eat it without any concerns.
To top it off, people who work there are down to earth and knowledgeable about what they make and sell.
I am glad this place exist, especially for people who love frozen desserts but can’t eat/​drink dairy.

I love Fomu. I am mostly lactose intolerant, but I love ice cream. This place is AMAZING.
My favorite flavor is Magic Bar, which is basically like if you chopped up a 7-​layer bar and put it in chocolate ice cream. Another favorite is the Green smoothie, which starts with avocado ice cream (so it’s basically healthy, right?)
Some of my friends don’t like the coconutty-​ness of some of the flavors — but they also have nut-​based flavors that are delicious as well! I also had a slice of vegan banoffee pie the other day, and it was delicious.

I don’t have a dairy intolerance, nor am I vegan, but after reading about FoMu’s inventive flavors, I decided that I had to try some. I really wanted the mango habanero, but I guess they no longer carry it. So.Sad. I tried the sweet lavender, which to me tasted more like coconut with a hint of lavender, and the avocado, which tasted surprisingly like fresh, ripe avocados… with a hint of coconut. It seems like that coconut flavor comes through in all of their coconut-​based ice creams. I ended up with a scoop of the chocolate mint cookie or something, I can’t remember the official name. I’m assuming this was one of the nut-​based flavors, because I finally didn’t taste coconut. In fact, this one tastes just like a Thin Mint cookie. Definitely a good place to go if you don’t do regular ice cream or if you’re into non-​traditional flavors with a hint of coconut.

Plant based ice cream awesomeness! Going dairy free months ago has been a rough road in the ice cream department UNTIL NOW! Yes, the trek up to Jamaica Plain is well worth it & taking the sweet indulgence home to stock up my freezer, I’m like a 5yr old so excited!
The Coconut Magic Bar, Peanut butter & Mint Chip are out of this world yummy! Even waffle cones made by plant based love! The samples are generous & unlimited, oh yeah. Oh, I almost forgot to mention that the Whole Foods in Providence carries FoMu, your welcome.
Not that you need anymore reasons to check out FoMu but the counter staff were super nice!

I’m not sure if this is healthy, but its amazing. If it is healthy, they should advertise that more – even saying 10% less fat than grocery store ice cream (or the ice cream across the street *cough* jp licks *cough*). I don’t remember seeing anything in store about it.
I tried so many flavors and most were great – the ones I thought I might not like I didn’t, so no surprise there. I ended up getting half peanut butter and half chocolate fudge (or something similar) with peanut butter cookies on top. Just chocolate would have been too much because it’s so rich.
I also got a container of coconut bar something to go and it’s fantastic too. Maybe my favorite for take away because it’s great for a little treat, but it would be easy to overdo it.
Having said that twice now maybe their ice cream is the best because I never want too much of it.
