I checked out this store yesterday afternoon. The selection’s decent for a pretty small space. If only I’d been able to get to any of it– the staff and friends were engrossed in a game of «Magic», playing on a folding table that took up half the floor space, and blocked off whole walls of comics. I managed to find a title worth picking up, and had to interrupt the game and ask several times: «Excuse me– can someone sell this to me?» As I was leaving, a gentleman came in and asked The Gathering whether the store was open. The employee’s reply: «That’s what the sign says».
Maybe the staff is usually pleasant /​helpful /​not physically blocking their own inventory. I’m not itching to come back and find out.

If we lived in High Fidelity, this place would be Championship Vinyl. They have a good selection of games and comics, but whenever I’ve gone the staff has been less than willing to stop talking to a friend to help me. Like under-​appreciated philosophers… But, since I can buy board games for cheaper on Amazon, I’ve decided to bypass the crappy service vibe and buy them online.

Awesome! They have a terrific variety and the people who work there have actually PLAYED most of the games. Which means the recommendations you get will be honest and helpful. I’m so glad this store exists in JP!!!

Place isn’t even expensive either. I am happy that I found a nerd hangout in JP. So happy.

I live in Weymouth, yet I purchase all my comics here. My son and I participate in the JP Comics Open Forum held every few weeks. We have only met and dealt with the owner, Paul and find him to be quite personable, fair, genuine and quite approachable. He is not only quite knowlagable about comics, good with adults and teenagers like my son, but is also very encouraging to the younger children who wish to discuss and draw comics with the rest of the forum participants.
The store is always bright, clean and well organized. I have neen following the most popular of the new 52 and if I miss an issue, Paul will order it for me or put aside the issues that I remember to ask for.
$$? Why $$? The average comic costs $ 3.99. There are many for $ 2.99 and the store has a $ 1 box (sometimes 2 or 3) and my son leaves with many comics for his $ 20 allowance.

runs the forums and if you want notification of when they are being held, contact him and he will let you know when they are on. Ian is a wonderful artist and comic book publisher. The forum is open to all interested in comics, no matter how old, knowledgable or artistic they are.

A year and a half later, I found myself in the area again and I’ve got to say that this modest little store has shaped up very, VERY nicely. I still haven’t made a purchase as it’s not my local comics or gaming hookup and my local meets my needs, but I can’t help but marvel at how well this place stocks their very minimal square footage without making the place feel crammed, AND leaving space for a few gaming tables. This store is a nothing short of AMAZING in terms of interior design.
Some of the nicer looking comic stores I’ve seen have managed to look good, but with the tradeoff being that they don’t actually have much PRODUCT. This little place has a selection of specialty board games just as good and a selection of graphic novels NEARLY as good as my local fix (Double Midnight comics in Manchester NH), and Double Midnight is easily DOUBLE THE SIZE.
As my reading and gaming needs are taken care of at my local store, I don’t know that JP Comics & Games has anything I need as a highly infrequent visitor, but even so I am quite impressed. For serving the local clientele, I think this place looks like one of the better comic /​gaming stores I’ve seen in the metropolitan Boston area (being one of very few with gaming space being a big perk on that front).

Stumbled in to JP Comics and Games last week to kill some time while waiting for some takeout. The employee/​owner (not sure) was quite rude to my husband when he inquired about selling old comics. The guy responded by saying «Don’t ever ask a comic store if they will buy anything– I have had people come in here and offer to sell me comics for $ 20 and in turn I go on eBay and sell them for $ 10,000. I’ve done this so many time I was able to buy a house in Maine, people are stupid and if they don’t do the research I’m happy to take advantage of their stupidity.»
WHAT? To openly admit to strangers that you have been scamming people who come into the store is a whole new level of ignorance that I have never witnessed before.
So beware, if you are trying to make a few extra bucks by selling old comics, do your research and don’t try to do it here. Because apparently, there are some pretty dishonest people working here.

Great place to play Magic. Currently two nights are supported (Monday for constructed and FNM for Booster Draft). The shop is small which has both advantages and disadvantages when it comes to gaming. The staff keeps the games moving and your never confused who your to play next due to its size.
The shop is laid out smartly with every wall well stocked with comics and games. I’ll be going back.

I love this place and the 2 guys that work it are both knowledgeable and friendly. I’ve recently become a Marvel geek and these guys have set me happily on my path.
I wish they had some sort of discount like some of the other comic stores in the Boston area… Harrison’s does 10% off when you buy 10+ comics for example. But I don’t really mind supporting the local store regardless.

I happened upon my own review, and considering the fact that I“m there 1 – 2 nights a week, I actually felt guilty not giving Mike and Paul 5 stars.
Come by some night and play some games!

I’m not really a ‘comic book person’ but I like popping into local businesses and exploring. The store is clean, bright, and well organized. There’s a giant wall of comic books on one side and a moderate collection of games on the other.
I do wish they played some music in the store. Whenever I’ve been in it’s been pin-​drop silent and that makes me a little nervous and less likely to stay and browse. Personally, I’d also like to see some more ‘brain game’ kind of books and puzzles which are more up my alley, but that’s okay if that’s not what they’re going for.

The guys who run this place are friendly, knowledgeable and most importantly they care about what they sell.
I’ve picked up some stuff that I’ve wanted and even more based on recommendations.
They’ve also avoided the number one pitfall of small comic shops; a holier than thou attitude.

The guys who run the place are awesome, and ballsy to open a small, niche store in this economy. Kudos to them! The inventory is small, but steadily growing. They have no problem ordering something they don’t have. The place is also small, but clean and inviting. It’s nice to have store like this that is not in Cambridge or in Boston proper. They are a welcome addition to Centre St. They will certainly get my business.

I’m happy to have a comic store in JP, but this one has a limited selection, and is more focused on games than comics.
They run out of stuff a lot, and I’ve given up on trying. Go to Comicazi in Davis Square instead.

**OK, I started this thing with a bit of a ‘tude and gave JP Comics and Games 2 stars! I got some flack for being hyperbolic, and deservedly so. So, to come back at it I’ll incorporate some modifications, denoted by these ** while leaving the original narrative intact.**
Starting a business when the economy is collapsing is a bold venture. Must take the guile of a Klingon. Especially a comic book shop. So Ka-​plagh to the boldness and vision.
The store is nicely laid out. There were kids in there, playing intellectually worthwhile games with their dads. I like seeing things like that. My dad used to play games with me. But they were more about how to actually survive than something with cards and little figures. But I digress. Good job with the supportive family vibe.
The shelves were lined neatly with a good selection of current titles. Not like Newbury Comics which isn’t really a comic store. Unless you like your comics pre-​antiqued by greasy Berklee students or you want to buy a talking bottle opener or bobble head of some sports guy I never heard of.
So, so far, so good. But, something is on my mind. I used to shop at Golden Apple in LA. In fact, they used to babysit my Malamute when I went to see a new movie in the middle of the day, and then maybe go get a few beers by myself at the Faultline before 3pm. I’d come back all sweaty and buzzed, pick up the dog and maybe buy one issue of Iron Man as a token gesture. I used to be a regular at Forbidden Planet when I was at the Coop in NYC, occasionally closing the place for a beer and weed party in the basement. They had boxes of Ultraman dolls stacked as high as the ceiling down there. Ooo riding the fixed gear bicycle back home over the Brooklyn Bridge was scary. It was years ago. I wasn’t as much of a hipster as it sounds, either. I digress again… Comics… yes: even Harrison’s, in Salem of all places (possibly the best comic store in the world for some reason) provided me with a sense of belonging and camaraderie– albeit it from a guy with strange space issues and an intense interest in my shiny belt-​buckle.
At the heart of a good review or a bad review from me is usually the respect I’m afforded by the gatekeepers of a goods and/​or service provider. Why? I am the audience. And the world is too full of irreverent people who have no idea what is going on in the little corners and alleys near the places they find secure.
**I write my reviews from a place of how I’m treated more than what the quality of the service or product is. I can admit it, I present from my EQ as opposed to IQ.**
The charming gentleman behind the counter (apparently an owner) was introduced to me by a friend as a fellow motorcycle enthusiast. A possible jumping off point for some kind of ongoing camaraderie and relationship as a customer. But no. He dissed my bike. He made fun of the retro-​bobber Harley I put together myself. Then when he told he he had a Triumph Bonneville (a bike I want to add to my stable) that was for sale, I momentarily overlooked the unnecessary slag on my motorbike, told him I admired his choice in cycle, and asked if he was looking for a buyer. He promptly, and in an indignant fashion informed me that he had people lined up in New York State to buy the bike. Like I was an ass for asking him if he was looking for a buyer for a bike he just told me was for sale.
I don’t come into your store and tell you that your cash register isn’t cool or scoff at you when you suggest JUSTICE LEAGUE: THE RISE OF ARSENAL #3.
My review isn’t based on whether I can find a title I’m looking for, or talk geek with the shopkeep. It’s based on the fact that I’ve spent untold thousands of dollars on comic books and will probably continue to do so. From people who DON’T DISS MY BIKE in the first 5 minutes of meeting me.
**OK, so that’s how I left it. I guess it’s a little harsh. I don’t imagine the people at JP Comics are going to have an after hours shit show party in their basement with me. I’m a little old for that anyway. But the comic shop is a great addition to the ‘hood, and I wish them all the luck. Geek power! Oh, BTW, not possible to get a 5 here unless you’re Forbidden Planet. When I barfed in their basement, they all thought it was funny… they remain that by which all other comic shops are judged.**

After my first visit here, my husband commented, «for the first time ever, you are a bigger nerd than me.»
That alone warrants 5 stars, but it’s also a fabulous place and a great addition to the neighborhood. The guys working there are super nice and really know their stuff.

I pretty much agree with all the other reviews.
The one thing that is missing (although I though I saw one) is comics/​graphic novels that don’t involve superheros.

This store is already great and will only get better. I can’t speak to the comics side of things, but their selection of board games is fantastic (Power Grid, Blokus, Cataan and Carcassonne, etc). The owners clearly know a ton about the games theyre selling, but aren’t stuffy/​huffy about it. No Simpson’s ‘comic book guy’ here! They’re also happy to order things you want that they don’t have in stock yet, so if your board game taste runs really esoteric, put ‘em on the hunt. Or if you’re just hunting for a new board game to play next time your friends come over for some drinking and gaming, i’m sure they can steer you in the right direction

Just dropped in today after noticing that this place opened right by my house, super excited to have a place to buy comics that is down the street.
Their comic selection is reasonable considering they are brand new. I wish they had some indie comics, but it’s a pretty small store. Unfortunately, It looks like I’ll still mainly be going to other random non-​local places. They do have a good selection of marvel, DC, vertigo, etc. So if that’s your bag, it’s a great place to go.
The guy whose name I forgot was really helpful (big sideburns). He offered me some suggestions for comic books, as I’m not as into the superhero thing and therefor am not as educated about the authors. So I plan to stop in later in the week when they hopefully have Issue #1 of said suggestion. He was in general super helpful and extremely knowledgeable about the products he had on the shelf.
We got into a pretty in-​depth discussion on World of Warcraft online vs board game. He mentioned they are teaching some of the games in the store and to stop by, which is really cool. I’m going to assume this is what the table in the center is for. The board game selection in general is pretty rocking and something I’m going to keep in mind when christmas time rolls around.
All in all the store seems really promising. I would give it 5 stars if it had a bigger comics selection.
