Food taste was good. I ordered pongal and when I received it, there was a hair strand in the food. They took it back and gave me other plate which also had hair. Then for the 3rdtime, they have a plate of pongal like real cold one. When asked about it there was no apology or no concern of serving that kind of food. He just took it and microwaved it and gave it to me. Not going back here No hygienic in the kitchen. No gloves or hair caps.

Ordered butter Mysore masala for earlylunch. Dosa was average at best; spilling out of the plate folded over. It was a little too thick and the masala was burnt. Worst part is that I have been reeling in stomach pain for eight hours. Bad experience overall.

We ordered food at 7PM and were told it would take 40 minutes. The food arrived, stone cold, at 9PM after eight calls. They do not tell you the truth about where the food is. It is the last time I will ever home deliver from Dosa Hut.

I want to respond to the reviewer who said she got food poisoning. I’m not denying her experience, but I have to say, South Indian food is definitely intense on the stomach… lots of heavy duty spices, fried foods, lots of fiber, beans in everything, raw onions, etc. It can«clean» you out pretty heavily, but that is not always indicative of food poisoning. It isn’t the world’s most sanitary restaurant, true, but I personally just plan on spending quality time in the bathroom anyway after eating at Dosa Hut or eating South Indian food in general, especially since it’s so good and the portions so plentiful and cheap, it’s very easy to overeat here! Sorry if that was TMI. But, caveat emptor. Be aware that yes, especially if you eat a lot of the sambar which is extremely spicy/beany, it can have a highly«cleansing» effect similar to the reputation of spicy Mexican food. That’s why I used to go there when I had a cold, because it also cleans your sinuses out big time! That said, I miss this place terribly. I used to live close by and ate here regularly. I’ve had dosas all over the place, including in the East Village in NYC, the Indian restaurants in Boston and yes, in India. And a few of the places here in Little India JC as well. These are totally amazing. Their ownership changed a few years ago, and it did change the quality slightly, but not enough to merit changing restaurants for me, it still is pretty awesome. I love how huge the servings are if you get the combo platters, which are an incredible deal. I always have leftover pongal, upma, vada, rasam and more for days. I don’t really love uttapam so I’m not judging based on that. They have free wifi here(not that I’d really want to hang out after eating), unlimited free sambar which is some of the best I’ve ever had(with lots of pumpkin, drumstick, and cucumber) and it’s nice to know that everything on the menu is vegetarian. For a change of pace we sometimes like the spring or cheese dosas, which are a little more fast food-like with kind of generic yellow cheese, but still delicious… almost like a South Indian mac and cheese feeling. The chaat is usually too sweet for my taste. The curries are incredible. Definitely get a lassi and some chai tea, which is very strong and if I remember correctly, unsweetened. Their condiments are also incredible and some of the most flavorful I’ve ever had. We used to love to get idli here for brunch too. They have all kinds of idli… fried, ghee idli(in clarified butter), etc. One caveat. DONOT get takeout here. The takeout service has always been terrible. It is always very late arriving, things are usually spilled and leaking all over the place(like literally pouring into the bag), containers not sealed properly, and service not always friendly. In addition, the food is always cold by the time you get it, dosas soggy etc. I have had takeout before here numerous times and I don’t know why I kept doing it… it’s a completely different experience from buying the food onsite. Keep in mind they technically also charge for takeout bags and containers if you get more than a few of them, but that’s not a huge deal for me as they really do give you so many separate dishes in a combo platter, it’s not a typical doggie bag. I wish they would switch to more earth-friendly serving and takeout containers. They use a lot of styrofoam here! They may also have a charge minimum, but I’m not sure what it is. That is pretty common all over JC.

I really want to give this place 5 stars because it tastes really good, but I can’t because I got food poisoning 3 times here… What’s that saying? Fool me once, shame on you; fool me twice, shame on me; fool me thrice; I’m an idiot? This suggests that they are more unsanitary than the average restaurant in the NYC area… which is really saying something. I will say that the food here is awesome tasting and it is cheap(I guess you get what you pay for)…but if you don’t have a hardened stomach because you grew up in the United States(and not India), be prepared to spend some quality time in the bathroom. Edit: I’ve only had the Masala Dosa from Dosa Hut(and other various relatively mild Dosas), so I haven’t had really spicy food here. I tend to eat a lot of spicy food in general — I am 99% sure that I got food poisoning here though!

–Good if you’re okay with consuming low quality food –Have observed people getting sick after eating from here, which only tells me that probably nothing is handled with cleanliness and care. –While they may have the name, they certainly don’t have the quality or the service –There are a ton of other places to get your Dosa fix better than this place.

I ordered pav bhaji dosa and I was served simple masala dosa. They charged me the price of pav bhaji dosa. I am very disappointed as I cannot even go back and complain because all this happened during closing hours. P. S. This review is based on one time experience.

I went here yesterday cause I was craving dosa’s and it was worth it! I had the onion masala dosa and it was so good. True, authentic indian flavors. The portions are huge, enough for 2 people and they cost anywhere between $ 5 and $ 15, which is not bad at all. I also tried the mango lassi, which was good as well. Definitely check this place out if you’re in the mood for good dosa’s.

We’ve ordered online form this place twice and each time they were no shows. When you call, the people that answer the phone seem uneducated and very rude. They blame their delivery problems on EatStreet( Unilocal’s online ordering partner) but I think it’s probably because they are not very IT savvy(yeah, I know. an Indian restaurant not knowing how to use a computer is hard to believe but I found one). They kept telling me our driver was(10−15m) away which were all lies since they later told me they couldn’t get their driver to return their calls. As a side note, I’ve eaten at this place before. The dosas are very average and I only ordered today because they offer delivery and online ordering. Otherwise, I would never even think of it. Why eat here when there are so many other places on Newark Ave that don’t stink and employ workers that have at least an high school education and know how to talk to customers?

Waited for over 90 minutes for my order and still no sign of my food. Made multiple calls to the restaurant to find where my food is and they couldn’t give me an update but just made me run around. The food never made it. The only reason I order from this place is because it has home delivery even though their dosas are just AVERAGE. Lesson learnt, NEVERAGAIN!

Two stars for dahi vada only. The uttapam is very thick and tasteless. They charge 20% mandatory tip, delivery charge for take out. Not worth it. Dosa house is far better

I walked in and felt I had returned to India! Incense was burning in front of a shrine to Ganesh — the Elephant God. I have been searching for a «real» Masala Dosa since I left India more than 15 years ago. I was not disappointed! The dosa itself was crispy, hot, and flavorful. The potato and spice filling was tasty and the sambal and both chutneys(coconut and something spicy) that accompanied the Dosa complimented it very well. I also ordered chai and it, too, was hot, spicy and delicious. Street parking was impossible! I ended up paying $ 3 to park but it was worth it for the opportunity to go back to India! 4 stars only because of the difficulty in getting to the place. The food deserves 5 stars!

Number 1 in unhygienic conditions. On my last visit the guy behind the counter was coughing like mad man. I asked if he was sick — he complained he had cold and a bad sour throat. 2 minutes later: a girl who was working there after touching everything greasy, grimy, and dirty in the kitchen picked up a fried potato item(cutlet) using her bare hands and passed it to the sick guy to heat it up in the microwave. He gladly took it from her and popped it into the microwave !!! In a state of shock — I asked him what he was doing and that they cant be doing that. He removed it from the microwave and put it back in the pile of cutlets. They both put on previously worn gloves — put a new cutlet in the microwave. I could not believe my eyes, their courage, and utmost disrespect for hygiene. PLEASEAVOIDTHISPLACE. For cheaper food go to Chennai Foods in front of Apna Bazaar, for the same price and slightly better food/conditions go to Dosa House, and for $ 0.50 extra per item — go to Chutneys for much better food and quality.

I ordered food online from this place through seamless and while it was stated that the food would be delivered in 30 – 45 min, it actually took 1 hour 30 min and the customer service gave very rude replies when I called for delivery status. After all this if the food tasted great, I would have still been fine but the food tasted average. Sambhar tasted really bad. The worst part was that a 20% tip(outside of delivery charges) was charged by default. Don’t ever order food from this place. Neither taste not the experience is worth paying for.

I wanted to give them a zero star rating. The most horrible online ordering experience. I tipped the driver almost 25% of the bill and apart from that they had a delivery fee. I got my order after two hours of placing it. The food was all soggy and cold. I can never suggest this restaurant to anyone.

This surely is among the better south ibdian joints in Journal square. Food — Sambhar is delicious and is continuously replenished. Rava dosa — Is crispy and yet folds well to dip and eat aling with the sambhar. Idli — is good. Chutney — The coconut chutney better than most places in JSQ. can be better. Poori thali — I suggest its a to go as its quite filling. The sabji is quite oily. Service — Order at the counter and wait for your number to be called out. Ambience — Surely needs work done to improve hygiene. Cost — ~$ 13 per pax

My remarks might work better in a place where the limit is 140 characters, since I can’t provide much technical detail, but I’ll simply note that the thalis are amazing. A few years they selected everything, while on my past two visits there were some choices for the curries. The soya chunks are interesting for their meat impersonation tactics(Dosa Hut is vegetarian.)
